Uber admits it charged riders more than what drivers saw.

Since Uber began Upfront Pricing, many drivers have suspected riders were being charged a different fare than the driver saw. Well, according to the San Francisco Examiner and Bloomberg, it turns out it was true. On certain fares, riders were charged a higher fare than what driver pay was calculated on.

In a statement to the San Francisco Examiner, an Uber spokesperson wrote, “We price routes differently based on our understanding of riders’ choices so we can serve more people in more places at fares they can afford.”

Basically, for routes going from one high demand or affluent area to another, Uber will often charge the rider more than what the driver sees as the fare. The driver is, and will continue to be paid based on mileage and time. Uber also said it charged more on certain routes to subsidize UberPool rides.

That’s significant, Christian Perea, a San Francisco-based Uber driver said, because riders may be charged a higher amount upfront — say, $25 to go downtown — but drivers will only earn a percentage off a smaller charge, like $20, when a trip is complete.

It’s a strange system that’s certain to anger a number of drivers. What remains to be seen is whether drivers will start talking the longest mileage routes, even if that route isn’t the most efficient.

Look like Uber may fire Anthony Levandowski

Well, it looks like Uber may fire the engineer accused of stealing 14,000 documents from Waymo, Google’s self-driving car division. He was recently ordered by the court in the case to return the documents.

Source: LinkedIn

According to a court filing, Uber told Levandowski that he must comply with an order to return Waymo documents or face possible termination.

Uber general counsel, Salle Yoo, wrote in a letter to Levandowski: “If you do not agree to comply with all of the requirements set forth herein, or if you fail to comply in a material manner, then Uber will take adverse employment action against you, which may include termination of your employment.”

The problem of course is that if he does return the documents, he’s likely going to jail.

Did Uber fire an engineer for reporting sexual harassment?

According to a complaint filed in September with the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing, the answer is yes. A former worker claims he was fired for sticking up for other employees who were experiencing sexual harassment at the hands of a male supervisor.

The former employee stated that he raised the issue with Uber’s HR department several times, but the department didn’t investigate the allegations. Instead, he said he was told: “We get a lot of phone calls from employees that we don’t always act on.”

The employee claims he was subject to a retaliatory investigation and fired in March, 2016. The California agency reviewed and gave the employee permission to file a private suit.

Uber CEO was rebuffed by Tesla CEO Elon Musk

Last year, after Apple invested $1 billion in Didi, Uber CEO Travis Kalanick approached Elon Musk about teaming up in the self-driving car sphere. Elon Musk said no and advised Mr. Kalanick that Uber should stick to its strengths. It’s looking like Mr. Musk may have been right.

The book is called Wild Ride: Inside Uber’s Quest for World Domination.
