Side Hustle Survey - Gig Economy

Engaging With The Gig Economy – Gig Worker & Side Hustle Survey Results

Side hustles and the gig economy are booming.

Services like Lyft and Doordash have gained more popularity in recent years than anyone could have predicted, as immediate access has become the rule rather than the exception. Amidst changing customer expectations and a renaissance of mobile technologies, the need for on-demand services is disrupting industries across the board. It’s also created a wealth of new job opportunities.

There are currently more than 200 apps and services through which a person can find a freelance gig or side hustle.

In today’s job landscape, we’re seeing a growing number of men and women who do freelance work either on the side or as their primary source of income. While driving Lyft or Uber is a big part of that, it’s not the whole picture.  And we felt it was high time to learn a bit more about the state of the gig economy overall.

That’s why we recently carried out a survey to explore the relationship our audience has with the gig economy – why they do it, what services they provide, and so on.

Read on for a detailed breakdown of our results and what they mean.

Gig Jobs And Side Hustles Are Replacing Full-Time Work

Gigs or side hustles are the primary source of income for 58.9% of respondents.

But, 56.2% of respondents treat their gig as a full-time job rather than a side hustle.

The majority of our respondents worked for either Lyft (60%) or Uber (67.7%). We found this unsurprising, given the high demand for rideshare workers vs. other gig economy jobs.

Other side hustles and gigs represented in the survey included DoorDash (23.1%), Postmates (10.8%), Care.com (3.1%), Etsy (4.6%), and Instacart (7.7%).

People Have Embraced Their Side Hustles With Passion

The majority of respondents typically choose gigs involving driving, at 74%. Again, that likely says more about the overall demand for rideshare drivers, than freelancing as a whole. Other gigs included moving, shopping, delivery, petcare, childcare, and crafts.

More interesting is the fact that more than 75% of respondents did gig work three days a week, with only 34.7% putting in 6-7 days.

54.8% of respondents perform more than ten gigs a week, and 75% of respondents only decline 1-3 gigs.

There are many factors that might result in someone declining a gig, but chief among them are pay and travel time. 32.4% of gig workers tend to decline tasks for which they feel the pay is too low, while 31.1% decline them if they have to travel too far. The magic number here seems to be 30 minutes, as 61.1% of respondents indicated that they don’t typically have to travel more than that for a gig.

Freedom And Flexibility Top The List Of Reasons To Love The Gig Economy

As for why people have such love for the gig economy? It really all comes down to time. The appeal of a side hustle is pretty clear for anyone to see – it allows you to make your own schedule, guaranteeing you can work how, where, and when you want.

Being your own boss and setting your own hours also means every day is a little different. You’ll rarely work the same job twice, and particularly if you’re a ridesharing driver, you’ve the opportunity to meet and interact with a wealth of people. That sort of atmosphere might not be for everyone, but amidst those who’ve embraced their side hustle, it seems to be just what they need to thrive.

Of course, a gig is just like any other job, at the end of the day. It has highs and lows. Ups and downs. Some days, even gig workers have trouble getting themselves out of bed.

Rude customers and clients are by far the most common complaint.

That’s not a big surprise, in hindsight. No one likes being disrespected, after all. It’s fortunate, then, that most gigs provide both customers and drivers with a means of reporting rudeness and disrespect.

Rude clients are not the only issue, either.

Many of our respondents lamented the low pay, indicating the difficulty of finding that “sweet spot” that would allow them to maximize their income.

The lack of an hourly wage coupled with time-consuming trips and jobs were other common complaints, as was the relative lack of stability – like it or not, having a gig as your only source of income can be stressful, as your pay’s not always guaranteed.

Perhaps one of the most interesting complaints was about gig workers themselves. Many people who discuss the gig economy online hate customers and want to be paid for doing the bare minimum, according to one respondent. In hindsight, that’s not entirely surprising either.

The ability to be one’s own boss is incredible and attracts tons of driven, energetic, passionate men and women.

Unfortunately, it also attracts plenty of people who are really just stoked they don’t have someone looking over their shoulder to ensure they work hard. The good news is that, in our experience, the latter camp doesn’t tend to last that long.

Key Survey Takeaways

  • Gigs & Side Hustles are the main sources of income for over 40% of responders.
  • Cars are key: Driving and Delivery make up an overwhelming majority of services rendered.
  • Half-hour rule: Over 60% of responders do not travel more than 30 minutes for a gig/service job.
  • More than part-time: Only 25% of responders work side-gigs 1-2 days a week, with almost 35% performing side-hustles 6-7 days a week.

Side Hustle On

Some interesting results, right? It seems many gigs aren’t always side-hustles anymore. More and more people are diving into the gig economy full-time, and for the most part, they’re enjoying it.

Our final conclusion is this: whether you’re looking for a side-hustle or a full-time deal, there’s never been a better time to get involved in the gig economy. As this survey shows, you’ll be joining a group of passionate, dedicated men and women for whom freedom, flexibility, and excellence go hand-in-hand.

Wonolo vs. Shiftgig

Wonolo vs. Shiftgig: Hiring Workers for Your Business

The gig economy is booming, and for many companies this means options. So. Many. Options. Wading through all of your choices isn’t always sunshine and roses. Knowing which direction to go can be daunting, if not confusing. It is for this precise reason that we have compared two of the strongest competitors in the temp work space: Wonolo and Shiftgig.

Location, Location, Location

Let’s start with the most obvious. Where is your company located? Shiftgig has some glaring omissions in the market, namely Los Angeles and San Francisco, so if your company is located in either of those hubs, Wonolo is definitely your best option. Check out the full lists of locations below.

Wonolo currently operates the following areas:

  • Atlanta
  • Chicago
  • Columbus, Ohio, and its suburbs
  • Dallas/Fort Worth
  • Los Angeles
  • Nashville
  • New York City (Manhattan, The Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn, Staten Island, and New Jersey)
  • Philadelphia and its suburbs
  • San Antonio
  • San Francisco Bay area
  • Seattle
  • Tampa

Shiftgig currently operates in

  • Atlanta
  • Chicago
  • Dallas
  • Houston
  • Memphis
  • Miami
  • Milwaukee
  • Nashville
  • New Orleans
  • New York City
  • Philadelphia
  • Phoenix
  • Tampa

It’s a Numbers Game… or Is It?

Wonolo claims to have around 300,000 users registered on the platform. In comparison, Shiftgig has 15,000 registered workers (and 1,500 companies and employers) as of its last funding round.

You can look at this data two different ways. The first is to assume that Wonolo has more employees and will always have more options for you. The second is to assume that Shiftgig has less registered users because it is more stringent in its hiring and onboarding process.

It’s important to consider that Wonolo’s number of users could be higher due to its market share in Los Angeles. The city is a massive hub for gig workers looking to pick up extra shifts when they aren’t busy with creative work.

Both companies have posted quick intro videos that explain how they work. Here’s the Shiftgig explainer.

And here’s the intro video from Wonolo.

Shiftgig Vs. Wonolo: Different Features

Pay Schedules

Shiftgig sticks to a traditional weekly pay schedule. It also offers DailyPay on specific jobs to employees in New York and Chicago.

On the other hand, Wonolo pays all its employees on a daily basis. As an employer, you are expected to pay the day after the gig is finished and provide a rating for the employee’s performance. (We’ll cover more on this later.)

The Hiring Process

Wonolo conducts all screening tests and interviews on the phone, which could be a major reason why it has so many registered users. The company’s site boasts: “At Wonolo, we conduct all screening and vetting via phone, meaning you don’t need to take time out to travel to an in-person interview. That means you’ll be up and running – and ready to start accepting jobs – faster.”

Call Shiftgig old-fashioned, but it still prefers to hold in-person interviews after receiving applicants’ information.

Pay Rates

For the most part, Wonoloers (yes that is the company’s nickname for its workers) appear to make higher hourly wages than Shiftgig employees (nicknamed Specialists).

This is due to Wonolo adding its service fee to the company’s invoice rather than deducting it from the worker’s pay. Good for employees. Not so good for employers, unless you take into consideration that happier employees almost always perform better.

In the San Francisco Bay area, Wonolo workers earned:

  • between $10 and $16 an hour for warehouse and order fulfillment gigs
  • between $15 and $35 an hour for delivery jobs
  • between $15 and $25 an hour for clerical and data entry jobs
  • between $15 and $25 for general labor and moving jobs
  • between $13 and $30 an hour for brand ambassador and event work

Shiftgig workers report a whopping difference in their average hourly wages, including:

  • $11.61 per hour for a server
  • $11.33 per hour for a cook
  • $11.75 per hour for a server/bartender
  • $13 per hour for an event specialist
  • between $9 and 10 an hour for a warehouse worker

Wonolo Vs. Shiftgig – Career Trajectory

It appears Wonolo isn’t opposed to its workforce accepting full-time jobs with companies they are introduced to via the app, and may even encourage it.

Shiftgig, on the other hand, has a section on its user agreement that reads:

Other than connecting with users for the purpose of receiving or providing a position in the service industry, individuals and companies are prohibited from using the Site and Services for the purpose of recruiting for another website or soliciting, advertising to, or contracting users for employment, contracting, or any other purpose for a business not affiliated with Shiftgig without the express written consent of Shiftgig.

This is in direct contrast to a Fast Company article published in 2017 that stated “Shiftgig does not keep numbers on how many of its employees get full-time work at the places where they pick up shifts, though it does happen often enough that Eddie Lou (Executive Chairman and co-founder of Shiftgig) sees it as another avenue for the company to grow.

‘We allow businesses to test someone before they hire someone full-time,’ he points out.

In the future, Shiftgig hopes to create a mobile app for workers looking to find full-time work and change careers as well as providing career coaching, though don’t expect the company to hire human resources staff to facilitate the service. As Lou noted, “In a staffing agency it is someone’s brain; at Shiftgig, it is technology”.

The moral of the story here is that in any tech-driven economy, the landscape, and the rules can change at a moment’s notice. Stay up to date with press releases and articles about all companies while considering your staffing needs.

Technology

Let’s address the concerns with Wonolo’s higher registered user numbers and the potential for a watered-down pool of workers.

The company claims to use AI technology, which creates data-driven staffing with the help of ratings from both employees and employers after every single job. This helps Wonolo identify top performers and provide them with more opportunities (potentially becoming a Preferred Wonoloer). It also phases out poor performers and undesirable companies. While there are a massive number of registered users, the company only gives regular work to a small amount of those that are registered.

Shiftgig tends to showcase all available jobs to workers via GPS and keyword filters.

This is nice because while AI is impressive, it can sometimes miss things. A job that perfectly fits a potential employee’s work experience may somehow be missed in the application period.

Automating systems is great, but nothing beats human connection, especially for gig economy jobs that require strong customer service and marketing skills.

Over and Out

While these two companies are relatively new, they offer different solutions to the same problem faced by many employers. Trying out both services may be what makes the most sense for you. Or maybe you’ve already made up your mind based on the company practices listed here.

Bottom line: if you’re looking for a more personal, hands-on approach, we recommend Shiftgig. If you’re impressed by evolving technology, go with Wonolo.

Step 1: Sign Up

Signing up for UrbanSitter is as easy as 1-2-3! First, go to urbansitter.com and click “Become a Sitter,” or download the UrbanSitter app on your android or ios device.

Next, enter your date of birth (you must be at least 16 years old) and click to sign up with Facebook, Google, or enter your email in the box provided. Make sure you sign up with an email that you use frequently, as the site will send notes about upcoming jobs and reminders when you have a message from a family in your UrbanSitter inbox.

Urbansitter sign up screen

Create a password with at least eight characters and one number or symbol followed by your name and phone number. Find jobs near you by adding your street address and ZIP code. You may add your neighborhood if you choose. This allows for families to find you easily in their searches.

Step 2: Approval Checklist

After the initial sign up, you will find some featured jobs available to you. Below is the button “See All in the Job Board” that you may choose to check out now or later. Keep in mind that families are always looking for trustworthy sitters, and the more time you dedicate to your profile, the better chances you will have when booking your next gig!

Urbansitter babysitter dashboard

Above the featured families you will find the Approval Checklist of items to complete before moving forward. Some are required, like setting your rates. Others, like adding direct deposit, are strongly recommended.

Step 3: Personalize!

To jumpstart your UrbanSitter empire, click the “tell families more about you” tab on the Approval Checklist to add a professional photograph and what you’re looking for (i.e., “I’m looking for part-time work with a great family in my area!”). Photo Tip: Be sure to choose a photo from the waist up, preferably of you smiling!

Urbansitter photo tips

There is even a feature to add a short introductory video alongside your photograph with tips and examples of successful intro videos. Share a 30-second blurb about your experience with kids, or the kinds of activities you’d like to bring to the family.

You can add full details to your profile about the kind of work you are looking for on the site including if you are searching for occasional jobs, or if you’d like consistent hours each week.

You may also select part- or full-time jobs and include details in the comment box below about your current scheduling needs (e.g. “I am available weeknights except for Mondays, and I am open on Saturday and Sunday mornings”).

As you review your profile, be sure to spend extra time on items like “Babysitting Experience,” where you can tell families what age children you’ve worked with in the past and for how long.

It is OK if you don’t have experience with certain age groups, but be honest on any age groups you are not willing to work with, especially infants under 1-year-old. Under the “Special Experience” box, you may also check off any special medical conditions of children you’ve worked with before, like ADD, epilepsy, and food allergies.

Step 4: Set Your Rate

As you work down your profile, pay special attention to the rates section. There are options for sitting up to four children at once, so take into consideration how many children you are comfortable watching at the same time. Depending on the state where you live, standard rates may be higher or lower.

For example, a nanny in New York City, where the cost of living is higher, may expect a base pay of $15 or more for a single child, with increases of $2-4 per additional child. Check out The International Nanny Association for more information about setting the right rate for you.

Step 5: Add Specialties and Certifications

When it comes to childcare, families are often looking for multifaceted individuals who are open to a variety of work inside their home. In the “Willing to help with…” box, you will find items such as pet care, laundry, cooking, and caring for sick children.

Be honest with yourself and only select items you are willing to do. It is OK if you don’t feel comfortable doing some of these tasks; just be sure to be open about your position if the family asks.

If you have any certifications, like a teaching license, RN license, or CPR/First Aid training, you can add this to your profile to draw families in. Keep in mind that CPR certifications expire every couple of years. But don’t worry, the Red Cross offers courses and recertification online. Click here for more information.

This is also where you can add transportation preferences and if you are willing to drive a car for pick-ups or drop-offs. Having a car is not required, but be sure to mention if you have a valid driver’s license. In the “Special Availability” box you will find boxes to check off for special events like weddings, travel, and overnight jobs.

Step 6: Get 5-Star Reviews

You’ll also notice a “Reviews” tab in your profile. You can click here to find a link to send to friends, family, and past employers, so they can vouch for your professionalism and background in childcare.

Another tab to note is the “Friends” tab, where you can find any friends from your social media network who are registered on UrbanSitter. It’s not a bad idea to grab a coffee with these friends to get the scoop on their experience so far. Friends who nanny together stay together!

Step 7: Check Out the Job Board

When you’re ready, you can check out the Job Board to see families in your area who are hiring. Employers are listed according to the distance you submitted when you signed up with your address, but you can also adjust the filter at the top with the number of miles away from your current location. You can choose “Express Interest” or “Hide Job” once you view a job. In the job headline, most will tell you the desired start date and the time of day a nanny is needed.

Urbansitter Job Board

Step 8: Get Booked!

The beauty of UrbanSitter is that booking is done entirely through the app, with active updates and communication with families done directly on your profile. You can choose to reach out to families by expressing interest in their job posts or wait for them to discover you.

Whichever route you choose, be sure to respond to family messages in the app as soon as possible. Response time to job inquiries helps boost your profile and can help families who are searching for nannies for last minute needs. Once you complete a job, don’t be afraid to ask your family for a review as these will help you book more jobs.

Step 9: Stay Up to Date

As you move through your UrbanSitter experience, update your availability calendar to ensure families have the most up-to-date information on your work schedule. While you are picking up jobs, feel free to check out the “Success Guide” in the main toolbar or join the Facebook group to get insight from UrbanSitter nannies and babysitters just like you!

Step 10: Have Fun!

No matter where you end up at UrbanSitter, be sure to have fun! Childcare can be a very rewarding experience with its shares of struggles, but with a solid profile and professionalism, you will attract great employers who will not only think of you as a caregiver, but as part of the family.

Last updated: [last-modified]

Becoming a Postmates driver (or courier, since you don’t have to deliver for Postmates with a car) can be a great way to make some extra cash. And unlike driving rideshare, you don’t have to deal with passengers, and you can take a friend along if you wish.

Even better, in many of the over 550 Postmates cities, you can deliver using a car, motorcycle, scooter, bike, or even on foot.

Delivery services like Postmates have expanded rapidly over the past couple of years. Postmates is currently available in over 60% of the U.S., and partners with restaurants like Chipotle, Subway, Pink Dot, and many more.

But how do you get a job at Postmates? What’s it like to drive for Postmates? And how much do drivers or couriers earn?

Read on for answers to these questions and more in our complete guide on how to drive for Postmates.

What is Postmates?

Postmates allows users to get their favorite food, drinks, and snacks delivered right to their doorsteps. From restaurants to juice bars to food trucks, Postmates makes it easier for you to satisfy your cravings.

Postmates joins the pool of food delivery services like Doordash and Caviar, out there working to deliver your favorite foods to your door. But where Postmates is a step ahead of the competition is their excellent service.

The service is currently available in over 20 different states throughout the country. Depending on where you drive, there is a great opportunity to make some money. From New York to San Diego to Chicago, you can deliver for Postmates in many locations across the country.

What Do Postmates Drivers Do?

Working for postmates means you are the one responsible for filling orders. Because you will be the ones on the front lines, it’s very important for you to provide great customer service.

But what’s the actual Postmates job like?

There are a variety of ways for you to work. Whether you choose to drive a car, a motorcycle or ride a bike is up to you. A lot of this decision also depends on where you live.

Keep in mind that Postmates is not in any way responsible for the maintenance costs of your vehicle. Because of this, having a vehicle that is reliable and that is kept maintained regularly is essential.

As was mentioned before, couriers create their own schedule. This flexibility allows you to choose however much or little you’d like to work.

Using The Postmates Fleet App

After downloading the app and setting up a courier account, you’re able to keep an eye out for orders to start coming in on the Postmates Fleet app. Postmates Fleet is a separate app from the regular customer Postmates app.

From there, you can start accepting orders.

The job is straightforward, and schedules are very flexible. Whether you’re looking for a part-time gig or something you can do full-time, driving for Postmates is a great opportunity for anyone in need of a little bit of extra cash.

Become A Postmates Courier

Here’s a great little video that shows exactly what using the Postmates Fleet app and delivering for Postmates is really like.

What Is Postmates Driver Pay Like?

It really depends on your market and which hours you work. One survey says Postmates drivers make $19.11 per hour.

Postmates itself says drivers can make up to $27 per hour, although that’s probably too optimistic for many markets. While you may be able to make that (or more) in certain cities, the national average is lower.

Simply put, driver pay can vary a lot from market to market.

In most small to medium size markets, Postmates couriers make around $10 – $15 per hour before expenses.

If you sign up to drive for Postmates in a larger market like Chicago, Los Angeles, or New York City, you can expect to earn more, especially during busy hours.

There are also cities where delivery services are incredibly popular, which of course pushes demand for couriers higher.

Delivery services like Postmates are are heavily in demand in Brooklyn, Ft. Lauderdale, Las Vegas, Miami, and Phoenix.

But no matter your city, delivering for Postmates can be a very lucrative opportunity for anyone, during certain hours. And the ability to work as much or as little as you want can be a great chance to make some money.

Working for Postmates allows you to create your own schedule.

Instead of reporting to a single location to work every day, Postmates couriers work whenever they have time. This is perfect for those who are looking for a side hustle or for anyone that is currently in between jobs.

Drivers are simply expected to provide great service and complete orders quickly. It’s very important that you’re able to keep your orders organized and that you stay focused.

Postmates offers a unique opportunity for people to work on their own time. But how does this actually work?

Postmates Tipping

One of the most important aspects of the job is getting tips.

If you work for Postmates, you keep 100% of the tips you make on deliveries. And on Postmates, the amount a customer tips does not decrease the amount a courier earns.

Tips can make a big difference in how much money you end up making per order. While it can be great when people do give you tips, you are likely to run into some cheap customers. Without tips, the job ends up paying a little bit less. However, most Postmates customers tip. So, if you’re using Postmates as a customer and not tipping, you’re doing it wrong.

In addition to relying on tips, there are also different fees that you need to consider about the job. Between vehicle maintenance and fees deducted from each order, it’s vital that you’re organized and focused when taking orders.

After a while, you will slowly develop your own strategies for maximizing your income.

While working for Postmates can be a wonderful opportunity, not everyone can get a job with Postmates. It’s important to take some time to find out whether you’re qualified before you go through the application process.

What Are the Postmates Courier Requirements?

Working for Postmates can be great for a variety of different people. But what does it take to join the team?

Before you get started with working through the application process, there somethings that you can do to make sure you qualify.

Not only will you have to apply normally, but there are a few requirements for the job. While it may seem like common sense, it doesn’t hurt to know.

These requirements to drive for Postmates include:

  • Being 18 or older
  • Having a valid driver’s license as well as a vehicle that is insured (if you’ll be driving)
  • Passing a criminal background check

If you meet these requirements, it’s time to move onto the actual application process.

Apply For Postmates – What’s The Application Process Like?

Joining the Postmates Fleet starts with opening a driver account and starting your application.

The account creation process will ask for basic information like your name, date of birth, and phone number. You will also be asked to select which market you’re located in, the type vehicle you’ll be using, and to enter a referral code if you have one.

You will also be asked to enter a home address so you can be sent a pre-paid Postmates credit card. This card is for you to use when picking up orders. This especially comes in handy when customers haven’t paid for their orders.

The next step to joining the Postmates fleet is looking through the Fleet Agreement. This is essentially a terms and conditions document that goes provides an in-depth look at the job itself.

After reviewing this information, the next step is to authorize a background check. It’s important for customers to feel safe and comfortable using Postmates. This check will search various Federal and State databases for a personal criminal history.

From there, you simply need to complete the registration process. This includes uploading a nice profile picture and setting up a location and method for receiving payment.

After creating your Postmates Fleet account and receiving your Postmates welcome kit, you’ll be ready to go online and start delivering orders. Now that you’re a part of the Postmates Fleet, it’s up to you to uphold the company’s standards.

But what can you do to ensure you’re doing your job well?

What Makes a Great Postmates Courier?

The best Postmates couriers provide the best service they can. This is an important part of the job, especially for new couriers.

Not only do couriers act as the face of the company, but customers also expect their orders to arrive on-time. The job can sometimes be a very high-pressure, but it’s important to step back and try to enjoy yourself.

The key to success as a driver for Postmates is being prepared, completing orders quickly, and getting tips.

Becoming a great Postmates driver means working hard to always get orders done and engaging with customers. Check out these helpful tips to get you started as a driver. Not only will these tips help you better understand what it means to be a part of the Postmates Fleet, but they will also help you make the most of your time, so you can drive profitably.

Know Your City

One of the most important steps to becoming a great driver is knowing your way around town. Getting familiar with the ins and outs of your city can help minimize your navigation time.

While you probably won’t be able to master every street in your city, you can take a minute to familiarize yourself with how neighborhoods and areas are laid out. Locations like New York City have very specific ways in which areas are sectioned from one another. Understanding these divisions can help you navigate quickly.

However, there is a very good chance you’ll still have to rely on a GPS of some kind for most of your orders. In this case, it’s best to have a mount of some kind for your phone to navigate hands-free. While getting orders completed on time is a big part of your job, safety is the number one priority.

It also helps to know where the more expensive restaurants are. These places usually have more expensive items on their menu, which means more money for you.

At the end of the day, the best way to get familiar with your surroundings is to go out and explore. Whether it’s while you’re working or just for fun, it never hurts to see what’s around you.

Customer Service

Customer service is an important part of driving for Postmates. Not only does it reflect well on the company as a whole, but it can also say a lot about you.

Good customer service is more than just doing what is expected. Going that extra mile can result in more tips and repeated orders from the customer.

In addition to double checking your orders to make sure you get everything, there are other little things that you can do to take your job to the next level.

For starters, grabbing extra napkins, utensils, and additional sauces can make a difference. While some may not even notice this, there will be some that appreciate the gesture, and tip accordingly.

Delivering the order in person is another way to make the customer’s experience more personal. While there will be situations where you’ll have to leave the order at a leasing office or have them meet you halfway, it’s always nice to try to bring the order right to their doorstep.

When the customer receives their order, make sure you give them a receipt. Each receipt will have your name printed on it, making it easy for them to call in case there was something wrong with the order.

Providing customers with this kind of service not only increases your chances of getting tipped well, but it encourages them to order again.

Time and Location

Where you’re located can play a major role in what kind of Postmates orders you receive. If you’re located in major Postmates cities like New York, Los Angeles, or Chicago, you’re more likely to have better luck with getting more orders.

But that’s not to say there isn’t anything in smaller cities. As Postmates continues to grow, more people will begin using it.

An important part of this growth revolves around great customer service. When one customer has a great experience, they are likely to recommend it to a friend.

While you might not be able to do much about where you live, you can do something about when you work. Because Postmates lets you make your own schedule, you can choose to work when you know it’ll be busy.

This might take some trial and error to figure out, but it can also be the most beneficial for you. In most Postmates markets, the busy times are during the lunch and dinner hours. A good number of drivers for Lyft or Uber often drive delivery for Postmates during lunch or other times when Uber or Lyft aren’t as busy.

However, when it gets busy really differs from market to market. Some Postmates markets are busy during normal mealtimes, while others actually get busy in the mornings or late at night. It ultimately depends on where you live and how customers around you behave.

Managing Orders

A big part of doing well at Postmates is how you choose to manage your time. Deciding which orders to accept and how many you take on at one time can make a huge difference.

Some choose to accept multiple orders at once. This way, you can pick up all the items at once and deliver them one after another. While it is a great way to complete a lot of orders quickly, you will have to deliver them in the order they were received. It’s an annoying quirk of the Postmates system.

Another strategy is to enable the “auto-accept” function on the app. This will automatically add deliveries to your route.

At the end of the day, maximizing your profits depends on how you choose to manage your orders. However, the more orders you take, the more your take is likely to be.

Should You Become a Postmates Driver?

Services like Postmates are allowing more people to make their own work schedules. The freedom and flexibility that comes with driving for Postmates can be tricky to manage at first. But over time, you will get the hang of how to use your time wisely.

But how do you know if you should drive for Postmates? This depends on your personal situation. If this flexibility is something you need in a job, then it may be the perfect fit.

Alto Rides Into Dallas, Uber Takes Flight, And Amazon’s Last Mile

This Week In On Demand — Jan. 26, 2019

The rideshare and bike-share industries stole the headlines this week in on demand with new announcements, launches, and team expansions. So, sit back, relax, and get up-to-date on the latest gig economy happenings with this week’s news rundown.

Alto Looks to Shake Up the Rideshare Industry

The on demand rideshare industry has long been dominated by Uber and Lyft. Now, a new Dallas-based startup is entering the sphere. Alto rounded out its two-part Series A round with investments totaling $14.5 million. The funding was led by Road Ventures with frogVentures contributing.

Alto went live over the holidays. Using a subscription-based business model, only members that join the platform are allowed to request rides. While the service is currently limited to the Dallas Metro area, the company plans to open their Series B funding round in the spring to assist with their expansion goals.

Competing with established brands, like Uber and Lyft, has proven a tough job for many companies. However, Alto hopes to stand out from its competitors with its focus on safety for both drivers and passengers. The company’s drivers are employees instead of contractors, and each undergoes in-depth vetting and training. Also owns and maintains the vehicles, which are newer SUV’s. Additionally, passengers are able to control their ride experience directly through the app by negating cabin temperature and choosing music.

Uber Rolls Out Loyalty Program & Partners With Boeing for Air Taxi Service

This week, rideshare customers in certain cities began reaping the benefits of their Uber-brand loyalty. The Uber Rewards program officially launched in 25 markets on Tuesday, providing discounts and perks for frequent riders.

Uber first announced the program back in November, merely days after Lyft introduced the concept for theirs. However, Lyft Rewards still hasn’t made an appearance, and the company hasn’t yet released any information regarding the program’s launch date.

Soon, Uber Rewards may become available to frequent flyers as well. The rideshare company is partnering with Boeing and Bell to create an on demand flying taxi service known as Uber Air. On Wednesday, news broke that the program’s prototype aircraft made its first successful flight. The test took place in Virginia, and according to Boeing’s chief technology officer, the monumental moment came after a year’s worth of design and engineering work.

DoorDash Announces New Vice President of Engineering

After celebrating a market expansion into all 50 states last week, DoorDash is focused on team expansions this week. On Wednesday, the food delivery company announced the addition of Ryan Sokol as vice president of engineering. Previously, Sokol was heavily involved in the launch and growth of Uber Eats.

Sokol isn’t the only Uber employee to jump ship for DoorDash. In July of last year, the company hired Prabir Adarkar as chief financial officer. Prior to his hire, Adarkar worked as the head of finance for Uber.

Wag Founders Turn Their Attention to Bike-Sharing While Mobike Undergoes Name Change

New e-bike startup, Wheels, announced a $37 million funding round this week headed by Tenaya Capital. The company was founded by Jonathan and Joshua Viner, who also founded the dog-walking company Wag. After leaving Wag, the two brothers started Wheels last year using their own capital.

Wheels hopes to enter markets in Southern California soon, followed by a wider expansion across the U.S. While the current bike-sharing market is fairly saturated, the company hopes to enter as a strong competitor thanks to its interchangeable design and sustainability focus.

While Wheels looks to take on the U.S. market, a top player in the Chinese market will soon sport a new name. Mobike is being rebranded as Meituan Bike. The change following the company’s acquisition by Meituan-Dianping last year. The official name change is expected to take place sometime this year.

Amazon Launches Robot-Delivery Pilot

On Wednesday, Amazon announced its new robotic pilot for last-mile deliveries. The program relies on a small robot dubbed Scout, which was developed by the company’s in-house robotics team. The system features a small container used to hold packages and is powered by a rechargeable electric battery and six wheels. Currently, six Scouts are making deliveries in Snohomish County, WA.

Amazon Scout Robot Delivery

How the move will affect the role of Amazon Flex drivers is unknown. While the company hasn’t commented on the future of last-mile drivers, robotic assistance may eliminate the need for freelance delivery contractors altogether. It also raises questions regarding the need for traditional delivery paths, like UPS and FedEx.

That’s a wrap on this weeks on demand news. Check back next Friday to catch up on the biggest headlines of the week.

When it comes to qualifying as a driver, if you’re over 21, have a relatively clean driving record, and can pass a background check, you’ll likely qualify to Drive with Lyft.

Lyft Car Requirements For Every U.S. Market

When it comes to your vehicle, in most places, if your car is less than 15 years old, it should meet the Lyft vehicle requirements for your state or market. This is quite a change from a few years ago. It used to be that you needed a car that was less than 8 years old to drive with Lyft in most places. In some cities, the Lyft vehicle requirements specified a vehicle that was a maximum of 5 years old!

Lyft loosened their vehicle requirements in 2016 to allow older vehicles onto the system. Since the average age of a car in the United States is 11.8 years, this opened up the Lyft platform to a lot more available vehicles and helped spur their incredible 2017 growth spurt.

Lyft currently offers five different vehicle types to riders: Lyft (regular sedans), Lyft XL (7 seats+), Lyft Lux (fancier), Lyft Lux Black (fanciest), and Lyft Lux Black XL (fanciest suvs).

To qualify for Lyft or Lyft XL in most places, you’ll need a 2004 or newer vehicle. The other vehicle types are part of Lyft’s premium services. The Lyft vehicle requirements for premium vehicles are more stringent, and now require at least a 2011 or newer vehicle. In many states, regardless of your vehicle’s age, you’ll need to pass a vehicle inspection to make sure the car is in good condition.

The Lyft vehicle requirements for all services were last updated by Lyft at the end of June, 2018. Lyft only updates vehicle requirements once a year. So, if your vehicle is a 2004 model, in most Lyft markets, you’ll be able to drive that car for at least a year on the Lyft system. In June, 2019, though, the Lyft markets that require a 2004 vehicle will likely switch to require a 2004 vehicle instead.

Further down this page, we cover the specific Lyft car requirements for Lyft XL, Lyft Lux, Lyft Lux Black, and Lyft Lux Black XL. Then, we briefly go over the Lyft vehicle condition, Lyft inspection (including where to get your Lyft vehicle inspection), and Lyft driver requirements.

Drive With Lyft

The Different Lyft Vehicle Types

Lyft has five different vehicle services. Recently, Lyft released a new rider app in which they renamed some of their service offerings. For example, Lyft Plus (vehicles that can seat seven people total) is now called Lyft XL.

lyft car requirements - lyft lux

Lyft Vehicle Age Requirements

Lyft has recently changed the vehicle age requirements for all of their Premium service lines (Lyft Lux, Lyft Lux Black, and Lyft Lux Black XL). Always pay close attention to Lyft’s vehicle age requirements. In many cities, if you have a 2004 model year car, it will currently qualify for Lyft. But it probably won’t next year.

Here’s the current lineup of the different Lyft services and the vehicles that qualify.

Regular Lyft Service Lines

  • Lyft – This is the basic Lyft service, which includes Lyft shared rides. If your vehicle has 5 seat belts, four doors (no jump doors), and meets the Lyft vehicle age requirements for your market, you can use it to drive with Lyft. However, taxis and other commercial vehicles will not qualify.
  • Lyft XL (formerly Lyft Plus) – Lyft XL provides vehicles that can seat 7 passengers or more (including the driver). If your vehicle meets Lyft’s vehicle requirements and has 7 or more seats, you will also be able to accept Lyft XL rides. Large passenger vans that seat 12-20 people will not qualify for Lyft.

Premium Lyft Service Lines

  • Lyft Lux (formerly Lyft Premier) – To qualify for Lyft Lux, you’ll need a relatively new, high-end vehicle (2012 – 2016 or newer). Typical vehicles include BMW, Mercedes, and Lexus. See below for the full Lyft Lux vehicle list.
  • Lyft Lux Black – To qualify for Lyft Lux Black, you’ll need a very new luxury vehicle (2014 or newer 2016 or 2018 in some markets). The car must have a black exterior, and a leather or faux-leather interior. See below for the full Lyft Lux Black vehicle list.
  • Lyft Lux Black XL – If your vehicle qualifes for Lyft Lux Black, and has 7 or more seat belts, you will also be able to accept Lyft Lux Black XL rides. These are some of the most lucrative rides in the Lyft universe.

Lyft XL Vehicle Requirements

If you want to drive Lyft XL and your vehicle qualifies for regular Lyft, the only additional requirement is that your car has seven seat belts total, six for passengers and one for the driver.

Once you’re approved to drive, if your vehicle has seven seat belts, you should automatically be able to accept Lyft XL rides. If you’re not, you’ll definitely want to contact Lyft and let them know your vehicle qualifies for Lyft XL. Lyft XL rates are often 50% – 100% higher than regular Lyft rates.

Lyft Lux Vehicle Requirements (Models and Age)

With the introduction of the new Lyft rider app, Lyft has also changed the age requirements for Lyft Lux (formerly Lyft Premiere) vehicles. As recently as June of 2018, you could qualify for Lyft Lux with a 2009 vehicle. Now, you’ll need at least a 2012 or newer vehicle in most cases. In a few cases, you’ll need a 2016 or newer vehicle to qualify for Lyft Lux.

lyft vehicle requirements - lux black

Lyft Lux is currently available in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, San Francisco, Silicon Valley. It has also begun rolling out in Washington, DC, New Jersey, Dallas, Boston, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Las Vegas, Denver, Phoenix, San Diego, Orange County, Seattle, Baltimore, Detroit, Miami, and Minneapolis.

This list comes directly from Lyft. If your car isn’t on the list, it will not qualify for Lyft Lux.

The reason the vehicle requirements are so strict is that Lyft Lux Black and Lyft Lux Black SUV fares are often 100% – 175% higher than regular Lyft or Lyft XL fares. Most users of Lyft Lux Black are usually high level executives, and people going out for a special occasion or a night on the town.  If a rider is paying that much, they are expecting a great car and a professional experience.

This list comes directly from Lyft. If your car isn’t on the list, it will not qualify for Lyft Lux Black.

Lyft Lux Black XL Vehicle Requirements (Models and Age)

If it qualifies for Lyft Lux Black and has seven seat belts, it qualifies for Lyft Lux Black XL

Lyft Vehicle Condition Requirements

All vehicles on the Lyft platform must have at least 4 doors and 5 seat belts. Cars with jump doors (many 4 door pickups) will not qualify for Lyft. All exterior lights must be working, including turn signals, brake lights, reverse lights, and headlights. Both high beams and low beams must work.

Besides the above requirements, the vehicle has to be in good condition, and good working order. So, all the doors, windows, and major equipment have to work, and the car shouldn’t have any major cosmetic damage.

How does Lyft define major cosmetic damage? Generally, if your car has a few scratches or minor dings, you should be approved. This is espeically true if you live in a state that doesn’t require an inspection. In those states, you will have to send Lyft pictures of your car from all sides. If the damage isn’t noticeable in the photo, it won’t be a problem. However, if you have noticeable damage like a big dent in the door, or part of your bumper is hanging off, you won’t be approved.

If you live in a state that requires an inspection, approval often comes down to the inspector. They usually don’t car about minor dings. But if your windshield had a crack (even a small one), you probably won’t pass.

While not all states require a vehicle inspection to drive with Lyft, it’s important that your car is in pretty good condition anyway. The reason is that vehicle condition can often affect ratings and tips. If your vehicle has squeaky breaks, worn out seats, or suspension issues, riders will notice.

The Lyft Vehicle Inspection

In many states and cities, you’ll need to pass a vehicle inspection to drive with Lyft. See your state information above to see if you’ll need to get an inspection, and to download the Lyft inspection form for your market. You generally must use the Lyft inspection form, not a generic inspection form, or the Uber vehicle inspection form.

The vehicle inspection is a one page form you’ll give to a licensed mechanic in your state. They’ll fill it out, and if you pass, you’ll upload the completed form to your Lyft dashboard. The inspection usually costs about $20 and you can have it done at Jiffy Lube, Pep Boys, or another licensed mechanic. In some markets, you can have the inspection completed at a Lyft hub, sometimes for free.

What gets checked during the Lyft vehicle inspection?

Here’s a list of what the inspector will look at during the inspection.

  • Foot Brakes
  • Emergency Brake (parking brake)
  • Steering Mechanism – Ball Joins, Tie Rods, Rack & Pinion, Bushings
  • Windshield – Large and small cracks
  • Rear Window and Other Glass
  • Windshield Wipers
  • Headlights
  • Tail lights
  • Turn Indicator Lights
  • Stop Lights
  • Front Seat Adjustment
  • Doors (open, close, lock)
  • Horn
  • Speedometer
  • Bumpers
  • Muffler and Exhaust Systems
  • Tires (including tread depth)
  • Interior and Exterior Rear View Mirrors
  • Seat Belts

Lyft Driver Requirements

The basic Lyft driver requirements are as follows.

  1. You have to be 21 years old and have had a driver’s license for at least 1 year. (In some cities, your license may need to be from the state in which you’ll be driving).
  2. You must be able to pass a criminal background check and driving background check.
  3. You must have in state personal auto insurance (you must be listed as a driver on the policy) for the vehicle you will be using.
  4. You must have a relatively clean driving record. (No DUI’s or reckless driving and very few moving violations over the last few years.)

Juno Rideshare

Juno – How It Works For Riders And Drivers

With so many rideshare service opportunities available to you, it can be difficult to decide which is the best way to make some extra cash. Juno is an alternative to Lyft and Uber that markets itself as “a better ridesharing service.” But what is Juno really all about?

Below, we tell you all you need to know about Juno – how it works and how you can get started as a Juno driver.

This will help you make a more informed decision about whether or not this rideshare service might be the right fit as a profitable side gig.

What Is Juno?

Juno launched in New York City in 2016 and set itself apart from other rideshare companies as the “socially responsible way to ride.” Juno started with the idea that treating drivers better will ultimately result in better customer experiences.

Gett, which received $300 million in funding from Volkswagen in 2016, acquired Juno in 2017 for $200 million, but is still aiming to keep Juno a driver-friendly rideshare company.

By charging 60 to 65 percent lower commissions than Uber and Lyft, Juno helps rideshare drivers maximize their income. This not only makes for satisfied drivers, but riders can also feel better knowing more of their money is going to the person providing the service. Juno also offers various promotions and bonuses to its drivers, allowing them to earn even more money over time.

Additionally, the company is selective about who joins its team.

It only accepts former Uber and Lyft drivers with a rating of 4.7 or above.

This policy provides an overall better experience for riders, as customers can feel safe knowing their driver is professional and well-qualified.

Juno Customer & Driver Support

Juno also sets itself apart from other rideshare services in that it offers 24/7 support through phone, email, and text messaging. This 24/7 support service allows both drivers and riders to get the information they need when they need it or resolve any issues by talking to an actual person.

The Juno driver support number is 855-586-6872.

The Juno customer support number is 844-586-6872.

How Juno Works

Juno is currently only available in New York City and select cities in New Jersey. Since its acquisition by Gett, the plan has been to expand into other markets. However, that expansion is in doubt since Volkswagen has just written off its entire $300 million investment in Gett.

The service works very similarly as other major rideshare services like Lyft and Uber for both riders and drivers.

Juno for Drivers

Juno markets itself as a driver-friendly alternative to Uber and Lyft. With 30,000 active drivers in New York City, according to the company’s website, it’s clear that drivers do enjoy making some extra money on the side through Juno.

The application process for becoming a driver on Juno is similar to other rideshare services. However, Juno is much more selective about who can drive for the company. Prospective drivers have to attend an in-person interview to ensure they’re a good fit for the service.

Driver must also have an eligible vehicle. From the Juno site:

To drive for our Bliss service, the minimum year requirement is 2012Lux and SUV categories require the minimum year of 2014 with black exterior and interior. Currently, our standards require full-sized vehicles or larger.

Also, be sure to check out the Juno Eligible Vehicles list.

To get started, visit the Juno site, select “Become a Driver,” and enter the city you want to drive in, your name, email address, password, and phone number.

From here, someone from the company will contact you to set up an interview. In addition to having a high rating on Uber and Lyft, you must also have a TLC license, which is required for all rideshare drivers who drive in New York City.

Once Juno has approved you to drive, you will be able to accept rides using the app. You will receive ride requests, and after you accept, you will drive to the pickup location and take the rider to their designated drop-off location. Juno offers a pickup bonus to compensate drivers who have to drive a significant amount of time to get to the rider’s location.

As the company is relatively new and only operates in a few cities, there is not yet clear data on the average take-home pay for Juno drivers. However, drivers with Juno are subject to lower commission rates than Lyft or Uber.

The Juno app also has a tipping option for riders, allowing drivers to earn even more for each ride. Juno drivers get to keep 100 percent of the tips left by riders, and there is no limit to how much riders can leave.

Juno for Riders

The first step for riders is to download the Juno app for iPhone or Android. Once you’ve downloaded the app, you can create an account using your phone number. After confirming your number, you’ll need to provide an email address and password, enter your first and last name, and add a photo of yourself so drivers can easily find you.

Getting a ride using the app is very similar to the process for Uber or Lyft. You start by selecting the type of vehicle you would like. Juno gives you three options:

  • Bliss. Similar to UberX, this is the regular service, which will provide you with a clean vehicle, but nothing special.
  • Lux. This is similar to UberBLACK or Lyft Lux, providing you with a more luxurious vehicle.
  • SUV. Choose this option if you need a larger vehicle that can fit up to six people, like UberXL or Lyft XL.

After you’ve chosen the type of vehicle you need, you will choose your pickup location. You can find your location using your phone’s location services or you can manually adjust the address for accuracy. Next, you will enter the drop-off location. You will then receive an estimate for your ride cost as well as an estimated time of arrival.

Juno uses a similar algorithm to other rideshare services to determine its fares. There is a base fare and minimum fare, which are determined by the time and distance of the ride. Like other rideshare apps, Juno also has high-demand pricing, which adjusts fare prices during times of high demand.

Once you request a ride, the driver will come to your destination to pick you up. The app shows your progress during the ride and continuously updates the estimated time of arrival. After the ride is complete, you can rate your driver and leave a tip using the app. As with other services, tipping is optional but appreciated for drivers who provide an exceptional customer experience.

Juno has an affiliate program for riders. When a rider refers a friend to Juno, both the rider and their friend get 30 percent of all rides for two weeks when the referred person takes their first ride. This is a great incentive for riders who enjoy their experience with Juno and want to earn a discount on future rides.

Get Started With Juno

Juno was designed to be a better alternative for rideshare drivers, and given the lower commission rates, it just may be. This is certainly a viable alternative to driving for Lyft and Uber if you are trying to make some extra cash on different rideshare apps.

Getting started with Juno is easy. You just need to request an interview through the Juno website. If you aren’t currently located in New York City or one of the New Jersey cities that Juno operates in, stay tuned as it may be coming to a city near you sometime soon.
