Caviar Delivery Driver Pickup

Caviar Courier Guide: Become a Caviar Driver

[toc]

With the number of delivery services popping up all over the country, it isn’t a surprise that many individuals are choosing to become delivery drivers. It’s a great way to earn extra cash, but the company you partner with is a key component in your overall success. One of the fastest growing on demand delivery apps is Caviar, a great option whether you want to boost your current income or work full time.

What Is a Courier?

Caviar is a food delivery service and couriers are the delivery drivers. Customers utilize the Caviar app, which is available for both Apple and Android devices, to order food from partnering restaurants in the area.

Caviar focuses exclusively on food, usually from higher end restaurants. A single focus provides customers with an upscale image, likely to build loyalty and keep patrons coming back again. The focus on higher end restaurants can also lead to higher tips for drivers. Caviar also has exclusive relationships with many of the restaurants on the platform.

Caviar delivery also offers a great feature that gives it the upper hand compared to competitors like Doordash and UberEats: its commercial focus. Caviar makes it extremely easy for businesses to put in group orders for their teams, allowing each person to add their own dishes. Companies can also create corporate accounts so their employees can order on a regular basis as well as request catering. Since the size of the order is factored into a courier’s payment, this feature boosts your potential single-delivery earnings as a Caviar courier.

As a courier, you’ll accept delivery requests in your area and receive a payment for each. Caviar delivery drivers can choose which jobs they take, so you aren’t required to accept a request. When you do accept a delivery, you’ll drive to the restaurant, pick up the order, and deliver it to the customer. The process is truly as simple as that.

Here’s a great video explainer Caviar put together for drivers.

Courier Pay

Instead of a set delivery amount for each location, Caviar uses its own algorithm to determine the driver’s earning for every single order. Their formula factors in mileage, expected time, and size of the delivery. Fortunately, drivers have the opportunity to view the prospective payout before accepting a delivery.

Caviar drivers can earn up to $25 per hour. This is according to Caviar, but actually seems backed up by responses from couriers online. However, there are a variety of factors that determine driver pay.

Current location prices and demand are the most unpredictable factors of the job, so what Caviar DC drivers make on average is likely to be drastically different than Caviar Chicago drivers. As a result, the best way to determine an accurate hourly estimate is to speak with delivery drivers in your area.

Caviar Driver Sign Up Bonus

As a new Caviar delivery driver, you may be eligible for a sign up bonus. Start your application (and fill in your city) to see your amount. Caviar sign up bonus amounts vary by city, but are usually around $50.

Be sure to check out Doordash as well. They currently deliver in 1,800 markets across all 50 states.

Cash App

Caviar does offer instant pay for couriers using their Cash App. This program allows Caviar couriers to process their payouts more quickly. Instead of waiting for four to five days for your earnings to transfer, you’ll have instant access to the funds.

Caviar Driver Requirements

To deliver for Caviar, you need to meet certain requiements. Here is a breakdown of Caviar’s requirements:

  • Age: Couriers need to be at least 18 years old.
  • Experience: None required at this point in most markets.
  • Insurance: If you are using a car or motorcycle, you need to have auto insurance.
  • Technology: Android or IOS smartphone.
  • Vehicle: You can drive for Caviar with traditional modes of transportation, including cars, trucks, bikes, and scooters.
  • Background check: Criminal backround check, and driver background check in most cases.

Age

All drivers must be at least 18 years of age. Their company’s minimum age requirement is three years younger than rideshare services like Lyft and Uber. As a result, many individuals that don’t qualify for rideshare companies based on age turn to delivery services.

Experience

One of the biggest differences between Caviar and other delivery services, like Postmates or Doordash, is their experience requirement. To join the Caviar fleet in certain markets, you may need at least one year of verifiable experience. This requirement is typically met by working for another delivery company or for a rideshare service, but you can also meet the criteria with previous experience for a local restaurant or eatery. Caviar has loosened this requirement significantly in recent months.

Technology

From accepting deliveries to payments, the whole Caviar system is based around their app. As a result, you need to have a an smartphone to qualify as a courier.

Vehicle Transportation

One of the biggest perks of Caviar is that they don’t require you to own a traditional automobile to join their courier fleet. While you can make deliveries in a car, truck, or SUV, you can also work using a bicycle or scooter.

Background Check

All Caviar delivery drivers must pass a background check. Since couriers don’t transport passengers, the standards on driving records aren’t as strict as rideshare companies. However, they are serious about background checks. Any presence of violent crimes or theft will eliminate you from the driver pool.

The Caviar Application Process

If you’re ready to drive for Caviar, you’ll need to complete the application process. Caviar is currently offering sign up bonuses for new drivers in some markets.

Luckily, Caviar utilizes one of the simplest application processes of any delivery service. Here are the four steps involved:

1. Create an Account

To apply, you’ll visit the Caviar driver signup page. Once there, you’ll create an account by entering your email and choosing a password.

Caviar Delivery Driver Sign Up

2. Provide Your Information

On the next page, you’ll enter your name, address, phone number, and birthdate. You’ll also choose which city you want to work in, and the vehicle type you’ll be using. You can be a Caviar delivery driver with a:

  • Car
  • Bike or Cargo Bike
  • Motorcycle
  • Scooter

Click “Complete Sign Up” at the bottom and wait for a response.

Caviar Courier Driver Sign Up bonus

3. Download The App And Wait For Approval

You will now be prompted to download the Caviar Courier app.

If your application is approved (you may be waitlisted), the company may contact you to set up an orientation. Local Caviar offices offer multiple orientations each week, so you’re sure to find a day and time that works with your schedule. During the meeting, any required documentation will be verified. This step is followed by a 90-minute orientation that explains the ins and outs of the delivery service so that you can efficiently complete your job as a Caviar delivery driver.

4. Background Check

Before you can hit the road and make deliveries, you’ll need to wait for your background check. Since they don’t require that applicants upload verifying documents ahead of time, this process doesn’t begin until your orientation is complete. As long as your criminal record comes back clean, you should get the official go-ahead within a week.

Caviar Delivery Cities

Caviar delivery is currently available in the following cities and their surrounding areas. However, given their recent acquisitions and expansion plans, expect this list to grow.

  • Boston, MA
  • Brooklyn, NY
  • Chicago, IL
  • Dallas, TX
  • Fort Worth, TX
  • Knoxville, TN
  • Los Angeles, CA
  • Manhattan, NY
  • Marin County, CA
  • Northern Virginia
  • Orange County, CA
  • Peninsula, CA
  • Philadelphia, PA
  • Portland, OR
  • Queens, NY
  • Richmond, VA
  • Rockville, MD
  • Sacramento, CA
  • San Francisco (and East Bay), CA
  • San Diego, CA
  • Seattle (and Eastside Seattle), WA
  • Walnut Creek, CA
  • Washington DC
  • Woodbridge, VA

The majority of these are limited to major metropolitan areas. So, if you want to drive for Caviar Philadelphia, there’s an opportunity available, but in more rural locations, like Springfield, IL, there isn’t an option for you yet. However, the company is working to rapidly expand their markets. If they’re not currently in your city, they may be soon.

While the actual job is straightforward, there are a variety of things you should consider before deciding to join the fleet. Take a closer look at the specifics of what it means to be a Caviar courier, below.

Caviar Insurance Coverage

You do not need additional auto insurance to drive for Caviar.

Caviar Occupational Accident Insurance

Caviar, in a first for delivery companies, recently began covering all couriers for accidents that occur on the job. The coverage is free, and active as soon as a driver accepts a delivery.

The policy is provided through OneBeacon.

Caviar Occupational Accident Benefits

  • Up to $1M per accident
  • $100k accidental death benefit & survivor’s benefits for dependents
  • Disability, both temporary and continuous, at 50% of average weekly earnings

Caviar is the only one of the major delivery companies to offer this coverage for free on all deliveries.

Additional Benefits of Becoming a Caviar Courier

In terms of delivery services, Caviar stands out from the pack for a number of reasons. Here are a few benefits you’ll receive as a courier:

  • Upfront Estimates: While the company doesn’t use flat rates for their delivery service, they do provide upfront estimates to drivers before they accept an order. This factor is one of the top perks for driving for Caviar. It takes the guesswork out of each order’s earnings so that you know exactly what you’re getting into before you accept the job.
  • Instant Payouts: As a Caviar delivery driver, you can transfer your earnings to a traditional bank account, but there’s typically a wait time for the transaction to process. To combat this issue, Caviar has partnered with Cash App. The service provides a payout-specific account and a debit card. If you choose to utilize this service, you can instantly transfer your payments directly to Cash App and access your money instantly with the Caviar debit card.
  • Schedule Freedom: As a courier, you operate as an independent contractor. This translates to complete freedom with regards to your work schedule. You can work when you want, for as long as you want. Such flexibility provides the opportunity to set your own income goals because you’re not tied down by a specific salary or hourly wage.

These benefits aren’t entirely exclusive to Caviar, but they do make the company a popular choice for delivery drivers.

Uber Eats Driver Guide: Sign Up As An Uber Delivery Driver

Uber is no longer just a rideshare service. In August 2014, the rideshare giant launched a food delivery service to compete with Postmates. It was first called Uber Fresh, and then quickly rebranded UberEats. I was an original Uber Eats driver for the pilot program.

At that time, customers were only offered pre-made meals that drivers would pick up at distribution points. Each day (at lunch and dinner time only) there would be a set menu from a few restaurants.

Since then, the company has shifted to a model where an UberEats driver picks up customers’ orders from restaurants (often those without a delivery service) and deliver them for a fee. They also made the name two words, Uber Eats instead of UberEats.

Expanding rapidly, Uber Eats (sometimes called Uber delivery) is now available in over 300 cities around the world. If you’re interested in earning extra cash by becoming an Uber Eats driver and you’d like to know how it works, here’s everything you need to know.

Sign Up To Drive For Uber Eats With An Uber Promo Code

If you sign up to be an Uber delivery driver using a promo code, you could be eligible for an earnings guarantee of up to $2800. Guarantee amount is determined by city.

Current Uber Drivers: How To Opt-In To Uber Eats

If you’re already a current driver for Uber, all you’ll need to do to start delivering is opt-in to Uber Eats. Simply go to your Uber Driver app and, in the home screen, scroll down to the message that reads “Get More Requests by Upgrading to Delivery.” Then, click on “Yes! I want to do delivery” and follow the subsequent prompts to add Uber Eats to your profile.

If you don’t see the message, or you run into problems activating your delivery account, contact Uber Support and ask for Uber Eats to be added to your profile. You can also opt in by going to partners.uber.com, clicking deliveries, and activating Uber Eats on your account.

How Does Uber Eats Work?

As a driver for Uber Eats, you will receive a request for a delivery much like you would for an Uber ride. The delivery job will pop up on your screen, and you tap the screen to accept the job.

drive for uber eats - ubereats driver 1

Then, you’ll see information about the pickup location and order. This will allow you to see the order’s contents along with the customer’s name and order number, which you will give to the restaurant employees.

You’ll click navigate for directions and drive to the restaurant to pick up the order.

drive for uber eats - ubereats driver pickup

Once you’ve picked up the food, you deliver it to the customer.

Uber delivery - uber eats driver delivery drop off

Payments are handled within the app, so you will not need to deal with any money. You are then paid for the delivery service.

Depending on the city you are in and the order you are delivering, you may need to get out of your car to complete the delivery. Check your app to see if you’re making a curbside delivery or a walk-in drop-off.

In a curbside delivery, the customer will get a text indicating that you’ve arrived, and you can also call them to be sure they know their food is there. Then, you’ll wait for them to come down so you can hand them their food through the window. A walk-in drop-off means you’ll need to meet them at their door with their food, calling them if you have any problem finding the address.

Uber has also put together a great Uber delivery driver guide and a list of great Uber Eats driver tips. These guides and the info on this page should come in handy as you get started.

Driving Uber Eats and UberX at the same time

Since Uber Eats’ parent organization is Uber, you’ll also have the opportunity to give rides for Uber at the same time you deliver food for Uber Eats (if you and your vehicle have been accepted by Uber).

Just go to the Uber Driver app, click the right corner, and tap on “Open to all trips.” From there, you can select if you want to accept ride or delivery requests, or both.

Uber delivery pay - trip preferences

You can uncheck either option whenever you want. Delivering for Uber Eats goes hand in hand with driving for Uber as lulls in rides tend to happen around mealtimes, when Uber Eats picks up.

Uber Eats Driver & Vehicle Requirements

While you have to be 21 to drive UberX, for Uber Eats, the requirements are much less stringent, making it ideal for those who are younger or less experienced than Uber’s stringent driving rules permit.

In most cities, you can deliver for Uber Eats in a car, or on a scooter or bicycle. In a few cities, you can even deliver on foot. The Uber Eats car requirements are also less restrictive than they are for UberX.

If you’re planning on driving for Uber Eats, these are the basic driver and vehicle requirements.

Uber Eats Car Requirements

  • Be at least 19 years old
  • Have a 2-door or 4-door car made after 1999
  • Have a valid driver’s license and vehicle insurance
  • Have at least one year of driving experience in the U.S.

Uber Eats Scooter Requirements

  • Any make or model 2-wheel scooter
  • Motor must be 50cc or less with a maximum top speed of 30 mph

Uber Eats Bike Requirements

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Have a government-issued ID

Other Uber Eats Driver Requirements

You must be able to lift at least 30 pounds.

Although food deliveries are rarely heavier than three or four pounds, you may get the odd large order that is very heavy, so you’ll need to have the ability to carry it to the customer. You may also need to walk up to the customer’s door (depending on the city), so be sure you’re ready to get a little exercise.

You must use an insulated delivery bag. Upon approval, Uber will mail you an insulated bag. Do not put hot and cold items in the same bag. You can also order your own from the wide variety of insulted bags available on Amazon.

Drive For Uber Eats

How Much Does Uber Eats Pay?

Uber delivery pay varies from market to market. Overall, Uber Eats pays about 15 to 20% less than driving for UberX, but you don’t have to deal with any passengers. Nationally, Uber drivers make about $15.50 per hour. However, in larger markets, Uber drivers routinely make more.

If you’re delivering for Uber Eats, expect to make around $12-$13 per hour when you start out, depending on your market. With a few weeks experience, that number should go up.

Uber Eats pay can vary dramatically based on the city, time of day, traffic, and day of the week. Because this is a food delivery service, lunch and dinner rushes are the most lucrative times to deliver, so it is imperative to work at these times if you want to make the most money possible.

Many UberX drivers will take Uber Eats requests when there aren’t many ride requests coming in. Since drivers receive Uber ride requests and Uber Eats delivery requests through the same Uber driver app, it’s really easy to do both.

Uber Eats calculates payments independently of time, paying only per pickup, per mile driven between pickup and customer, and per drop off. Then, Uber takes a commission (often around 25%) out of that amount. So, the payment equation is: pickup + mileage + drop off – Uber’s cut = your profit.

Uber Eats also offers an in-app tipping feature that gives customers the chance to tip you after the order is delivered and after they rate you. However, the practice of tipping varies wildly from city to city.

Uber Eats Surge and Boost

Surge and boost opportunities are also available in Uber Eats, just as with Uber itself. The boost zones will show up in your Uber Driver app and represent an earnings multiplier for areas with high order demand and not enough drivers.

The multiplier is added to your profit after Uber’s cut is taken out and does not include any tips you make. Surge pricing, the other earnings multiplier you can take advantage of, is also due to high demand but is much less predictable than boost.

Uber Eats Driver Instant Pay

Uber Eats does offer an instant pay option. No need to wait until next week to get paid. You can cash out your earnings each day, or multiple times a day if you wish. Uber does charge a $0.50 convenience fee each time you use instant pay though.

Is It Worth It?

Because Uber Eats has fewer requirements than Uber, this service is ideal for those who would otherwise be excluded from driving for Uber, including those who are still too young to drive for Uber. The car requirements are much less strict as well and no vehicle inspection is required, so it is perfect for those who do not have access to an Uber-accepted vehicle.
Another big benefit is that you’ll be able to make your own schedule and don’t need to deal with a boss, or even passengers. You can decide to drive at any time you wish and have no obligation to continue driving for Uber Eats if you want to quit or take an unplanned vacation. There are no minimum hours and no schedule, so for those who need flexibility and who prefer to work for themselves, this is a good option. You also don’t have to interact with passengers like you would when driving for Uber, making this ideal for those who don’t want strangers in their cars.
However, there are a few drawbacks to driving for Uber Eats. One major issue is that there is no guaranteed minimum pay per hour, and if the area you’re working in isn’t busy, your pay can dip to extremely low levels.

Therefore, you have to be sure you’re working during prime hours, meaning you will have a schedule of sorts if you want to make the job worth your time. You will also have to deal with traffic, waiting in restaurants, and waiting for the customer. You may also have trouble finding where you need to go or locating parking.

In short, Uber Eats is a good option if you don’t meet Uber’s requirements, need a flexible work opportunity, and value not having to deal with a boss or passengers.

Other Delivery Options

If you’re looking for a money-making delivery opportunity, Uber Eats is likely to be a good fit. However, there are other delivery services out there, including DoorDash, Caviar, and Postmates that also offer benefits similar to Uber Eats.

A great side hustle for those looking to drive for money, these delivery services will give you the chance to make extra cash for your savings, your trips, or your everyday expenses.

Uber Driver Bonus Guarantees – How They Work

Instead of a cash bonus, Uber guarantees that if you sign up with an Uber referral code and do a certain number of rides, you’ll make a certain amount for those rides (before Uber takes their cut).

For example, Uber may guarantee that you’ll make $500 for giving 60 rides. If you don’t, Uber will pay you the difference. Uber has not offered actual cash sign up bonuses of any kind since early 2017. While this makes the Uber sign up program a bit weaker than Lyft’s, Uber is still busier than Lyft in many markets. And you can still earn up to $25 per hour (sometimes more) if you sign up to drive for Uber. To see what recent Uber guarantees have been near you, click HERE or on the button below to see a list of Uber guarantees by city.

Uber Guarantee By City
Recent Uber Driver Earnings

In any case, all the sites you’ve probably seen promising an Uber referral code that will get you $4,000 or $5,000 sign up bonus are totally wrong, outdated or just plain lying.

$2,900 is currently the highest available Uber sign up bonus guarantee, available in select cities. New Uber drivers usually must complete 350 or more rides in their first 90 days to qualify for the $2900 in guaranteed earnings. Usually, if you do more than 200 rides, you’ll likely beat the guarantee amount anyway. However, it’s good to sign up with one just in case.

Best Cities To Drive Uber

In terms of the best cities to drive, Atlanta, Baltimore, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, and San Francisco are some of the best and highest earning places to drive for Uber.

How The Uber Invite Code Used To Work

For a number of years, the Uber sign up bonus or Uber invite code worked like this.

To become a driver in San Francisco, you would sign up using an Uber referral code. Uber might offer the new driver a $1000 bonus if they completed 150 rides in their first 60 days. This sign up bonus was on top of anything the Uber driver earned giving those 150 rides.

The Uber driver promo bonus amounts could range from $500 all the way up to $2,000. Los Angeles and San Francisco even had a $5000 Uber sign up bonus for a short while.

The ride requirements also varied. Some of the Uber driver promotions only required 50 or 100 rides, while others (like the L.A. and S.F. bonus above) required over 1,000 rides.

If the San Francisco Uber driver in the example above was full time, they could finish those 150 rides in a couple of weeks and go home with $3000 or more.

While those Uber sign up bonuses are long gone, Uber still offers a sign up guarantee of up to $2,000 in earnings.

If you’d like to see what your Uber sign up bonus guarantee is, simply click on the image below. Or, read on to learn why the Uber new driver bonus changed, and how the current Uber driver promotion works.

Why The Uber Sign Up Bonus Changed

As it turns out, those generous Uber driver promos were costing Uber a lot of money, so they decided to switch to guaranteed earnings. The guaranteed earnings usually range from $300 to $2000. However, on rare occasions, Uber raises the sign up referral code amount. In 2018 & 2019, the Uber new driver promo for certain cities has reached $2,800 (Washington, D.C. and Boston for example).

How The Current Uber Sign Up Bonus And Uber Invite Codes Work

Instead of a cash bonus, Uber is now offering a guaranteed payout if you use an Uber invite code. For example, Uber may offer a new driver guaranteed earnings of $500 if a new driver completes 40 rides in their first 30 days.

If the new driver gives 40 rides and only makes $400, Uber will pay the driver $100.

The number of rides and the bonus amount varies by city. The higher the ride requirement, the higher the guarantee.

Recently, the most popular guarantee and ride amounts have been around $550 for completing 75 rides, or $1025 for completing 140 rides. Again, the number of Uber rides you must complete, and the time you have to complete the rides, varies by city

Recently, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, Seattle, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Dallas, and upstate New York have had some of the higher Uber sign up bonus guarantees. But keep in mind, the Uber sign up bonus amounts change very frequently.

Beware False Claims About Uber Invite Code and Uber Driver Promo Amounts

Please be aware that if you see an Uber invite code that promises you $3000 or $5000, it’s fake, or will not be for that amount.

Many drivers are posting their Uber referral codes along with false claims about the amount of money new drivers can get from those referral codes. This leaves many new drivers feeling disappointed or ripped off when the actual sign up bonus/guarantee from Uber is much less.

We won’t make false claims about our Uber driver promos, sign up bonuses or guarantees. Instead, we’ll just tell you the truth about how the Uber

The Uber sign up bonus, which is now a guarantee, is based primarily on the city you drive in. Also, the guarantee amounts change frequently.

[/su_box]

If you use our code (i9tz1) to sign up, not only do you get a sign up guarantee, Rideshare Central also gets a referral bonus if you complete the number of rides designated by Uber within a set period of time. Usually, our bonus is around the $50-$100 range.

If you sign up for Uber, but do not complete the set number of rides (usually within 30 days), we do not receive a referral bonus.

Should I Sign Up With A Higher Or Lower Uber Sign Up Guarantee?

Most of the time, the Uber sign up bonus guarantee is in the $300 – $800 range.  However, the Uber driver bonus guarantee in most cities tops out at $600. Even so, drivers have recently received $1,000, $2000, or even $2900 Uber guarantees in some cities.

That being said, it’s often a better idea to sign up with a lower Uber sign up guarantee ($300 – $600). The reason comes down to experience.

Pretty much all Uber drivers earn more after their first 100 rides, because the experience of those first 100 rides makes you a much better and more efficient driver. After 100 rides, a new Uber driver tends to complete more rides, and earn more, per hour. A new Uber driver is also far more likely to need the guarantee during those first 50 to 100 rides. Most of the smaller Uber guarantees are for 40 to 75 rides, so there’s a much greater chance of missing the guarantee amount during your first 100 rides.

The larger guarantees are usually for 200 or more rides. By that time, a new Uber driver is probably efficient enough to earn more than the guarantee amount. If the new Uber driver does that, they get nothing. On the higher guarantee amounts ($1000 or more), the driver almost always gets nothing because the number of rides required almost always means they’ll gross more than the guarantee amount. This is not the case with the lower Uber sign up guarantee amount. Many new drivers miss the smaller guarantee amounts and Uber makes up the difference. So, while the large $1300 Uber guarantee may be tempting, it’s often useless, and the $400 to $600 Uber guarantee is usually the better choice.

Is The Uber Sign Up Bonus Really Gone?

Yes, the uber sign up bonus is gone. Here’s an example of the page you’ll see if you go to sign up for Uber with a driver referral code.

Uber Sign up Bonus

Nothing about an Uber sign up bonus there. Instead, it says you’re “guaranteed $1,025 in total payout for your first 100 trips.” However, even though the page says you’re guaranteed $1,025, right afterwards it says, “Guarantee amounts vary and are determined by city.” Basically, the page could say you’re guaranteed $10,000, but until you fill in your information and start your application, you won’t know what you’re bonus is.

How much will your Uber sign up bonus guarantee be?

The amount of your Uber driver sign up bonus guarantee is determined by your city. The amount of the guarantees change frequently which is why it’s difficult to post an accurate and up to date list. We’ve posted a list of Uber sign up bonus guarantees by city below and we try and keep it updated. However, some cities have had their Uber sign up bonus change multiple times in a week. The only guaranteed way to find out what your Uber sign up guaranteed earnings amount will be is to sign up with a driver referral code.

The Uber Invite Code

How to Use Our Uber Driver Invite Code

The quickest way to start earning money as an Uber driver is by using our Uber invite code. Once you sign up and get approved, you will be eligible to receive a guaranteed payout when you hit the required number of rides in your city. Generally, the Uber guaranteed payout will be more than you would normally earn doing those number of rides.

Lyft Sign up Bonus Lyft Driver Promo Code
[/su_box]

As noted before, the best Uber driver promotions are offered either in large cities like Boston, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, or San Francisco, or in markets where Uber needs to recruit more drivers. These are generally where you see the guarantee amounts around $1000.  In order to be eligible for the Uber driver promo guarantee, you must sign up with an Uber driver promo code. If you do not enter the code when you apply, you will not be eligible for the Uber sign up bonus guaranteed earnings.

Using our Uber invite code is pretty easy. Simply click here to begin an application with our promo code (i9tz1).

Additional Information – The Uber Invite Code

Please keep the following in mind when applying for Uber:

  • You can only use one Uber driver promo code when signing up. No stacking of promo codes to increase your Uber sign up bonus is allowed.
  • After you are approved, you will receive your Uber sign up bonus guarantee once you have reached the required number of rides. If you earn less than the guarantee amount while completing your rides, Uber will credit your account the difference. So, if you’re guarantee is $1025 for 100 rides, but you only earn $900 for those rides, Uber will credit your account $125.
  • The Uber bonus terms are subject to change and not guaranteed.
  • If you do not enter an Uber driver invite code when applying, you will not earn a bonus.
  • As an Uber driver, you are subject to Uber’s Terms of Service.
  • Being approved for Uber takes anywhere from 1 day to a couple of weeks, sometimes longer.
  • Uber can deny an application for any reason.
  • When you are completing rides towards your guarantee, the ride only counts if it’s a different passenger. You can’t give 10 short rides to a friend to hit your guarantee.

Does it matter which Uber invite code I use?

No, it really doesn’t. It matters which city you’re driving in.

I would like to be able to tell you, “Yes, if you use our code i9tz1, you will get a $2,000 guarantee for doing 10 rides. Unfortunately, this is not the case. No matter what the Uber driver invite page says, the only surefire way to know what your guarantee will be is to sign up to drive.

  2. After you click submit, Uber will ask if you will use your own car, or be renting, leasing, or purchasing a car through them.
  3. Once you decide, Uber will ask for your social security number to verify your identity.

    2. Vehicle Registration
    3. Vehicle Insurance

  7. Once you pass your background check, you will need to take your car to get an inspection. The inspection can be done at an Uber Greenlight Hub, or a number of stores suchs as Pep Boys, Jiffy Lube, or Auto Zone. The inspection cost is about $20.

Uber sign up bonus

Should i still sign up even though the Uber sign up bonus is gone?

If you’re looking for a way to make money and you think this job may be for you, then yes.

While you can’t get an Uber sign up bonus for $500 or $1500 anymore, you can still make $500 or $1500 per week by driving Uber. During busy hours, you actually can make $25 to $35 per hour in larger markets. There are usually about 20-25 busy hours a week. During the other hours, the range is more like $15 to $18 per hour.

Besides the money, it’s a pretty good gig. If you work in an office, surrounded by walls all day, driving for Uber gets you out in the world. You meet people from all walks of life, have interesting conversations, and see parts of your city you wouldn’t get to otherwise.

Don’t get me wrong. It’s a job, but it’s a job where you have most of the control. You decide when you work, who you pick up, and with the destination setting (feature allows you to only take rides towards a specific destination), where you work. You also decide when you clock in and clock out.

Uber has made a number of changes recently that benefit drivers

I’ve been pretty critical of Uber in the past, but I believe in giving credit where it’s due. As part of their “180 Days of Change”, Uber has instituted a number of changes recently that have improved the lives of drivers. They still have more work to do, but the following changes are a good start.

      1. Uber no longer deactivates you for not accepting rides. They may send you emails about it, and if you don’t take 2 or 3 rides in a row, you’re generally put in a time out (no ride requests will come in) for 5-10 minutes, sometimes up to 30 minutes. But they won’t deactivate you. This means you don’t have to take UberPool rides (shared rides, lower fares)  if you don’t want to. Most drivers tend to have an acceptance rate above 85-90%, but I’ve seen some drivers with acceptance rates around 50 or 60%, and they’ve been driving for months. They will still deactivate you if you have a high cancellation rate.
    1. Uber now allows tipping in the app. Lyft has had this for a while, and Uber has finally caught up. Drivers keep 100% of all tips. How much can tips add to your pay? It varies. I’ve seen some drivers take home an extra 15% in tips and others who only take home an extra 5%. So far, it’s been all over the place, but it’s better than it used to be, which was 0%.
    2. Uber drivers can now call in for help. Before, you had to send messages to support in the app, and wait hours, or longer, for them to get back to you. Now, if a driver needs to get in contact with Uber, they can call and talk to a human being.

[su_box title=”Uber Drivers Can Now Call A Helpline” style=”soft” box_color=”#d1a927″ title_color=”#d1274f”]

Uber sign up bonus
[/su_box]

  1. Uber now allows drivers six destination settings per day. Say you want only want rides towards a specific destination, like the airport, or your home. You can set that address in the Uber driver app, and it will only give you rides in that direction. You can even set the time you want to arrive at your destination. Until a couple of months ago, drivers were only allowed to use this feature twice a day. Six times is more like it.
    1. Lyft allowed their drivers to use a similar feature three times a day. After Uber upped their limit to six, Lyft followed suit. So, if you drive for both Uber and Lyft, you can now set your destination twelve times a day. This is very helpful if you want to do a lot of lucrative airport rides.

Should i sign up for Uber if i already Drive With Lyft?

Yes. While most drivers prefer Lyft, it’s always good to have a backup in case you get deactivated from the Lyft system, even temporarily. This happened to a driver I knew. A passenger claimed she was driving under the influence (she doesn’t drink). When something like this happens, both Uber and Lyft will temporarily deactivate the driver for 48 hours while they investigate. She was reactivated 48 hours later, but that deactivation cost her a Power Driver Bonus that week. She’s now signed up for both Uber and Lyft.

Another reason to sign up for both is that every now and then, the Uber or Lyft systems may go out for a little bit. It doesn’t happen often, but when Lyft goes down, demand tends to go way up on Uber. Likewise, in the rare occasion of an Uber system crash, demand on Lyft skyrockets.

Uber Sign Up Bonus – New Uber Drivers Cash Incentives and Guarantees

Uber offers cash incentives during the week if a driver completes a certain number of rides. Generally, they offer a weekday incentive (Monday – Thursday) and weekend incentive. For example, Uber may offer a driver an extra $150 for completing 40 rides between Monday and Thursday, and an extra $180 for completing 55 rides between Friday and Sunday. They usually offer smaller incentives as well (20 rides for an extra $75) so part-time drivers are not left out.

How Much Can I Make Driving For Uber?

Driver Pay on Uber

While the average is about $15-$20 per hour, there is a lot of variation from driver to driver and city to city. Experienced, full-time drivers can make around $25 per hour in the larger markets. Experienced part-time drivers can make $25-$30 per hour if they only drive during busy hours.  If they’re on Uber Select, or Uber XL, they can make even more. If you’re just starting out though, a more realistic expectation is around $15-$18 per hour. If you’re only looking to drive ten busy (rush hour or weekend nights) hours a week, you can probably make a bit more.

Here’s what some drivers have been able to take home recently in one day and one week. Keep in mind, some of these drivers pulled long hours to reach these numbers, but they did it.

Top Cities For Uber Drivers

Los Angeles – The city of angels is one of the largest Uber markets in the world. Whether you’re driving someone to Disneyland or Dodger Stadium, you can count on doing a lot of rides in a city of 18 million people. It’s also home to LAX, a very busy airport. One Uber ride from LAX to Beverly Hills can net a driver $25 on UberX, or $50 on Uber Select. Recently, the Los Angeles Uber sign up bonus was $1,200 per week guaranteed if you drive for 50 hours.

Philadelphia – The city of brotherly love is home to the Liberty Bell, the Sixers and a couple million people who love to Uber. Even better, the Philadelphia Uber guarantee was recently $500 for 40 rides. An Uber ride from PHL to the University of Pennsylvania can net a driver $20-$24, or more with surge.

Chicago – The windy city is home to the World Champion Chicago Cubs and was one of the earliest Uber markets. Popular destinations for Uber passengers in Chicago include Navy Pier, The Lincoln Park Zoo, and The Magnificent Mile. Don’t forget, Chicago has two large airports. So if you sign up to drive for Uber in Chicago, expect to be doing lucrative airport runs from the loop to Midway and O’Hare.

Dallas – Whether you’re taking riders to AT&T Stadium to see the Cowboys, to the world class Dallas Arboretum, or to DFW, you can be sure you’ll learn your way around. And with plenty of business and tourism traffic, you can be sure you’ll be kept busy on your way to an Uber sign up bonus guarantee, which was recently $700 for 80 rides.

San Diego – If you drive for Uber in San Diego, you’ll definitely learn the shortcuts to the world famous San Diego Zoo. Also, people walk around El Prado, but the often take an Uber to get there. Same goes for Balboa Park. The last Uber sign up bonus I heard about in San Diego was $400 guaranteed for 45 rides.

Atlanta – Expect to be taking a few passengers to the new Mercedes-Benz stadium to see the Falcons if you drive for Uber in Atlanta. You may also wind up taking passengers to an amazing aquarium or the Center for Civil and Human Rights. Don’t forget, Atlanta has terrible public transportation, so also expect a number of lucrative trips to and from the Atlanta suburbs like Alpharetta.

San Francisco – San Francisco is the city where Uber started. If you drive for Uber in San Francisco, expect to be busy as you take riders to Chinatown, Fisherman’s Wharf, or to a Giants game. You can also expect some lucrative trips to Sonoma, Napa, and Silicon Valley.

Uber Vehicle Requirements for 2018

Uber is very flexible in terms of the vehicle they allow, but there are a few Uber requirements that all vehicles must adhere to. If your vehicle does not meet these requirements, you may be approved to drive for Uber, but your vehicle will not.

You do not need to own a vehicle to drive with for Uber. However, if you do, these are the requirements.

  1. The vehicle must have a valid registration and a clean title. However, the vehicle does not have to be in your name.
  2. The vehicle must have four doors and a minimum of five seatbelts.
  3. The vehicle must be in good working order. Uber requires an annual vehicle inspection.
  4. The vehicle must be model year 2002 or newer for Uber. However, in some cities, the requirements are more strict. For Uber Select, Uber XL, and Uber Black, the requirements are also more strict, and vary by city.

If your vehicle does not meet these requirements, but you still want to drive for Uber, check out our Vehicle Financing page for ways to rent or purchase a vehicle for Uber, Lyft, or both.

Uber Driver Requirements for 2018

What is Uber?

Why Should I Drive For Uber?

Uber, and it’s competitor Lyft, have become the future of transportation. In the cities where Uber and Lyft operate, people who used to take cabs now use Uber or Lyft. People who used to take public transportation will often use UberPool or Lyft Line instead. Because both services partner with drivers who use their own cars, the service is friendlier and the cars are in better condition than most taxis.

Uber was founded in 2009 to provide this type of alternative transportation and now operates in over 700 cities in 84 countries across the world. Pretty impressive. Over 200,000 people now drive for Uber and with their driver sign up bonus guarantees, and their weekly driver incentives, this number is sure to keep growing.

While Uber has had its share of public relations troubles over the past year, the job itself is usually pretty great. For one thing, it is the most flexible job in the world. You can work as many, or as few, hours per week as you want. About 80% of Uber drivers are part time and many people have found that driving for Uber is a great way to bring in a couple extra hundred bucks a week. While drivers used to have to give 1 ride every 30 days to stay active, that is no longer the case.

Besides a great way to earn some extra cash, Uber is also a great way to learn your city, talk with interesting people, and even network. While not every rider wants to have a conversation, many do, and sometimes you wind up having a wonderful talk. If you have another business, in most cities, you can advertise that business in your vehicle. I’ve wound up picking up a number of web development jobs over the past three years while driving for Uber.

Sure, on occasion, you may have an unpleasant rider. But those occasions are pretty rare. In general, driving for Uber is a great way to make extra money, see your city, and have an occasional great conversation. If you’re full time, Uber is a great way to make about $1,000 per week, sometimes more.

Uber Insurance

Am I covered when I’m driving for Uber?

Uber’s insurance policy provides liability and contingent collision coverage. When you turn the app on, you have liability coverage through Uber in the amount of $25k/$50k and $25k for property damage. Once you accept a rider request, or have a rider in the car, Uber provides $1,000,000 liability and uninsured driver coverage, with a $1,000 deductible. For more on information on insurance coverage, please visit our Rideshare Insurance page.

Rideshare Central recommends purchasing a rideshare insurance policy for additional coverage and peace of mind while driving for Uber or Lyft.

Uber Driver Pay

How much are drivers paid and when are the best times to driver?

When considering whether you should sign up for Uber, don’t just consider the sign up bonuses or guarantees. You should also consider how much you can make during the busy hours. In many cities, the drivers who work during evening and morning rush hours and on the weekends can make up to $35 per hour. In general, the top times to drive for Uber during the week are between 6am and 9am, and 5pm and 8pm. During weekends, the best times to drive are between 6pm and 8pm, and between 10pm and 3am on Fridays and Saturdays.

Uber drivers are paid on time and distance. Each ride has a base fare. Beyond that, drivers are paid a certain amount per mile, and per minute wait time. If a rider does not show up, a driver may cancel after five minutes and receive a $5 cancellation fee ($1.60 cancellation on Pool rides).

The Uber pay period begins at 4am on Mondays and ends at 4am the following Monday. Drivers receive a pay statement on Tuesday that includes driving activity from the prior week.

Uber also offers driver incentives weekday and weekend incentives. Drivers can use these incentives to increase their earnings by between $100 and $400. The weekday incentive may offer a driver an extra $150 if they complete 40 rides between Monday and Thursday. The weekend incentive may offer a driver and extra $200 if they complete 50 rides between Friday and Sunday.

Frequently Asked Uber Questions

When is the best time to drive?

Overall, weekends are the most lucrative. Not just weekend nights, the whole weekend. Also, traffic is lighter overall on weekends, so you get better mileage. Besides that, the morning and evening rush hours are where the most money is.

Do I have to give a minimum number of rides to stay active?

You used to have to give one ride every thirty days to stay active, but that is no longer the case.

Is one Uber sign up bonus code better than another?

Not really. The bonus tends to be based on the city you want to drive in more than the code.

How do Uber drivers get paid?

Uber drivers are paid weekly via direct deposit. Drivers can also cash out instantly during the week (multiple times).

When will I receive my Uber driver bonus?

Your Uber sign up bonus guarantee will be credited to your account after you complete the required number of rides.

Can I drive a vehicle with a salvage title for Uber?

No, all vehicles on the Uber platform must have a clean title.

Can I use another Uber driver promo code once I’ve completed the ride requirements?

No, but you will be able to use your own Uber invite code to refer other drivers.

Do I have to accept every ride?

No, Uber does not require a specific acceptance rate. However, Uber may deactivate you if you cancel too many rides. It’s better to not accept a ride, than to accept and then cancel.

How long do I have to wait for an Uber rider before cancelling?

If you wait five minutes and then cancel, you will receive a $5 cancellation fee. On UberPool, you only have to wait 2 minutes but the cancellation fee is only $1.60.

What is the difference between an Uber invite code, an Uber driver promo code, and an Uber sign up bonus code?

There is no difference. They’re the same thing.

instacart shopper pay instacart jobs

Instacart Shopper Sign Up Page And Guide

We all could use some extra cash right? More than 44 million Americans agree and have a side hustle. Whether you are saving for something specific, just looking to supplement your income, or considering a full time job, becoming an Instacart shopper could be the solution you are looking for.

It’s a job where you don’t have to report to an office, you can set your own schedule, and you have the freedom to make as much as you want depending on how long and how quickly you work. Read on to learn more about Instacart, how to use the Instacart Shopper app, and what it’s like to shop and deliver groceries for Instacart.

What Is Instacart?

Instacart is the leading grocery delivery app. People using the app submit a shopping list that shoppers then fill and deliver.

Once the Instacart shopper gathers all the items and checks out, the shopper then delivers the items to the customer’s home. If you don’t have a car or other mode of transportation, don’t worry. You can still be an Instacart shopper. Another driver for Instacart will handle the delivery portion of the order. If you are interested in working for yourself but not comfortable driving strangers around, Instacart is for you!

Sign up to be an Instacart Shopper

To qualify to be a shopper for Instacart there are a few requirements you need to satisfy. You need to be at least 18 or 21 years old depending on the state you live in.

You need to have a relatively new smartphone, Android or IOS (Iphone). You will also need to be able to lift at least 30 pounds without assistance. As with most on demand services, Instacart does run a background check. You will also have to pass a couple of short online food handling safety tests, but that’s about it as far as the requirements go. To start your Instacart application, click HERE or on the blue button below.

Become An Instacart Shopper

Instacart jobs: Two kinds of Instacart Shoppers

There are two different types of Instacart shoppers, in store shoppers, and full service shoppers. In store shoppers collect the items on the list and pay for them at checkout using a PEX credit card provided by Instacart. They then place the items in an area designated for pickup by a delivery driver. Full service shoppers deliver the items themselves after checking out.

When it comes to Instacart jobs, most Instacart shoppers are full service. However, if you just want to be an in store shopper, you can do that too.

instacart shopper

The Instacart application process

Once you determine that you satisfy all of the Instacart requirements, you can begin your application. You’ll provide your contact information, and give the company permission to run the background check. You will be texted a link to download the shopper app. You will do all of your work through the app.

You will also need to get some insulated food bags to help control the temperature of the food during delivery. You can get them directly from Instacart, but you’re probably better off choosing from the wide variety of insulated delivery bags available on Amazon.

Answer a few questions

Instacart asks a few basic questions as part of the screening process. Don’t worry they aren’t hard, just be positive and friendly in your answers.

They will ask you why you want to work for Instacart. They will probably want to know about a time you delivered amazing customer service.

You can also expect some food safety quizzing. Something like, you are tasked with buying organic strawberries but there is only one container and they are bit moldy on the bottom. What do you do?

You will then choose from four options, buy them anyway, buy the non-organic, don’t buy any, or ask the customer what they would prefer. Great customer service would be checking with the customer.

The last question asks that you give a sample text. What would you say to your customer in the moldy strawberry situation?

Using the Instacart Shopper app

Although you’ll have to wait to pass your background check to start shopping, you can sign up for a shift while you’re waiting. Choose a shift about a week in the future so Instacart has time to complete your background check.

Instacart hours

When it comes time for your shift, you will get a notification reminding you so you are ready when your shift starts. As soon as your shift starts it is possible for you to start getting delivery orders, or batches, as Instacart calls them. You’re first few orders will likely be small (10-20 items total), so you have time to get used to the app. After a few orders, you’ll likely get a big one (50 to 100 items total).

When you get your first order, accept the order and go to the store to start shopping.

instacart accept order with items

Once in the store, you will gather the items that are on the list created by the customer, using the Instacart shopper app to scan the item barcodes as you go. You will need to update your progress as you go. Be sure to make note of any changes such as unavailable items that require substitutions or a refund.

Once you’ve gathered everything on the list, you’ll pay for the groceries with your Instacart issued card.

Then, you’ll bag and deliver the groceries to the customer’s home.

You will have a window of time to complete the order. Keep in mind though you won’t get another order until this one is completed.

Once you’ve completed the order, you will wait for the next one. This could happen immediately or take a bit of time.

What if you can’t find an item?

Sometimes when you are at a store, you won’t be able to find an item. This could be because you just can’t find the item, it’s out of stock, or the store doesn’t carry the item anymore.

The first thing you should do is find a store employee and ask where the item might be located. This is the easiest solution, maybe you are just looking in the wrong location in the store.

If the item is out of stock or discontinued look for an item that is a comparable to the one the customer requested.

Comparable items

Let’s say that a customer requested a specific brand of organic milk at 2%. If the 2% is unavailable look for that same brand but maybe in a different fat percentage such as 1%

If that isn’t possible, look for another brand of organic milk in the same fat percentage. If that isn’t possible you have two options, reach out to the customer and let them know, or issue a refund.

The customer will then go into the app and see that you have requested a substitution. They will either approve or deny the substitution.

Refunds

Sometimes you just can’t find a replacement no matter how hard you try. If the customer requests blood oranges and they are out of stock. The customer may not want regular oranges.

In this case, you would select the item on the grocery list and choose to refund that item. It will be moved from the main list and the customer will be notified of the refund.

Ratings

Once you deliver the groceries your customer will be able to give you a rating. With great customer service, you will be getting 5-star ratings in no time!

Tips for being an Instacart Shopper or Instacart delivery driver

There are few things that you will learn along the way that will make your life easier as an Instacar shopper. We are going to give you the advantage and give you some tips before you get started.

Early Access

If it’s available, take advantage of early access in your first couple of weeks. Early access allows you to select your hours for the coming week at 9 am on Sunday morning. Most new shoppers will have early access for a limited time.

Instacart Early access

Once your new shopper automatic status runs out, you will have to earn it by working the required hours. Generally, this means working a total of 90 hours in the current three week period.

If you don’t want to work for many hours, you can also work a total of 25 hours that are on the weekend. Achieve either threshold, and you will be able to select your hours before others who have not worked enough.

If you don’t want to work that many hours that’s ok too! Hours tend to become available throughout the week. Just keep checking back in with the app.

Give Yourself a Break

You may be tempted to sign up for a ten-hour block of time. This may not be so bad if it is a slow day.

However, if it is a busy day, you will be getting one order after another. There will be no time for you stop, take a break, grab something to eat.

Make sure you schedule a time to take care of yourself and your family. It is tempting to continually work nonstop to earn the most money.

Too many hours and you will burn yourself out. Try strategically scheduling yourself to work two, two-hour blocks, then take a break, and work another four hours.

Taxes

As a shopper, you are considered an independent contractor. This means that if you earn more than $600 in a year you need to claim it on your taxes.

Don’t worry this is a very easy process. If you more than the $600 threshold Instacart will automatically contact you and send you a 1099 tax form.

You Can Work Before Your Shift

In the 30 minute window before your shift is set to begin it is possible to get an order if there is one available. If you are ready early you need to promptly accept the order.

If you do not promptly accept, it will move on to the next person. You won’t be punished for not accepting this order.

Pay Attention to Organic

It is very important to pay attention to whether or not someone has requested organic. When you are in the store make sure that you are selecting produce that is organic.

Stores Where a Shopper Would Be Selecting Groceries

Instacart is currently in thirty-eight states and Washington DC. They are everywhere from large metro cities to smaller communities.

Major grocery stores such as Publix, Kroger, The Food Emporium, Shaw’s, Whole Foods, Sam’s Club, and Costco, all partner with Instacart. Customers can also order from other stores such as CVS, Petco, and ABC Liquors.

Start Earning Extra Cash

If you are looking for the freedom of working for yourself but don’t want to be a taxi, Instacart is defintely for you. If you know the layout of a grocery store like your own home, being an Instacart shopper will be a good fit.

Download the app and start the onboarding process. You will be picking up shifts and delivering groceries in no time!

Should I Sign Up For Lyft or Uber?

Should I Drive With Lyft Or Uber?

Uber Vs. Lyft Driving In 2019

If you’ve thought about taking up rideshare driving, you’ve probably asked yourself, should I sign up to drive for Uber or Lyft?

The answer depends mostly on your market size, and whether you will be driving mostly in a rural area, or near an urban center.

In smaller, rural markets, or if you plan on driving mostly in the suburbs, you’re may be better off signing up to drive for Uber first.

If you’re in or near a larger market, and you plan on driving at least part of the time in the city, Lyft may be a better option.

Uber phased their sign up bonus out in 2017 and now offer guaranteed earnings, not a cash bonus on top of regular earnings. Basically, Uber will guarantee that you’ll earn a certain amount ($500 for 65 rides for example). If you don’t, Uber will make up the difference.

While it’s true that Uber still has more riders, they also have more drivers, so it’s not like that creates a huge earnings advantage. In most larger markets, drivers can now make as much, if not more, on Lyft as they can on Uber, with higher satisfaction levels. In fact, nationally, Lyft drivers earn more per hour that Uber drivers.

Whether You Sign Up For Lyft Or Uber First, Eventually Sign Up For Both

Whether you’re in a small town, or near a big city, your best course of action is to eventually sign up to drive for both Uber and Lyft. For one thing, there’s no guarantee you’ll be approved on both platforms. Also, the time it takes to be approved to drive for Uber or Lyft varies. It can take anywhere from less than a day, to several weeks. If you sign up for both, It’s likely you’ll be approved for at least one of them pretty quickly.

A couple of years ago, I wouldn’t recommend signing up for both Uber and Lyft at the same time. The main reason was that both Lyft and Uber used to have minimum requirements for drivers who wanted to get their sign up bonus. Basically, you had to give a certain number of rides in a limited amount of time. If you signed up for both at the same time, it would be hard to complete the needed number of rides to get both the Uber and Lyft bonuses.

However, since Uber dropped their sign up bonus, there’s no longer any downside to signing up for both at the same time. Once you get approved for Lyft though, you’ll want to concentrate on driving Lyft for your first 30 to 60 days, to make sure you get your entire bonus amount.

Running The Uber And Lyft Driver Apps At The Same Time

Most drivers who are signed up with both simply run both driver apps on one phone at the same time. It’s easier than it may seem. Basically, you launch both apps and go online. If a ride request comes in on Uber, you simply accept the ride and then switch over to the Lyft app and go offline. When you’re done with the Uber ride, you stay online in the Uber app, and also go online again in the Lyft app. Some drivers use the Mystro app (Android only), which takes care of the above process automatically.

Uber is still #1, but Lyft is catching up

Nationally, Uber is busier, but Lyft is growing much faster. At the end of 2016, Uber had about 84 percent of the market while Lyft only had about 16 percent. Now, Uber has about 68 percent of the market while Lyft is up to 32 percent. However that’s not the whole story. In many of the larger urban markets like Portland, San Francisco, Chicago, Detroit, Seattle, and Los Angeles, Lyft’s market share is significantly higher than 32 percent. In some markets, like San Francisco, Chicago, and Los Angeles, Lyft has almost half the market.

Uber’s growth slowed in 2017 while Lyft’s exploded

In many cities, such as Louisville, Boston, Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia, Lyft’s business more than doubled in 2017. Uber, on the other hand, only experienced growth of around 5-10% in most larger cities. And in San Francisco and New York, Uber’s business actually shrank in 2017. Part of this is due to Uber’s disastrous 2017. The #deleteUber movement that started in early 2017, along with other Uber missteps, basically halted Uber’s momentum and allowed Lyft to catch up. Lyft took advantage by expanding to dozens more U.S. cities last year, and concentrated on recruiting more passengers through incentives and discounts. Lyft has also had success recruiting drivers by continuing to offer generous sign up bonuses. Uber has stopped offering sign up bonuses and instead only offers guaranteed earnings.

Lyft’s sign up bonuses and driver approval give them a slight advantage

Besides your market area, also consider that Lyft drivers are generally more satisfied than Uber drivers. Lyft is also still offering sign up bonuses for drivers that go up to $2500! If you’re on the fence, these two factors can make the difference. However, how busy each service is in your area should be given more importance when deciding who to sign up with.

Who should sign up to drive for Uber over Lyft?

If you’re only signing up for one service, sign up for Uber if you live in a smaller town or rural area, and plan to do most of your driving in those areas. While Uber doesn’t offer a sign up bonus anymore, in many smaller markets, Uber still has over 80 percent of the market. Lyft’s business is growing faster than Uber in those areas, but Uber is still busier at this time. While you can probably make the same money on Lyft as on Uber in these areas, you’ll probably feel busier on Uber.

Who should sign up for Lyft over Uber?

If you live in or near a larger city (more than 500,000 people), and you plan on driving primarily in or near the city, consider signing up to Drive With Lyft first. Drive until you complete the Lyft sign up bonus, and then sign up for Uber.

Keep in mind that if you live in a suburb, but one that is close to a major urban center, you may be better off signing up for Lyft and heading into the city when you go online. Many drivers, especially full time drivers, live in a suburb, but will drive into San Francisco, or Chicago, or Boston, and work there. The reason they do this is that in every Uber & Lyft market in the country, the city is busier in the suburbs. It’s simply a question of population density. City centers have more people in a more confined area requesting rides. So, if you’re working in the city, you’ll get more ride requests with less downtime.

Even if you live in a suburb,  both Uber and Lyft have a destination setting which allows you to only get rides going in a certain direction. Many drivers will go online in the suburbs in the morning, but with the destination filter set towards the city center. How are Lyft and Uber different for drivers?

Lyft and Uber are very similar from a driver perspective, but there are some differences.

On shared rides (multiple passengers going to multiple destinations), Lyft pays the same rate to the driver, but Uber pays less. Uber’s shared rides are called UberPool while Lyft’s are called Lyft Line. Many Uber drivers refuse to take UberPool rides precisely because they pay less. Another difference between Lyft and Uber is that nationally, drivers earn a couple bucks more per hour on Lyft. However, this is not the case in every market and there’s a lot of variation from driver to driver.

Lyft riders also tend to tip more frequently (but not frequently enough) than Uber riders. The reason is that Uber just added an in-app tipping option six months ago, but Lyft has had it since the company started. Most Uber riders are simply used to not tipping at this point.

Lyft Power Driver Bonus vs. Uber’s Quests

Another thing to consider when signing up are the weekly driver bonuses that both Uber and Lyft offer. Lyft’s bonus is called the Power Driver Bonus. Uber’s bonuses are called quests. Basically, if you give a certain number of rides, you get a bonus. These bonuses can add between $50 – $350 to a driver’s pay each week. Uber’s top quest bonuses are usually a little easier to reach than the top Lyft bonuses, especially for part time drivers. The reason is that Uber usually offers a quest for the weekend, and one during the week. Lyft only offers a weekly bonus.

A typical power driver bonus works as follows: If a driver gives 75 rides (including 40 during busy hours), they’ll get a $90 bonus on top of their regular earnings. If they give 100 rides (including 45 during busy hours), they’ll get a $230 bonus. The highest weekly Lyft power driver bonus usually requires 145 rides, and 50 or more peak hour rides. However, this bonus usually pays around $350 – $380. Lyft drivers who hit that bonus typically earn over $1500 per week.

Uber Quests are a little different. A typical weekday quest will offer a driver and extra $55 for completing 20 rides between Monday and Thursday, or an extra $140 if they complete 70 rides between Monday and Thursday. They will also offer a weekend quest with similar numbers. Full time drivers who fulfill both quests also typically earn over $1200 per week.

One more reason you should eventually sign up for both Uber and Lyft.

Whether you decide to sign up for Uber or Lyft, you should also sign up for the other service. For one thing, this gives you two potential revenue streams instead of one. This can come in handy if you ever get temporarily deactivated from one platform (it happens). Also, in most markets, Lyft is busier in certain areas than Uber, while Uber is dominant in other parts of the market.

In Los Angeles for example, Uber has a higher overall market share, but Lyft is busier in certain parts of the city, and you can make the same money driving in Los Angeles for Lyft as you could on Uber. However, if you’re in the Inland Empire, you should sign up for Uber first, then Lyft. Uber’s much busier in the Inland Empire. However, if you drive there, there’s a decent chance a ride will take you into Los Angeles, where the playing field is more even. If that happens, even if you live in the Inland Empire, you’ll want to have both apps running when you hit Los Angeles. In Orange County, if you’re mostly going to work in Irvine, you can sign up for either. However, if you’re closer to Laguna Niguel, sign up with Uber first.

Final Thought: Uber vs. Lyft

While this isn’t a hard and fast rule, if you live in a city with over a million people, and you plan on driving there, you should strongly consider signing up to drive with Lyft, especially when you take the Lyft sign up bonus into account. However, if you’re in a smaller city or town, or a rural area, you’re likely better off signing up for Uber. At the end of the day though, your best bet is to sign up with both at the same time. The simple reason is that signing up for both gives you the best chance to get out on the road as soon as possible. It also lets you maximize the money you can make.
