Driving Uber or Lyft around the Independence Day holiday tends to be fairly lucrative. After all, the 4th of July is usually one of the better Uber or Lyft earning days of the year. However, don’t go out driving expecting New Year’s Eve type numbers.
Also, on the evening of the fourth, if your city has a big fireworks display downtown, be careful not to get caught in a massive traffic jam at the end. When events like those end, everyone leaves at once. This means there may be a substantial surge. However, if possible, try and meet the passenger at a point where you’ll be able to avoid the worst bottlenecks. That way you can maximize any surge. For really large 4th of July events, Uber and Lyft sometimes designate pickup and drop off points to make things easier.
Here’s what else to expect, and how to have a successful 4th of July if you choose to drive Uber or Lyft this holiday.
Drive Prepared – What To Have In Your Car
It’s pretty likely at least some of your pickups are going to be bringing food or drink to a friend’s house. After all, it’s the biggest barbecue day of the year. So, consider putting the following items in the car:
A beach or bath towel
Plastic bags
Clorox wipes
Paper towels
The above items are to help protect your vehicle. If someone has a hot dish, put a towel underneath it. The remaining items are just in case anything spills. Usually, nothing of this nature happens. But if it does, you’ll be really happy you have the above items close by. Again, it’s unlikely you’ll need the items above, but if you have them, you’ll be able to clean anything up, and get back on the road making money faster.
What To Expect – July 3rd
The day before the 4th should be steady, and should get busier as the day goes on. The morning rush hour won’t be super busy, as a lot of people tend to take the 3rd off. However, you should expect a good number of airport rides as people start leaving town.
Also, a fair number of Independence Day ceremonies often actually take place on the 3rd, so people will be going to those. It’s a good idea to google “4th of July events near me” to get an idea of where the largest events will be happening and at what times. Event times will usually be scattered throughout the day on the 3rd or the 4th. You can use these events to plan your driving schedule if you wish.
On the 3rd, the afternoon rush hour will likely start earlier than usual. People who go to work on the 3rd of July tend to duck out as early as they can. Expect things to start getting busier as the afternoon goes on. The evening should be very busy most places. People who stayed in town will likely be going out, as they many don’t have to go to work the next day.
Most places, the evening before the 4th of July will be similar to a Friday evening. People will be going to dinner, and then to bars later. Because of this, many veteran drivers actually skip driving in the morning on July 3rd. Instead, many will start around 2pm – 3pm and drive until the bars close.
What To Expect – July 4th
On Independence Day, expect to be driving people to their friends houses for barbecues. In the late morning, you may get a number of last minute supermarket runs. That’s when people usually realize they’re missing a key ingredient.
While there will be big events on the 3rd, most of the big ceremonies will likely be on July 4th. People going to these events often come in from the suburbs. If you know where the events are, and what time they start and end (check Google), you’ll know where to position yourself to catch the long rides to the suburbs and back. In downtown areas, parking is always a problem, and even more so when there are big events going on, so a lot of people will be requesting Lyft and Uber. These are likely to be the only long rides you get over the July 4th holiday. Instead, expect a bunch of quick hops that you’ll be able to get through efficiently because traffic will be relatively light.
If it’s a busy July 4th, you should see some a fair number of surges in the suburbs and the city. As always though, don’t chase the surge.
If you plan on driving Uber or Lyft all day on July 4th, a good strategy is to start around 10am – 11am, drive through the late afternoon, and then take a break for an hour or two. Then, go out again around 5pm – 6pm and drive until you feel like stopping or it stops being busy.
Overall, expect July 4th earnings to be comparable to a very busy weekend day. Traffic should be relatively light, and get busier in the later evening. As July 5th is a weekday, things will tend to quiet down after the evening fireworks are over. However, July 5th is also a Friday, so expect some people to stay out late on the 4th and just take the 5th off if they can.

People tend to drink a lot on the 4th. Unfortunately, some people are going to drink and then get in the driver’s seat. So, it’s important to scan the road ahead, and to always drive defensively.
Have a happy, safe and fun 4th of July holiday. And as always, drive profitably!

Their tax filing software may be a great option if you’re working for Uber, Doordash, Etsy, or another service, and you don’t want to pay $50 to $200 or more to file your taxes this year. Credit Karma launched their free tax software in 2016, but have improved it to the point that it now makes sense for most tax filing situations.
It currently offers most of the features of the big tax filing software players like Turbotax and H&R block, but with the added benefit of being free.
(Disclosure – We independently research our content to provide free advice for you. We may get compensation if you sign up with services, or purchase products through our affiliate links.)
What is Credit Karma Tax?
As noted above, it is the free tax filing software from Credit Karma, the free credit monitoring service with over 85 million users.
Credit Karma was founded in 2007 as a service providing free credit scores. In 2014, the company began offering full free credit reports to members as well, and is now the leading consumer credit monitoring service in the U.S.
While there are a number of free tax filing options out there, most of them are missing a lot of features, or aren’t totally free. Some will file your federal taxes for free, but charge you to file your state return. Other free tax filing options don’t work if you need to file a Schedule C or E form, a necessity for many Lyft, Uber, and Doordash drivers.
Is Credit Karma Tax free?
Yes, it is a totally free tax filing service. The service doesn’t even charge for filing a state tax return, audit defense, or having a small business.
The service also provides support for multi-member LLCs, S corporations, C corporations, partnerships, estates, and trusts!
Key Features
Free Audit Defense: Credit Karma Tax users will receive free audit defense. This service provides correspondence management and in-person representation in the event that a member gets audited by the IRS or the state. They are the only major tax filing software to offer audit defense for free.
Mobile Filing: Users can file their taxes, from start to finish, directly from their smartphone with every step now mobile enabled.
Easy Migration From TurboTax, TaxAct or H&R Block: New users can jumpstart their tax filing process by easily importing their prior year’s information
Error double-check: Before a member submits their tax return, Credit Karma Tax will check and re-check the return to let them know if anything looks off.
Personalized guidance: Once a member inputs their tax data, the app gives personalized guidance to help members maximize their refund, including helping them understand the impact of taking standard or itemized deduction and their filing status.
How Does Credit Karma Tax Make Money?
The software doesn’t actually make any money. In order to use it, you do need to join Credit Karma, a free credit monitoring service (disclosure: I’ve been using it for years). It’s been around since 2007, and helps you monitor your Transunion and Experian credit reports for free.
Credit Karma makes money by presenting loan and credit card offers to its users. When people sign up, Credit Karma gets some money from the loan or credit card company.
However, no advertising offers appear on the tax side of the software.
Pros And Cons Of Credit Karma Tax
Pros
Free Federal & State Filing
Free Audit Defense
Supports most tax situations including joint filing, and self employed schedule C filing.
Includes 1040 schedule C, 1040 schedule E, and 1040 schedule SE (self employment)
Cons – Does not support certain situations like:
Multi state tax return filings
Part-year state filing
Foreign earned income
State returns for married filing separately in community property states. Arizona, California, Idaho, Louisiana, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Washington, Wisconsin are community property states.
State filing only
Credit Karma Tax also has weaker help and support options when compared with TurboTax and H&R Block.
Credit Karma Tax – Getting Started Walkthrough
Getting started is pretty easy. First, sign up for Credit Karma (it’s free) by clicking the button below.
Once you’ve joined, you can start your tax return on their website or in the Credit Karma app.
1. To get started in the app, from the main dashboard, click on “Tax”.
2. This will bring you to the tax section of the app, which is free and has no ads. Click “continue”.
3.. The next step is to verify your phone number.
4. After that, you simply fill some info about yourself, and you can begin importing information and completing your Federal & State return. You can complete the entire process on the app, and since the software is free, you won’t even have to pull out your credit card.
How Does Credit Karma Tax compare to TurboTax and H&R Block?
Overall, it compares pretty well. While Turbotax does offer a free option, it only applies if your income is under $34,000, and their free option does not include Audit Defense.
H&R Block also has a free option, , but it does not support Schedule C forms, which most people who work for services like Postmates and Uber will need to fill out.
The only place Turbotax and H&R Block still have a major advantage is if your business or financial situation is really complicated.
If you own multiple businesses, or plan on filing multiple state returns, one of the paid offerings from Turbotax or H&R Block may be a better option. These options also come with superior customer support, with phone or chat options available.
Credit Karma Tax – Final Take
If you’re a gig economy worker for a service like Handy, Lyft, Care.com, or one of the other on demand services out there, Credit Karma Tax may be the free tax filing software you’ve been looking for.
It allows easy import from popular tax software, has most small business forms available, and is truly free in more tax situations than competing services.

Maven gig is a car rental option for rideshare or delivery drivers. It make the most sense for those who are looking to decrease out of pocket maintenance and fuel costs.
If you’re a Lyft or Uber driver (or both), or you deliver goods for Instacart, Postmates, or Doordash, you’re probably concerned about the wear and tear on your vehicle.
After all, when you drive rideshare or delivery, you do need to replace things like brakes, tires, and oil, more often than if you were just using your car for personal use.
Thankfully, these days you have a few car rental options that let you continue to earn money through services like Uber or Doordash, but without having to worry about a check engine light coming on, or how much tread is left on the tires.
Previously, we’ve looked at rideshare rental options like Fair.com and Lyft Express Drive, but today we’re looking at Maven Gig.
(Disclosure – We independently research our content to provide free advice for you. We may get compensation if you sign up with services, or purchase products through our affiliate links.)
What is Maven Gig?
Maven Gig lets you rent a car to use for all of your side gigs, whether it’s delivering for Postmates, driving Uber, or working for Handy. You get a vehicle that lets you earn money on your terms, with unlimited miles, maintenance and insurance included.
The service is offered by Maven, a subsidiary of General Motors. Some of you may remember the early Lyft and Uber competitor Sidecar. After Sidecar shut down in late 2015, GM hired some former Sidecar employees, and bought some of Sidecar’s assets, to form Maven.
Since then, Maven rideshare vehicles have covered over 250 million miles while delivering goods and people to the places they need to be.
“Maven remains committed to a mobility model that takes critical steps toward developing sustainable and livable cities, including launching peer-to-peer car sharing and deploying electric vehicles in high-mileage, shared-use applications.” – Alex Keros, Smart Cities Chief at GM Urban Mobility / Maven
In addition to Gig, Maven also offers two other car rental services.
Maven Car Sharing For Members – Offers hourly, daily, or monthly rental cars with gas and insurance, and dedicated Maven parking spots. (Sign up now to get 20% off your first rental.)
Maven Car Sharing For Owners – Lets vehicle owners rent out their cars. Owners get 60% of trip revenue and their vehicle is insured by Maven during the rental period
Once you’ve signed up for Maven (see the sign up process further down this page), it’s actually pretty simple.
1. Select your vehicle.
2. Reserve it. (Currently, you can only reserve for the same day, or the next business day)
3. At the time of your reservation, go to the pickup address, unlock the car using the Maven app, and drive away. Be sure to upload your Maven vehicle and insurance information to Lyft, Uber, or whichever service you’ll be working for, before you pick up your vehicle. It often takes a few hours for gig economy services to approve a new vehicle.
How do I pay for Maven?
When you make your reservation, Maven will put a $250 authorization hold on your credit card. Within 24 hours of picking up your car, the exact reservation amount will be taken from those held funds.
If your reservation is less than $250, Maven will release the outstanding amount back to you. If it ends up being more than $250, you will see an additional charge for the remaining funds.
Maven bills weekly, so your billing date will be the day of the week you started your reservation. So, if you start your reservation on a Tuesday, you will be charged every week on Tuesday.
How Do I Link Maven to Lyft, Uber, Doordash etc…?
After you reserve your vehicle, Maven will provide you with a Certificate of Insurance with your name, and vehicle VIN details, so you can upload it to various ridesharing driver or delivery platforms.
Where do I find my Maven certificate of insurance?
Open your Maven App and click “More” in the bottom right corner. You’ll see the Certificate of Insurance link where you can view the COI.
How To Get Approved For Maven Gig?
The Maven sign up and application process is pretty simple. Download the Maven Car Sharing app from the App Store, Google Play, or from the Maven website, and follow these instructions.
1. Select your driving country.
2. Click on “Drive to earn with ride sharing and delivery services”.
3. Select your Maven Rideshare market.
4. Accept Maven’s terms and conditions.
5. Enter your name, phone, address, and driver’s license information.
6. Wait for approval. Maven says this can take up to two days, but generally it takes less than an hour.
How old do you need to be to rent from Maven?
To rent from Maven Gig, you must be 21 years or older. However, if you’re in NYC, you only need to be 19 years or older, but you will also need to have a valid TLC license.
Besides that, you’ll just need a Valid credit or debit card.
How Much Are Maven Rentals?
Maven rideshare rentals rates start at $199 for compacts, sedans, and crossover suvs, and at $229 for the Chevy EV Bolt. However, certain markets may be slightly more expensive. You can select from a variety of GM vehicles including the Chevy Cruze and Colorado.
The Chevy Equinox, which qualifies for Lyft XL and Uber XL, is also available.
The minimum rental time is 6 days and the maximum time is 28 days (35 in California). Standard rental vehicle terms are for 28 or 35 days, but you can return the car after the first week without penalty.
If you are renting a Maven vehicle to drive rideshare or delivery, your full rental cost is a tax-deductible business expense.
What states and cities are Maven Gig rideshare rentals available in?
You can rent a Maven vehicle for gig work in:
Austin
Baltimore
Boston
Detroit
Los Angeles
Phoenix
San Diego
San Francisco
Washington, D.C.
How does Maven compare to services like HyreCar, Fair, and Lyft Express Drive?
Overall, the rental rates are comparable. Similar to renting with HyreCar and Fair, renting with Maven doesn’t lock you into driving for one particular service (on Lyft Express Drive, you can only Drive With Lyft).
However, with Maven you get access to GM’s OnStar network, and to the Chevy EV Bolt.
Driving with a Chevy Bolt on Maven also gives you access to the EVgo charging network for free vehicle charging. In 2018, Maven contracted with EVgo to build a dedicated network of fast charging stations exclusively for Maven Chevy Bolt drivers.
With this arrangement, not only do Chevy Bolt EV drivers on Maven not have to pay for gas, they don’t even have to pay for the electricity to charge the vehicle.
Click here to find your nearest EVgo charging location. Maven also has existing partnerships with Deliv, Grubhub, HopSkipJump, and Roadie.
What is Maven’s phone number?
Maven doesn’t force you to use email or a chat app. To reach Maven customer service, simply call 1-844-HIMAVEN (1-844-446-2836).
Is Maven a good rental option for Uber, Lyft or Postmates drivers?
It depends. If you’re a Lyft driver, but you only drive 10 to 15 hours a week, it probably doesn’t make sense to rent a car from Maven. On the other hand, if you drive 30 hours a week or more total (for Lyft, or for a bunch of services together), Maven is a great option.
So, if you drive full time for your side hustles and you’re in one of the cities where Maven is available, then it’s certainly an option you should consider strongly.
Maven’s Big Advantage Over Hyrecar, Fair, and Express Drive
While Maven’s rates are comparable to other rideshare rental services like Hyrecar or Fair, renting with Maven can give you access to an electric vehicle and free charging. This alone is worth picking Maven over some of the alternatives, as it amounts to free gas.
Another advantage of Maven versus Fair or Hyrecar is the keyless pickup. With Hyrecar, you’re picking up from an individual, which means setting a pickup time, and going to meet the person. If you rent from Fair.com, you usually have to go to a dealer, speak to someone there, and then pick up your car.
With Maven, you show up, unlock the car with the Maven app, and hit the road.
So, if you’re already driving full time for Lyft, Doordash or a combination of services, a Maven rental could be a great option.
Don’t take our word for it, check out the Maven app, where you can browse available vehicles, reserve a tax-deductible rental, or even rent out your own vehicle when you’re not using it.

According to a number of recent studies, the gig economy has evolved in a wide variety of interesting ways over the last few years. This is including a few which likely could not have been predicted at the start. As of 2018 about 34% of gig economy participants in the United States were full time. A full 84% of them are doing so exclusively. That number equals about 47.8 million people in the United States alone.
In a traditional employee and employer relationship, an employer will withhold taxes from every paycheck for their employees. They will also make contributions to Social Security as well. When someone participates in the gig economy, this doesn’t happen. The worker is responsible for all tax-related matters, including various self employment tax and withholding requirements.
Want to file your Federal and State taxes for free?
Recently, the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration issued a report about the importance of self employment taxes as outlined by the IRS. The IRS has an Automated Underreporter system, also known as the AUR, designed to help identify participants in the gig economy with discrepancies. It is designed to look at what they report on their income tax returns and what payments they actually received throughout the year on various 1099-K forms.
In an examination of the tax years 2012 through 2015, the report identified more than 264,000 different cases with potentially underreported payments. The data revealed that this was actually a problem that was getting worse over time. Underreporting increased a staggering 237% over the course of those four years.
While the program identified 264,000 discrepancies, nearly 59% were not moved through the system for further analysis. This was due to the sheer volume of potential issues that were being examined. The remaining 2,800 people who had potentially underreported their income for all four of those years. That total represents about $2.7 billion in underreported payments alone.
Source: Treasury.gov
A large part of this has to do with how payments are handled in the gig economy. If a gig economy worker is paid via PayPal, they must receive over $20,000 in a single calendar year AND do so via 200 or more transactions. If they don’t meet or exceed both of those thresholds, PayPal doesn’t issue a 1099-K. This means that their income isn’t being reported to the IRS at all.
According to that TIGTA report, whenever income is not reported to the IRS, taxpayers are far more likely to be noncompliant. This is true both accidentally and intentionally. The first scenario could still land someone in hot water by way of late fees and other penalties. The second is actually criminalized and is punishable by up to five years in a federal penitentiary for prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
It’s true that the IRS has no intention of jailing over 40% of the United States workforce. But at the same time, they want their money.
The Treasury Inspector General made a series of recommendations to the IRS about how to best handle this issue moving forward. One of the biggest involved the development of a strategic plan to address tax administration for the gig economy. That plan should also create increased visibility into the collection and assessment of self employment tax as well. A soft notice program was also recommended, aimed at gig economy workers with repeated noncompliance issues.
TIGTA also recommended a significant expansion of the AUR program to account for a wider array of taxpayer situations. This was including those who have a long history of high-dollar discrepancies. The IRS disagreed with this recommendation. Officials said that their current system was fine and that adding more scenarios would ultimately add minimal value to what it was already doing.
11 recommendations were provided throughout the report and the IRS agreed with all but two of them. This was interpreted to mean that as an organization they are aware that this is an issue and they’re searching for opportunities to do something about it moving forward.
Best Practices for Gig Economy Workers
All of this means that the IRS is absolutely going to pay closer attention to gig economy workers over the next few years in particular. Most people operating under this system will have absolutely nothing to worry about, even if accidental discrepancies are identified. For the best results, gig economy workers need to:
Don’t try to do your taxes on your own if you are not capable of doing them properly.
Stay on top of quarterly estimated tax payments to avoid getting hit with a large tax bill at the end of the year.
Don’t forget about the self employment tax, which is an additional 15.3% tax on top of the income taxes you already owe.
These best practices will help make sure that gig economy workers have nothing to worry about. This is true even in the event of an IRS audit. They’ll be less likely to make mistakes in the first place. They can also prove that any that did occur were unintentional.

Minneapolis is the 16th largest metropolitan area in the United States. Consisting of some 3.6 million residents, the Twin Cities Metro is not only the economic hub of Minnesota but is one of the largest economic centers in the Midwest. Since the introduction of Uber and Lyft to the region in 2012, rideshare has been a mainstay of the Minneapolis scene.
However, with the average spent on Lyft and Uber in Minneapolis at $34 per month, compared to $56 in Atlanta and $84 in New York, it is important to know where and when to drive if you want to drive profitably. The difference in where and when you start driving can be the difference between a busy night and a low fares outing.
Looking for A Job That Causes Less Wear And Tear On Your Car?
Minneapolis has worked hard to be accommodating to Lyft and Uber. Per Minnesota Public Radio, in 2018 there were more than 5,000 Uber and Lyft drivers cleared to serve the Minneapolis-Saint Paul Airport, compared to just 600 taxis. This willingness to embrace ridesharing gives drivers advantages in pick-ups, particularly downtown.
On weekend nights, for example, 1st and Hennepin Avenues between 3rd and 6th Streets are closed to regular traffic. Rideshare drivers can enter the area at 6th and 1st and 6th and Hennepin. It is important that the vehicle is wearing its proper trade dress on both the front and back windshields.
During daylight hours, the best places to drive are downtown, Dinkytown, and Bloomington.
Downtown: The heart of the Minneapolis business scene, it goes without saying that transporting work commuters can be lucrative. Popular spots include Target Center, Hennepin Avenue, the Metro Transit stations, Nicollet Mall, the Hennepin County office complex.
Parking and traffic can be challenging, particularly during rush hour. When driving downtown during prime hours, it is important to set aside enough time to handle the traffic or to learn how to navigate alternative routes.
Dinkytown: Dinkytown is populated by University of Minnesota students and recent alumni. North of the University of Minnesota Twin Cities East Bank campus, Dinkytown is usually buzzing in the day with both students traveling to and from class and tourists.
Al’s Breakfast, arguably the smallest restaurant in the state, and the Loring Pasta Bar—which is in the building where Bob Dylan lived—are all in the neighborhood. During the University of Minnesota football season, weekend demand to and from Dinkytown is a must for rideshare drivers.
Bloomington: While technically not part of Minneapolis, the affluent suburb of Bloomington is home to the Best Buy, HealthPartners, Toro, and Ceridian corporate offices, the Mall of America, and the Minneapolis-Saint Paul Airport. As Bloomington is a large city in its own right—the fifth largest in the state—it is advisable to choose a spot, such as the airport, to work instead of roaming. The airport uses a “first-in, first-out” system, meaning that drivers need to enter a designated waiting area in the “FIFO zone” to receive priority queuing for airport passengers.
Bde Maka Ska: Formerly Lake Calhoun, Bde Maka Ska is the largest lake in Minneapolis. Surrounded by city parks and walking trails, the lake is a popular destination year-round.
Bde Maka Ska Lake
At night, the best spots are:
Target Field, Target Center, Xcel Energy Center, and U.S. Bank Stadium: Minneapolis is a city for hardcore sports fans. Whether it’s the Vikings, the Timberwolves, the Twins, or the Lynx, Minneapolis has a professional team for everyone. It is important for rideshare drivers to know the game schedules for all four stadiums in order to maximize pickups.
Uptown: The hub of young professional and hipster life in the city, Uptown is the place to be for the 18- to 35-year-old demographic. Popular spots are Calhoun Square, Cowboy Slim’s, Stella’s Fish Café, Sushi Tango, the VFW Post, and the Green Mill.
Dinkytown: The college students will want to go out and party. Safe bets are the Varsity, Fraternity Row, and 14 Avenue SE.
Downtown/Hennepin Avenue: Home of the Saloon, the Orpheum theater, First Avenue, and the Butcher & the Boar, driving Hennepin at night can be challenging, but rewarding.
Warehouse District: The home of Target Field, the Warehouse District is full of coffeehouse, museums, restaurants, and boutiques. Popular spots are the Fulton Brewing Taproom, Gay 90’s, Cowboy Jack’s, the Pourhouse, and Bar La Grassa.
It should be noted that not every neighborhood/area will be busy all the time. Especially during the winter, a driver may find more fares in the residential neighborhoods than staking out the commercial ones. Good residential areas to try are Lyn-Lake, CARAG, and Northeast Minneapolis.
When to Drive
The best time to drive depends on the area:
Bloomington: 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Friday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. weekends for the Minneapolis-Saint Paul Airport, and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day for the Mall of America.
Downtown: 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and midnight to 3 a.m. Monday through Friday, 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. Two hours before and after performances at the Orpheum and First Avenue, and two hours before and after events at Target Field, Target Center, and the Xcel Energy Center.
Warehouse District: 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. every day.
Dinkytown: 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. Monday through Saturday.
The Metro Transit Stations (Target field, MSP, Mall of America): 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day.
Uptown: 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. Monday through Saturday.
For a full-time driver, a good strategy is to start with the downtown commutes and work toward the airport.
The airport is busiest Tuesday through Thursday, with peak times at 7 a.m., 9 a.m., 1 p.m., 5 p.m., and 7 p.m.
It is typically better to drive rideshare on weekends than weekdays, but if a driver is willing to show some flexibility, it is possible to keep your queue full. It is important that, before you drive, you are familiar with the city and are comfortable navigating without a map.
Uber vs. Lyft In Minneapolis
Uber and Lyft both appeared in Minneapolis roughly at the same time. Both offer various bonuses and incentives for new and existing drivers. As a driver, you tend to wind up favoring one or the other. However, many Minneapolis drivers sign up for both Lyft and Uber and alternate sign-ins based on current rates.

Uber Car Requirements 2019 – Does Your Vehicle Meet the Requirements?
Whether you want to work full- or part-time, becoming a rideshare driver offers plenty of opportunities to boost your income. Uber is the most popular choice for those entering the rideshare industry for the first time, but the company does have a variety of criteria that must be met. While your initial focus may be on qualifying as a driver, you’ll also need to utilize a vehicle that meets Uber’s car requirements. Below is everything you need to know about passing the rideshare company’s vehicle inspection process.
Uber Car Requirements: The Basics
The two most important focuses of the driver application process are Uber driver requirements and vehicle requirements. To drive for the rideshare company, you need to meet the criteria of both aspects. Here’s a closer look at each:
Basic Uber Driver Requirements
Before you can join the Uber fleet, you need to ensure that you qualify as a driver. The rideshare company has a few basic requirements that all applicants must meet:
Age: Must be at least 21
Experience: One year of driving experience for individuals over 23 or three years for anyone under 23
License: Must have a valid, up-to-date driver’s license
Background: No violent crime convictions
Uber completes a thorough background check to review each applicant’s criminal and driving history. Any more than three tickets within the last three years will cause the system to reject your application. Drivers must also be present on the vehicle’s insurance policy.
Basic Uber Vehicle Requirements
Once you’re sure you meet the basic driver criteria, you can turn your attention to Uber’s vehicle requirements. You’ll need to provide proof of registration, but you don’t have to be the owner of the car to drive it. Here are the basic checkpoints:
Seats: Fits at least four passengers with seatbelts
Insurance: Must meet the state’s liability insurance coverage requirement
Inspection: Must pass the company’s inspection checklist
The rideshare company doesn’t accept rebuilt vehicles or those with salvage titles. The car, SUV, or minivan must also be in excellent condition and free of any major cosmetic damage.
State & City Uber Requirements
Uber’s company-wide requirements aren’t the only criteria—you also need to meet the driver and vehicle requirements of local and state governments. Many municipalities have put their own laws in place that govern who can and can’t legally provide rideshare services in the area. For instance, a vehicle age restriction of 10 years is common in many cities, which is five years less than the company’s rule. As a result, it’s important that you verify your location’s unique requirements before applying to become an Uber driver.
A Breakdown of Uber Vehicle Requirements
There are a few different ride styles available with Uber. Each level is associated with stricter requirements as well as higher fare. If you qualify for one of the more luxury-focused categories, you can end up earning a substantial amount more per ride than the basic options. Here’s a closer look at each level and the associated requirements:
UberX
The most basic ride style is UberX, which offers a no-frills, comfortable, and safe journey. You’ll need to meet all the basic Uber car requirements listed above. If you qualify for UberX, you can also drive for UberPOOL. Some of the most common car examples include the Ford Focus, Honda Civic, and Toyota Camry.
Uber Comfort
Uber Comfort offers a newer mid-size vehicle with guaranteed legroom. You’ll need a car less than five years old, in good condition, with extra legroom. Check out our Uber Comfort guide for a list of vehicles that qualify.
UberXL
UberXL is a larger version of the UberX with a focus on affordability and convenience. To qualify for UberXL rides, your vehicle needs to accommodate the needs of at least six passengers (seven seats total). The higher occupancy level of UberXL means drivers make more per trip. The Ford Explorer and Dodge Caravan are two of the most popular vehicles in this category.
UberSELECT
UberSELECT is a step up in luxury from UberX. To meet the Uber car requirements for this option, the vehicle needs to fit four passengers, offer four-doors, and have a leather interior. It must also be under 10 years old. Lexus LX and Cadillac CTS are two common examples of UberSELECT vehicles. Check out our Uber Select driver guide for more information on Uber Select vehicles.
UberSUV
UberSUVs offer the size capabilities of UberXL but with the luxury of a high-end appearance. While there are location variables, typically UberSUVs need to be five years old or newer, offer a black interior and exterior, and have a capacity for six riders. For this category, you’ll see quite a few luxury SUVs, like the Lincoln Navigator and Cadillac Escalade. There are also higher driver restrictions, which usually require commercial driver registration and experience.
UberBLACK
UberBLACK is the rideshare version of a traditional black car service. This category features only high-end vehicles in excellent condition to create the luxurious atmosphere riders desire. While this ride option typically utilizes sedans of high-end brands, like Mercedes, SUVs also qualify. However, all vehicles must be newer than five years and offer black-on-black attributes (black interior and exterior). As with UberSUV, drivers must be registered for commercial driving services.
UberLUX
UberLUX is the epitome of class and luxury, and it also pays the highest fares. The Uber vehicle requirements are incredibly strict for this style of ride, so it’s much harder to qualify. As with UberBLACK and UberSUV, all UberLUX vehicles must offer a black-on-black finish along with an excellent interior and exterior condition. Top-quality Audis, Porsches, and BMWs are common, but they must be under five years of age.
Don’t Meet Uber’s Car Requirements? Here Are Your Options
If you don’t meet the minimum vehicle requirements, don’t give up your dream of driving just yet. There are two alternative options available: rent an Uber vehicle or opt for a delivery service.
Rent an Uber Vehicle
To accommodate the needs of more individuals, Uber has partnered with three companies to allow drivers to rent a vehicle for the purpose of rideshare. It’s a fairly new program, but it’s an excellent move because it opens up the market to more contractors. The three Uber car rental options available include:
Getaround: Designed for short-term rentals
Hertz: Offering weekly rentals
Fair: Affordable and flexible leases for Uber, and other rideshare and delivery services.
These partnerships make it easier for drivers to start making money, even if their current vehicle doesn’t meet the minimum Uber car requirements. Unfortunately, the services are only currently available in certain markets. If you live in a major metropolitan area, then it’s likely a solid choice. However, drivers in smaller cities or rural locations will have to wait until the service expands because Uber only accepts drivers with rentals from approved companies.
Delivery Driver Services
If you don’t want to rent a vehicle, you also have other on-the-road options outside of rideshare. UberEats is the company’s food delivery service, which has fewer restrictions on vehicles. For car delivery, they accept vehicles made after 1998, and it only has to have two doors. You can also make Uber deliveries with scooters and bikes.
There are also a plethora of other delivery options. Caviar and Doordash are top recommendations because of their popularity and wide customer base. Instacart is another up-and-coming service, but instead of restaurants, it focuses on grocery shopping and delivery. Each of these options is accompanied by their own requirements, but since passengers aren’t involved, most of the companies are more lenient on vehicle condition and age.
What to Expect at the Uber Vehicle Inspection
All Uber vehicles have to undergo a 19-point inspection before they’re given the all-clear. Once your application is approved, Uber will send you information outlining partnering auto shops in your area where you can schedule the service for free. Here’s what the technician looks for during the inspection:
Windshield – general condition and wiper functionality
Functioning seatbelts
Doors – working condition and locks
Horn
Bumpers – presence and condition
Exhaust system
Tires – tread and signs of damage
Each inspection is only good for 12 months, so you’ll need to complete the task again in one year. If there aren’t any partnering auto shops in the area, you can choose any shop that’s approved to provide state vehicle inspections. In such a situation, you will have to pay out-of-pocket for the service. You’ll also need to provide the technician with the correct paperwork and have them submit it to the company.

Lyft Car Requirements For Every U.S. Market
When it comes to your vehicle, in most places, if your car is less than 15 years old, it should meet the Lyft vehicle requirements for your state or market. This is quite a change from a few years ago. It used to be that you needed a car that was less than 8 years old to drive with Lyft in most places. In some cities, the Lyft vehicle requirements specified a vehicle that was a maximum of 5 years old!
Lyft loosened their vehicle requirements in 2016 to allow older vehicles onto the system. Since the average age of a car in the United States is 11.8 years, this opened up the Lyft platform to a lot more available vehicles and helped spur their incredible 2017 growth spurt.
Lyft currently offers five different vehicle types to riders: Lyft (regular sedans), Lyft XL (7 seats+), Lyft Lux (fancier), Lyft Lux Black (fanciest), and Lyft Lux Black XL (fanciest suvs).
To qualify for Lyft or Lyft XL in most places, you’ll need a 2004 or newer vehicle. The other vehicle types are part of Lyft’s premium services. The Lyft vehicle requirements for premium vehicles are more stringent, and now require at least a 2011 or newer vehicle. In many states, regardless of your vehicle’s age, you’ll need to pass a vehicle inspection to make sure the car is in good condition.
The Lyft vehicle requirements for all services were last updated by Lyft at the end of June, 2018. Lyft only updates vehicle requirements once a year. So, if your vehicle is a 2004 model, in most Lyft markets, you’ll be able to drive that car for at least a year on the Lyft system. In June, 2019, though, the Lyft markets that require a 2004 vehicle will likely switch to require a 2004 vehicle instead.
Further down this page, we cover the specific Lyft car requirements for Lyft XL, Lyft Lux, Lyft Lux Black, and Lyft Lux Black XL. Then, we briefly go over the Lyft vehicle condition, Lyft inspection (including where to get your Lyft vehicle inspection), and Lyft driver requirements.

Lyft has five different vehicle services. Recently, Lyft released a new rider app in which they renamed some of their service offerings. For example, Lyft Plus (vehicles that can seat seven people total) is now called Lyft XL.
Lyft Vehicle Age Requirements
Lyft has recently changed the vehicle age requirements for all of their Premium service lines (Lyft Lux, Lyft Lux Black, and Lyft Lux Black XL). Always pay close attention to Lyft’s vehicle age requirements. In many cities, if you have a 2004 model year car, it will currently qualify for Lyft. But it probably won’t next year.
Here’s the current lineup of the different Lyft services and the vehicles that qualify.
Regular Lyft Service Lines
Lyft – This is the basic Lyft service, which includes Lyft shared rides. If your vehicle has 5 seat belts, four doors (no jump doors), and meets the Lyft vehicle age requirements for your market, you can use it to drive with Lyft. However, taxis and other commercial vehicles will not qualify.
Lyft XL (formerly Lyft Plus) – Lyft XL provides vehicles that can seat 7 passengers or more (including the driver). If your vehicle meets Lyft’s vehicle requirements and has 7 or more seats, you will also be able to accept Lyft XL rides. Large passenger vans that seat 12-20 people will not qualify for Lyft.
Premium Lyft Service Lines
Lyft Lux (formerly Lyft Premier) – To qualify for Lyft Lux, you’ll need a relatively new, high-end vehicle (2012 – 2016 or newer). Typical vehicles include BMW, Mercedes, and Lexus. See below for the full Lyft Lux vehicle list.
Lyft Lux Black – To qualify for Lyft Lux Black, you’ll need a very new luxury vehicle (2014 or newer 2016 or 2018 in some markets). The car must have a black exterior, and a leather or faux-leather interior. See below for the full Lyft Lux Black vehicle list.
Lyft Lux Black XL – If your vehicle qualifes for Lyft Lux Black, and has 7 or more seat belts, you will also be able to accept Lyft Lux Black XL rides. These are some of the most lucrative rides in the Lyft universe.
Lyft XL Vehicle Requirements
If you want to drive Lyft XL and your vehicle qualifies for regular Lyft, the only additional requirement is that your car has seven seat belts total, six for passengers and one for the driver.
Once you’re approved to drive, if your vehicle has seven seat belts, you should automatically be able to accept Lyft XL rides. If you’re not, you’ll definitely want to contact Lyft and let them know your vehicle qualifies for Lyft XL. Lyft XL rates are often 50% – 100% higher than regular Lyft rates.
Lyft Lux Vehicle Requirements (Models and Age)
With the introduction of the new Lyft rider app, Lyft has also changed the age requirements for Lyft Lux (formerly Lyft Premiere) vehicles. As recently as June of 2018, you could qualify for Lyft Lux with a 2009 vehicle. Now, you’ll need at least a 2012 or newer vehicle in most cases. In a few cases, you’ll need a 2016 or newer vehicle to qualify for Lyft Lux.
Lyft Lux is currently available in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, San Francisco, Silicon Valley. It has also begun rolling out in Washington, DC, New Jersey, Dallas, Boston, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Las Vegas, Denver, Phoenix, San Diego, Orange County, Seattle, Baltimore, Detroit, Miami, and Minneapolis.
This list comes directly from Lyft. If your car isn’t on the list, it will not qualify for Lyft Lux.
Lyft Lux Black Vehicle Requirements (Models and Age)
The Lyft Lux Black vehicle requirements are incredibly strict. The vehicle must have a black exterior in excellent condition. In addition, it must a have a leather, or leather like interior. In general, Lyft Lux Black and Black XL require a new luxury vehicle in absolutely pristine condition.
The reason the vehicle requirements are so strict is that Lyft Lux Black and Lyft Lux Black SUV fares are often 100% – 175% higher than regular Lyft or Lyft XL fares. Most users of Lyft Lux Black are usually high level executives, and people going out for a special occasion or a night on the town. If a rider is paying that much, they are expecting a great car and a professional experience.
This list comes directly from Lyft. If your car isn’t on the list, it will not qualify for Lyft Lux Black.
2018 Or Newer
Ford – Expedition
2017 Or Newer
Land Rover – Discovery
Lincoln – Continental
2014 Or Newer
Acura – MDX, RLX
Audi – A6, A7, A8, Q7, RS7, S6, S7, S8

Lyft Lux Black XL Vehicle Requirements (Models and Age)
If it qualifies for Lyft Lux Black and has seven seat belts, it qualifies for Lyft Lux Black XL
Lyft Vehicle Condition Requirements
All vehicles on the Lyft platform must have at least 4 doors and 5 seat belts. Cars with jump doors (many 4 door pickups) will not qualify for Lyft. All exterior lights must be working, including turn signals, brake lights, reverse lights, and headlights. Both high beams and low beams must work.
Besides the above requirements, the vehicle has to be in good condition, and good working order. So, all the doors, windows, and major equipment have to work, and the car shouldn’t have any major cosmetic damage.
How does Lyft define major cosmetic damage? Generally, if your car has a few scratches or minor dings, you should be approved. This is espeically true if you live in a state that doesn’t require an inspection. In those states, you will have to send Lyft pictures of your car from all sides. If the damage isn’t noticeable in the photo, it won’t be a problem. However, if you have noticeable damage like a big dent in the door, or part of your bumper is hanging off, you won’t be approved.
If you live in a state that requires an inspection, approval often comes down to the inspector. They usually don’t car about minor dings. But if your windshield had a crack (even a small one), you probably won’t pass.
While not all states require a vehicle inspection to drive with Lyft, it’s important that your car is in pretty good condition anyway. The reason is that vehicle condition can often affect ratings and tips. If your vehicle has squeaky breaks, worn out seats, or suspension issues, riders will notice.
The Lyft Vehicle Inspection
In many states and cities, you’ll need to pass a vehicle inspection to drive with Lyft. See your state information above to see if you’ll need to get an inspection, and to download the Lyft inspection form for your market. You generally must use the Lyft inspection form, not a generic inspection form, or the Uber vehicle inspection form.
The vehicle inspection is a one page form you’ll give to a licensed mechanic in your state. They’ll fill it out, and if you pass, you’ll upload the completed form to your Lyft dashboard. The inspection usually costs about $20 and you can have it done at Jiffy Lube, Pep Boys, or another licensed mechanic. In some markets, you can have the inspection completed at a Lyft hub, sometimes for free.
What gets checked during the Lyft vehicle inspection?
Here’s a list of what the inspector will look at during the inspection.
The basic Lyft driver requirements are as follows.
You have to be 21 years old and have had a driver’s license for at least 1 year. (In some cities, your license may need to be from the state in which you’ll be driving).
You must be able to pass a criminal background check and driving background check.
You must have in state personal auto insurance (you must be listed as a driver on the policy) for the vehicle you will be using.
You must have a relatively clean driving record. (No DUI’s or reckless driving and very few moving violations over the last few years.)

Almost all drivers earn more during their second 100 rides, than the first 100.
Besides the cities listed above, there are plenty of other great Uber and Lyft markets around the U.S. While overall earnings may not be quite as high in other markets, it’s important to keep in mind that most cities have a lower cost of living than the cities listed above.
San Francisco, along with New York city, are the highest earning markets in the country. However, it’s very difficult to be approved and get insured to drive Lyft or Uber in New York City. Suffice to say, if you sign up and get approved in N.Y.C., you should definitely earn over $20 per hour.
