Lyft’s purchase of Motivate positions the company well for the future:

  • Existing Bikeshare Infrastructure: Lyft’s buyout of Motivate comes with contracts and relationships already in place in major cities across the U.S. Rather than battling the competition of other transportation outlets, Lyft is now partnering with them to give you more options.

Now, About Those Scooters

In San Francsico, Lyft is one of several companies that have applied to operate motorized scooter rentals. Tentatively, the new venture is called Lyft Bikes.

Lyft Bikes and (potentially) scooters create an alternative to walking or enlarging the carbon-footprint with more vehicles.

The advantage to consumers is obvious, but some argue the scooters are more hassle than they’re worth. After San Francisco became littered with scooters left on street corners and sidewalks, the city instituted permitting requirements.

The city says it will decide soon which of twelve companies will be granted the permits. Each will operate 250 scooters under a 12-month trial program.

Lyft is vying against Uber, Spin, LimeBike, Bird, Razor, Scoot, Ofo, Skip, CycleHop, Ridecell, and USScooter for a permit. City leaders say after six months under the pilot, they’ll reevaluate and consider doubling the number of e-scooters available.

Lyft’s San Francisco scooter pilot program would serve as a launch pad to put scooters in other cities.

While the recent Lyft app refresh makes it easier for those hoping to share their commute with another passenger or get to their destination faster, more options could be on the horizon. Bike and scooter sharing could soon mean anytime you want to leave your home but don’t want to walk, you’ll be able to use Lyft to get to your destination.

The Lyft rider app highlights the importance and demand for shared ride availability, working in tandem with public transportation platforms, and speed of service. To determine the winner in the Uber vs. Lyft battle, compare the two applications side-by-side to identify the pros and cons of each. Some of the main points you need to consider before choosing your go-to rideshare service include:

Every person will value these categories differently, but a close comparison is necessary to find the right one for your needs. Here are how the two apps measure up:

Availability

Before you can decide between the two services, you need to determine if they’re both actually available in your area. Currently, Uber operates in more than 600 cities around the world, and this number is rapidly expanding. Lyft, on the other hand, is now available in all 50 states plus the District of Columbia. Outside of the U.S., the rideshare service has recently expanded to Canada, and is eyeing Europe.

Safety

Safety is a top concern for most rideshare passengers, and in the battle of Uber vs. Lyft, security is a close race. Even though rideshare drivers operate as independent contractors, both companies utilize a detailed vetting process. In highly congested areas, the app designates pickup and drop off sites on surrounding side streets when available. This feature is designed to reduce the risk of pedestrians and Lyft vehicles being hit by passing traffic. If an incident occurs, both companies have teams designated for urgent issues, and each one is available 24 hours a day.

Winner: It’s a tie! While Uber does have the upper hand with their built-in emergency service response, both companies have made a solid effort to keep their passengers safe.

Usability

Requesting a ride shouldn’t be a pain, which brings us to our next round in the Uber vs. Lyft battle—usability. Both rideshare companies make it fairly easy to secure transportation, requiring only a few taps on your screen.

  • UberBLACK: Choose drivers with super high-end vehicles for up to four people.
  • UberSUV: UberBLACK with more seating.
  • UberLUX: Top-of-the-line vehicles with top-rated, professional drivers.

The biggest difference between the two apps, at least in terms of ride choices, is their offerings for individuals with disabilities. Uber offers two important options that are available directly from the app—UberWav and UberAssist. UberWav is designed for individuals who have non-foldable riding or walking apparatuses, like electric scooters, but this option has an additional $2 fee. UberAssist, on the other hand, specializes in passengers with folding wheelchairs and walkers, as the driver will assist with folding down and storing the device at pick-up. Unfortunately, neither of these variations are available in all locations as of yet, but they are quickly expanding their coverage areas.

How does Uber work? This is the question every first-time passenger needs answered. While seasoned riders can’t imagine a world without the service, approaching the process for the first time can be overwhelming. Fortunately, we’ve outlined everything you need to know about using Uber below.

How Does Uber Work?

Uber is a rideshare service, which means that the company more or less serves as the go-between for passengers and drivers. However, they aren’t completely hands-off. While Uber drivers are independent contractors, the company still runs a driving record and criminal background check to ensure the safety of their clients. Uber also sets standards for the types of vehicles used, so you’re sure to get where you’re going without any issues.

If you’ve never used Uber before, here are the steps you need to follow.

Set Up Your Uber Account

The absolute first thing you need to do is set up your account. Click HERE to sign up with Uber and get a discount on your first few rides. Then fill in your name, phone number, and email on the following screen. If the promo code box is empty, simply enter i9tz1 to get your discount. Once you click sign up, Uber will prompt you to install the app. Upon completion, open the app and you’ll see the sign-in menu. At the bottom of the screen, there’s a spot to enter your phone number. Before you can request your first ride, you need to add your payment information. Open the main menu within your app by pressing the three lines in the upper left hand corner.

Uber also integrates with Apple Pay You can also scan your credit card directly from your phone’s camera. The payment screen is also where you enter any promo codes you may receive in the future.

The company does offer cash payment options in certain cities, but you’ll still need a credit option on file. To pay with cash, you’ll swipe up from the bottom of the screen (inside the app) directly after requesting your ride. You’ll see a section for payment options, which you should click, and then choose “Cash.”

Schedule Your First Uber Ride

Now that you’ve set up all of the necessary information, you should get excited, because the answer to “How does Uber work?” will finally be revealed! First, you need to open the app and verify your pickup location. The app will automatically identify your current position using GPS, so you need to make sure that that’s where you want your driver to stop. If it’s not, you can move your pin to the desired spot.

  • UberXL: UberXL is essentially UberX but with more room. This rideshare option allows you to book a vehicle when you have more than four passengers.
  • UberSUV: UberSUV is the higher-end version of UberXL. You’re likely to end up with higher end vehicle models, like an Escalade or a Navigator.
  • UberSELECT: UberSELECT is a more luxurious version of UberX, offering higher end brands like BMW and Cadillac. With this option, you can fit up to four riders.
  • UberBLACK: If you want to make an entrance, then UberBLACK is the right option for you. Following the rules of more traditional black car services, this option utilizes top of the line, new sedans with professional drivers.
  • UberLUX: UberLUX is the epitome of luxury, fitted with professional drivers and top-notch vehicle brands, like Mercedes and Porsche. It’s also the most expensive option.

Compared to other forms of transportation, UberPOOL is extremely convenient. You can order a ride at the click of a button instead of waiting for a scheduled train or bus. Plus, you’re still picked up and dropped off at your desired location, so you won’t have to walk to get to your destination.

Con: Journey Time

While the process is convenient, Uber Pool trips will take longer than other rideshare options. The slight detours involved to pick up multiple passengers as well as the waiting period for each person to arrive increases the overall journey time.
