As customers increasingly demand faster delivery, retailers, restaurants, and couriers need to work to maximize the efficiency of last-mile delivery and to provide convenient options in order to stay relevant. This article outlines some of the trends shaping the delivery industry both today and into the future.
eCommerce and the World of Deliveries
The eCommerce industry is expanding, with delivery options replacing traditional retail shopping. The current state of the delivery world is one of continual improvement, with next-day delivery options overtaking traditional two- or three-day delivery windows in 2018. Click and collect options have also grown in popularity, making up about a third of online orders. Meanwhile, it has also become possible for some large retailers to deliver orders within two hours of purchase.
However, there is still room for improvement, as 2018 saw a higher rate of failed deliveries. Another negative trend is the rise of serial returns, due to a culture of returning clothes after using them once. These issues result in expensive losses for retailers and eCommerce companies.
6 Current and Future Trends
Shipping companies are turning to smart technology for tracking purposes, to help improve their last-mile delivery logistics. This smart technology uses the Internet of Things (IoT), GPS, and electronic logging devices (ELD) to track shipments in real time. Smartphone apps make tracking more accessible to consumers. For example, SMS or email alerts can notify shippers and customers of each phase of a shipment, so they can know when to expect the arrival of a package, or if it gets lost.
Consumers and shippers can both receive SMS alerts, email notifications and even Google notifications for every movement a shipment makes. Combined with the upcoming mandate, the use of smart tech to track last mile logistics will grow. Being able to track a package is extremely important to a customer. It is important for them to be able to know when a package is supposed to arrive or even if it gets lost.
A growing number of retailers are taking advantage of third-party delivery options like pick up and pack companies, which handle the delivery logistics for them. These courier services are particularly suited for smaller eCommerce companies, enabling them to offer personalized delivery to the customer on the same day.
According to Technomic, the third-party delivery industry was worth $7.1 billion by the third quarter of 2018, and this will likely continue to grow. Independent shops and restaurants will have to embrace these services to stay relevant, and they risk becoming invisible to consumers if they do not offer delivery options, or if they do not appear on delivery apps.
Delivery Drones and Robots
Autonomous vehicles and their ilk, including trucks, drones, and delivery robots, are becoming more important. These technologies can improve last mile logistics, allowing the delivery industry to continue to grow and become more personalized even in the face of labor shortage issues. Autonomous delivery vehicles can help maintain high reliability and provide same-day delivery in urban or even rural areas.
Currently, the main obstacle to the growth of this industry is the existing regulation affecting the trucking industry. However, in a few years, regulations may change to enable the wide-scale use of driverless delivery services. Autonomous vehicles and delivery robots are still being developed and tested, but eventually, they will significantly cut the cost of delivery by eliminating the need for labor, which accounts for around 60 percent of overall costs. Furthermore, driverless technologies can work around the clock and allow for faster delivery.
Recent trials include the Amazon Prime Air drone service in the UK and Alibaba’s G Plus delivery robots, which can carry packages weighing up to 20 pounds and uses sensors such as radar, stereo vision, and ultrasonic to help navigate real-world conditions.
Locker Pick Up
In some cases, the more efficient option, compared to delivering packages directly to the customer, is to provide secure, self-service lockers from which customers can pick up their orders. Some couriers offer customers a choice, with locker pick-up presenting the most secure option, mitigating against lost or stolen packages. The customer receives a password via SMS or email, which opens the locker. It is also more cost-effective for the delivery companies, which can deliver multiple packages at once to a single location. An example of this system in practice is Amazon Locker, which offers more than 2,000 locations in over 50 cities.
While most shoppers (around 65 percent) use the internet to research products before they buy them, the most effective way to sell a product is to place the product and the information right in front of the consumer. As delivery becomes the norm, replacing stationary, physical stores, drivers may begin replacing traditional retailers, selling products directly from trucks. As driverless trucks replace the traditional role of the driver, truckers will have to adapt, becoming merchants and handling the logistics of sale and delivery, rather than the actual driving.
However, there are a number of challenges involved with the mobile merchant system, including regulations, payment and accounting processes, the burden of risk for unsold merchandise, and the practical logistics of handling returns.
Same-day delivery is becoming standard practice for many retailers. Consumers are willing to pay extra for faster delivery, especially same-day delivery. However, for same-day delivery services to be attractive, the cost must be reasonable, at around 7 or 8 percent of basket value. Same-day delivery is not only relevant to individual online consumers. For example, the Coca Cola express delivery service allows restaurants to receive deliveries within three hours of placing an order.
A Look to the Future
The future of last-mile delivery is one of great opportunity for retailers and customers alike. Postal operators are likely to grow in 2019 as they take advantage of international markets and increased demand for package delivery. As new technologies develop and the retail, restaurant, shipping, and eCommerce industries adopt these delivery trends, we are likely to see more fast, autonomous, and cost-effective service.

The key to getting the most out of your experience as an Instacart shopper is learning to work more efficiently. The faster and more accurate you are, the more earnings you can gain using the app. Whether you’re just picking up some part-time work on the side or you shop with Instacart as a full-time gig, use the tips below to become a more efficient Instacart Shopper.
1. Be Careful About Which Orders You Accept
Most Instacart Shoppers have gotten orders that required them to lug around a bunch of heavy items like cases of water, firewood, cat litter, and other bulk items. Though this may not be too difficult to maneuver when the items are in the store cart, getting them into your car and delivering them to the customer’s home is another story.
Heavy items are not only physically demanding but can really drag down your shopping and delivery times, which gives you less time to pick up other orders.
For this reason, look carefully at orders before you accept them. Orders from places like Costco, Sam’s Club, or pet stores like Petco often yield heavy bulk purchases that are difficult to carry and even more challenging to deliver, especially if there are stairs involved. A quick way to see if the order contains bulk buys is to look at the number of items vs. units. If you see 10 items and 120 units, there’s a good chance that you’re picking up cases of water or soda.
2. Get to Know the Stores You Shop In.
The most important efficiency tip for Instacart shoppers is to know the stores you shop in. No two stores are exactly the same, even if they belong to the same chain. Getting to know the different sections of the store, such as deli, produce, and bakery, as well as getting to know what’s located on the different aisles, will help you improve your speed and accuracy.
During your first few trips to a new location, be aware of your surroundings and make note of any major differences of locations of items. If you have a hard time locating an item in a new store, don’t waste time desperately searching. Instead, utilize the help of store employees to locate it.
The more you shop at the same locations, the better you will get to know where items are located. The better you get to know the stores, the more efficiently you can shop.
3. Scan the List Beforehand to Plan Your Shopping Route
Before you start a shopping trip, look at the list so you know which areas of the store you need to visit and which you can skip. Looking at the list ahead of time also allows you to put together a quick plan of action to ensure your route around the store is as efficient as possible.
As mentioned previously, no two stores are the same, even if they are in the same chain. Sometimes sections of the store will be in a different order or items will be located in different aisles. It’s best to shop in the order of the sections as they are laid out in the building. This saves you time from running back and forth across the store.
In addition to keeping in mind the order of sections, you’ll also want to prioritize the type of items you pick up first. For instance, you’ll want to save cold and frozen items for last so they remain cold when they get to the customer. Deli orders and other customized items may take longer, so shop for items near this section while you’re waiting for your deli number to be called.
4. Keep Multiple Orders Organized
One of the best ways to maximize your earnings on Instacart is to pick up multiple orders at one time. However, the more orders you accept, the more complicated the shopping trip can be. For this reason, make sure you have processes in place to keep multiple orders organized in the store and in your car.
A popular tip is to use baskets in addition to the shopping cart. This is a great way to keep items separated while you are shopping for multiple orders in the same store. You’ll also want to make sure you look over both orders carefully so you can tackle them at the same time.
In addition to keeping your order items separated in the store, knowing the location of different orders in your car makes it much easier to get the delivery to the customer faster and more accurately. It will save you time and confusion in trying to sort it out later.
5. Take Advantage of the Opportunity to Get Help to Your Car
Yet another way you can work to save time during your Instacart shopping trips is by getting help when you need it. At a few grocery stores, the bagger will offer to help take your items to the car. If you are only dealing with a few items, it won’t be worth the trouble. However, if you have a large haul or bulk items, you can save time by getting help loading these into your car.
Be careful if you are picking up multiple orders and accepting help to your vehicle. Remember that you want to keep different orders separated in your vehicle. Let the store employee know where you would like items to go as they are helping load your car.
These are just a few insider tips you can use to become a more efficient Instacart Shopper. Remember, it’s not just speed that matters, but also accuracy. Make sure you are not sacrificing your attention to detail, as picking up the wrong items for customers can affect your ratings and your tips. The better you get to know where things are located in the store, the faster your shopping times will be.

Caviar originated in New York City as a delivery service specializing in higher end restaurants from which delivery wasn’t usually available. They were acquired by mobile payments giant Square in 2014. Since then, they’ve partnered with over a thousand restaurants across the country to bring delivery to new heights.
Caviar delivery is available in the following major metro areas:

Dallas and Fort Worth – Hot Restaurants – Cane Rosso and Feed Company
Los Angeles & Orange County – Hot Restaurants – Shake Shack and Dune Atwater
New York City (Manhatten, Queens & Brooklyn) – Hot Restaurants – Prince Street Pizza, Circa Brewing, and Fat Radish

How Does Caviar Work?
1. You can explore the visual menus by the restaurant name, by cuisine type, or even by neighborhood. Check out restaurant ratings, too! Then, select a restaurant in the app.
2. Then, you browse the menu to find something you like
3. Add those dishes to your shopping cart.
4. Then check out. Don’t forget to leave a tip for your Caviar courier.
Similar to rideshare services like Lyft and Uber, Caviar uses GPS to find the delivery driver that’s closest to the restaurant around the time your food will be ready for pick up. The driver picks up your food from the restaurant, places it in a temperature controlled bag, and delivers it to your door.
If it’s your first time ordering, you’ll need to enter payment information. You can choose to save your payment information for future orders. Since Caviar is integrated with Square, online payment is secure. An order confirmation with an itemized receipt will let you know that the process of getting your food to you has begun.
Once your driver picks up the food, you can track your order stoplight by stoplight as it makes its way to you. Your delivery might be brought by bike, scooter or car.
Caviar also has exclusive partnerships with a number of restaurants. These restaurants will only fulfill deliver orders through Caviar.
Caviar Delivery Fees And Costs
For pickup orders, there are no order minimums or fees. For delivery orders, there are always a few $0 delivery restaurants being featured. Otherwise, delivery fees are different for each restaurant and order, depending on time and distance. However, delivery ranges are much less limited with Caviar. While a local restaurant might limit delivery hours or range, Caviar delivery operates with its own fleet of couriers. The cost is very reasonable when measured by the distance the courier is traveling.
A service fee of up 18 percent is applied to your subtotal for each Caviar delivery order. This fee is for customer support, logistics, and payment processing.
And of course, you should always tip your Caviar courier.

Caviar food ordering is simple, direct and easy to use. The Caviar app is a free download. The interface uses clear visuals to highlight the food and a secure payment interface. Local couriers bring your food directly to your door.

What Do Postmates Drivers Do?
Working for postmates means you are the one responsible for filling orders. Because you will be the ones on the front lines, it’s very important for you to provide great customer service.
But what’s the actual Postmates job like?
There are a variety of ways for you to work. Whether you choose to drive a car, a motorcycle or ride a bike is up to you. A lot of this decision also depends on where you live.
Keep in mind that Postmates is not in any way responsible for the maintenance costs of your vehicle. Because of this, having a vehicle that is reliable and that is kept maintained regularly is essential.
As was mentioned before, couriers create their own schedule. This flexibility allows you to choose however much or little you’d like to work.
Using The Postmates Fleet App
After downloading the app and setting up a courier account, you’re able to keep an eye out for orders to start coming in on the Postmates Fleet app. Postmates Fleet is a separate app from the regular customer Postmates app.
From there, you can start accepting orders.
After collecting the items in the customer’s order, simply go to their address and bring them their order.
The job is straightforward, and schedules are very flexible. Whether you’re looking for a part-time gig or something you can do full-time, driving for Postmates is a great opportunity for anyone in need of a little bit of extra cash.
Here’s a great little video that shows exactly what using the Postmates Fleet app and delivering for Postmates is really like.
What Is Postmates Driver Pay Like?
It really depends on your market and which hours you work. One survey says Postmates drivers make $19.11 per hour.
Postmates itself says drivers can make up to $27 per hour, although that’s probably too optimistic for many markets. While you may be able to make that (or more) in certain cities, the national average is lower.
Simply put, driver pay can vary a lot from market to market.
In most small to medium size markets, Postmates couriers make around $10 – $15 per hour before expenses.
If you sign up to drive for Postmates in a larger market like Chicago, Los Angeles, or New York City, you can expect to earn more, especially during busy hours.
There are also cities where delivery services are incredibly popular, which of course pushes demand for couriers higher.
Delivery services like Postmates are are heavily in demand in Brooklyn, Ft. Lauderdale, Las Vegas, Miami, and Phoenix.
But no matter your city, delivering for Postmates can be a very lucrative opportunity for anyone, during certain hours. And the ability to work as much or as little as you want can be a great chance to make some money.
Working for Postmates allows you to create your own schedule.
Instead of reporting to a single location to work every day, Postmates couriers work whenever they have time. This is perfect for those who are looking for a side hustle or for anyone that is currently in between jobs.
Drivers are simply expected to provide great service and complete orders quickly. It’s very important that you’re able to keep your orders organized and that you stay focused.
Postmates offers a unique opportunity for people to work on their own time. But how does this actually work?
One of the most important aspects of the job is getting tips.
If you work for Postmates, you keep 100% of the tips you make on deliveries. And on Postmates, the amount a customer tips does not decrease the amount a courier earns.
Tips can make a big difference in how much money you end up making per order. While it can be great when people do give you tips, you are likely to run into some cheap customers. Without tips, the job ends up paying a little bit less. However, most Postmates customers tip. So, if you’re using Postmates as a customer and not tipping, you’re doing it wrong.
In addition to relying on tips, there are also different fees that you need to consider about the job. Between vehicle maintenance and fees deducted from each order, it’s vital that you’re organized and focused when taking orders.
While working for Postmates can be a wonderful opportunity, not everyone can get a job with Postmates. It’s important to take some time to find out whether you’re qualified before you go through the application process.
What Are the Postmates Courier Requirements?
Working for Postmates can be great for a variety of different people. But what does it take to join the team?
Before you get started with working through the application process, there somethings that you can do to make sure you qualify.
Not only will you have to apply normally, but there are a few requirements for the job. While it may seem like common sense, it doesn’t hurt to know.
These requirements to drive for Postmates include:
Being 18 or older
Having a valid driver’s license as well as a vehicle that is insured (if you’ll be driving)
Passing a criminal background check
If you meet these requirements, it’s time to move onto the actual application process.
Apply For Postmates – What’s The Application Process Like?
The account creation process will ask for basic information like your name, date of birth, and phone number. You will also be asked to select which market you’re located in, the type vehicle you’ll be using, and to enter a referral code if you have one.
You will also be asked to enter a home address so you can be sent a pre-paid Postmates credit card. This card is for you to use when picking up orders. This especially comes in handy when customers haven’t paid for their orders.
The next step to joining the Postmates fleet is looking through the Fleet Agreement. This is essentially a terms and conditions document that goes provides an in-depth look at the job itself.
After reviewing this information, the next step is to authorize a background check. It’s important for customers to feel safe and comfortable using Postmates. This check will search various Federal and State databases for a personal criminal history.
From there, you simply need to complete the registration process. This includes uploading a nice profile picture and setting up a location and method for receiving payment.
After creating your Postmates Fleet account and receiving your Postmates welcome kit, you’ll be ready to go online and start delivering orders. Now that you’re a part of the Postmates Fleet, it’s up to you to uphold the company’s standards.
But what can you do to ensure you’re doing your job well?
What Makes a Great Postmates Courier?
The best Postmates couriers provide the best service they can. This is an important part of the job, especially for new couriers.
Not only do couriers act as the face of the company, but customers also expect their orders to arrive on-time. The job can sometimes be a very high-pressure, but it’s important to step back and try to enjoy yourself.
The key to success as a driver for Postmates is being prepared, completing orders quickly, and getting tips.
Postmates courier making a delivery.
Becoming a great Postmates driver means working hard to always get orders done and engaging with customers. Check out these helpful tips to get you started as a driver. Not only will these tips help you better understand what it means to be a part of the Postmates Fleet, but they will also help you make the most of your time, so you can drive profitably.
Know Your City
One of the most important steps to becoming a great driver is knowing your way around town. Getting familiar with the ins and outs of your city can help minimize your navigation time.
While you probably won’t be able to master every street in your city, you can take a minute to familiarize yourself with how neighborhoods and areas are laid out. Locations like New York City have very specific ways in which areas are sectioned from one another. Understanding these divisions can help you navigate quickly.
However, there is a very good chance you’ll still have to rely on a GPS of some kind for most of your orders. In this case, it’s best to have a mount of some kind for your phone to navigate hands-free. While getting orders completed on time is a big part of your job, safety is the number one priority.
It also helps to know where the more expensive restaurants are. These places usually have more expensive items on their menu, which means more money for you.
At the end of the day, the best way to get familiar with your surroundings is to go out and explore. Whether it’s while you’re working or just for fun, it never hurts to see what’s around you.
Customer service is an important part of driving for Postmates. Not only does it reflect well on the company as a whole, but it can also say a lot about you.
Good customer service is more than just doing what is expected. Going that extra mile can result in more tips and repeated orders from the customer.
In addition to double checking your orders to make sure you get everything, there are other little things that you can do to take your job to the next level.
For starters, grabbing extra napkins, utensils, and additional sauces can make a difference. While some may not even notice this, there will be some that appreciate the gesture, and tip accordingly.
Delivering the order in person is another way to make the customer’s experience more personal. While there will be situations where you’ll have to leave the order at a leasing office or have them meet you halfway, it’s always nice to try to bring the order right to their doorstep.
When the customer receives their order, make sure you give them a receipt. Each receipt will have your name printed on it, making it easy for them to call in case there was something wrong with the order.
Providing customers with this kind of service not only increases your chances of getting tipped well, but it encourages them to order again.
Time and Location
Where you’re located can play a major role in what kind of Postmates orders you receive. If you’re located in major Postmates cities like New York, Los Angeles, or Chicago, you’re more likely to have better luck with getting more orders.
But that’s not to say there isn’t anything in smaller cities. As Postmates continues to grow, more people will begin using it.
An important part of this growth revolves around great customer service. When one customer has a great experience, they are likely to recommend it to a friend.
While you might not be able to do much about where you live, you can do something about when you work. Because Postmates lets you make your own schedule, you can choose to work when you know it’ll be busy.
This might take some trial and error to figure out, but it can also be the most beneficial for you. In most Postmates markets, the busy times are during the lunch and dinner hours. A good number of drivers for Lyft or Uber often drive delivery for Postmates during lunch or other times when Uber or Lyft aren’t as busy.
However, when it gets busy really differs from market to market. Some Postmates markets are busy during normal mealtimes, while others actually get busy in the mornings or late at night. It ultimately depends on where you live and how customers around you behave.
A big part of doing well at Postmates is how you choose to manage your time. Deciding which orders to accept and how many you take on at one time can make a huge difference.
Some choose to accept multiple orders at once. This way, you can pick up all the items at once and deliver them one after another. While it is a great way to complete a lot of orders quickly, you will have to deliver them in the order they were received. It’s an annoying quirk of the Postmates system.
Another strategy is to enable the “auto-accept” function on the app. This will automatically add deliveries to your route.
At the end of the day, maximizing your profits depends on how you choose to manage your orders. However, the more orders you take, the more your take is likely to be.
Should You Become a Postmates Driver?
Services like Postmates are allowing more people to make their own work schedules. The freedom and flexibility that comes with driving for Postmates can be tricky to manage at first. But over time, you will get the hang of how to use your time wisely.
But how do you know if you should drive for Postmates? This depends on your personal situation. If this flexibility is something you need in a job, then it may be the perfect fit.
If you’re ready, click the button below to get started as a Postmates courier!

Doordash Driver – How To Get A Doordash Delivery Job
While you can make as much as $25 per hour as a Dasher, as the company refers to its delivery workers, average full-time pay is more likely to be in the $14 – $20/hr range, and can vary substantially by location.
These are basic requirements that every Doordash dasher needs to meet. Much of the process you’ll go through is similar to what drivers for Uber and Lyft go through, but you don’t need to worry about specifics such as having a four-door car since you’re delivering food, not people.
Doordash jobs aren’t as complicated as you might expect. Once you fill out your application and get approved, you’re ready to start signing up for shifts and getting paid.
There’s usually no orientation or the need to shadow someone else. And because you’re setting your own hours, you’ll have greater freedom over deciding what days and times work best for your needs.
One important aspect to be aware of is you should know your city. The more efficient you are in getting around town, the more you’ll earn as a Doordash dasher.
So, if you’re new in town, get used to driving around, finding out where restaurants are and know your way around.
This includes learning about neighborhoods and residential roads, too. After all, you’ll need to drive to your customers once you’ve picked up food from the restaurant of their choice.
Doordash dashers are independent contractors, so you’ll need to supply a few items. That includes your smartphone, car, insurance, and any supplies you might need for your work.
The good news is, all the supplies you purchase and the use of your phone, can get deducted for work purposes come tax time.
The dasher app is where you’ll perform the majority of your work as a driver.
Once you pass your background check and are approved to start dashing, the first thing you’ll need to do is choose when and where you want to dash. You can schedule dash shifts up to five days in advance, or six once you qualify for Dasher early access.
Peak times to drive doordash are usually on weekdays between 11:00AM – 2:00PM and 5:00PM – 9:00PM.
Once you start your shift, you’ll log in to the Doordash dasher app when you’re ready and tap “Dash Now.”
Each Doordash market is divided into zones. While you can choose to dash in different zones within your market, you must start in the zone you selected for your shift.
Demand in the Doordash app is color coded. The darker the red, the more need for dashers in that zone.
Once you start your shift, you’ll have the opportunity to take orders as they come in.
You’ll always be able to see the guaranteed earnings for the individual delivery up front.
Doordash Driver Pay – How Much Do Doordash Drivers Make?
When Doordash first started, they offered dashers a set amount per hour.
Doordash driver pay changed in 2017, and now Doordash no longer offers a minimum payout. This means it’s important to figure out what times you’ll make the most money.
However, Doordash does still tell you the minimum you’ll earn on each individual delivery, before you accept it.
Here are a few things to remember about driver pay when you’re venturing out for the first time.
There are certain peak periods where you are likely to earn the most. Generally, these are during lunch and dinner hours.
Certain periods may have bonuses attached to them.
Doordash will send you notifications that tell you about any specials for drivers going on.
Just as there are sign-on bonuses and promos for Lyft drivers who sign up, certain markets offer a sign up bonus or guaranteed earnings.
Doordash pays all dashers weekly by direct deposit. Any tips you received through the app get transferred during this time and are deposited with the rest of the money earned while driving. Drivers / Dashers on Doordash keep 100% of their tips.
Although the pay structure operates differently than it used to, you can still make a good part or full-time job out of driving for Doordash.

As touched on earlier, there are certain times where you can earn extra working for Doordash than you normally would. Known as bonus periods, these get indicated on the app and vary based on where you’re located, what time of day it is, and if it’s a holiday.
Doordash calls these special times busy pay. They normally expect more customers to order during this period than there are drivers to serve them. As a consequence, dashers who drive during those times are likely to make more.
They want to encourage more drivers to come out during this time period, so they use this pay structure as a way for them to earn extra. This is a win-win for everyone since customers get their food and drivers make extra.
If you get a Busy Pay order, it’ll come up on the driver app when you’re alerted, so there’s no mistaking what it is. Take advantage of these when you can.
Learn How Tips Work for Drivers
While driving or dashing for Doordash, there’s more than one way to get a tip. While cash tips are always nice, customers can also tip directly in the Doordash delivery app.
If you bring your delivery to the customer and don’t get anything more than thanks, don’t assume they don’t appreciate your hard work or didn’t tip you. Many people don’t carry cash on them and look for alternative ways to tip servers and delivery drivers.
Also, the customer may not leave the tip in the Doordash customer app right away. If you don’t see the tip right away, check your Doordash earnings the next day.
Tips are often dependent on how quickly you bring the food to the customer, the time of day, if the order was checked for accuracy, and sometimes your personality. Gain a better understanding of what drives people to tip you, but understand that unfortunately, not everyone follows proper tipping etiquette.
People can rate drivers based on their delivery, so make sure to leave every customer with a smile and thank them for their business.
Know How Dashing Affects Your Vehicle
Because we’ve established you’ll work as an independent contractor, figure out how this impacts your car, motorcycle or bike. Some considerations to think about are:
How often you drive or deliver for Doordash
How far you’re driving or riding when you’re Dashing
The condition of the roads in your area
The weather and type of climate you live in
What kind of condition your vehicle is currently in
Understanding Taxes and Being an Independent Contractor
If you’re used to bing an employee, you know that a certain amount gets withheld from your paycheck each week. That means you don’t have to set aside money come tax time.
When you’re working as an independent contractor for Doordash, you’ll notice taxes aren’t taken out. This sounds nice at first and can trick you into thinking you’re making more money.
Be careful, and make sure you’re setting aside part of your Doordash earnings. Setting aside money for tax time is important since you’ll likely owe taxes at the end of the year. Also, be sure to take every tax deduction you’re allowed to, including the mileage tax deduction.

Considering a career in cannabis? Welcome to the club. Weed delivery is a concept that conjures up lots of pre-conceived notions, and most of all, opinions and judgments. Luckily, this is all about to change. Many are looking to jump on the bandwagon as the multi-billion dollar industry explodes, while others are still scared of having anything to do with cannabis. This is understandable considering it is still considered illegal on the federal front. So, before you get started on your side hustle (or full-time hustle) here are some fast facts to guide you.
What Types of Delivery Services Are There?
There are several different types of cannabis delivery companies (with new companies jumping into the business every day). Let’s start with the most important question you should look for when considering a company: Are they licensed?
This is scary for several reasons. You could be arrested even though you aren’t knowingly doing anything wrong (however, the law won’t see it that way), you have no protections in place if you are robbed, as the company is not insured whatsoever, and chances are, the company doesn’t have proper safety precautions in place to prevent you from being robbed or injured.
Do you really want to work for an employer who doesn’t care enough about your safety? While this isn’t a deal breaker, if you are being paid in cash — as many cannabis companies are having trouble finding banks to work with them — your employer may not be operating legally. That said, if you are delivering for a mom and pop type operation that doesn’t have Silicon Valley investment backing, cash is often a standard form of payment.
Now a Caveat
If you are working for a cannatech delivery company (for instance, Eaze, Meadow, SpeedWeed, Nugg, Grassp, or GreenRush) they may not have a cannabis license, and this is currently acceptable. Again, this is subject to change due to evolving state regulation. So, how do companies get around this? They don’t grow or distribute the product directly themselves. They are considered a technology service that connects brick and mortar dispensaries with drivers (who are paid by a third party). These companies are complying with strict laws, which are detailed below in Hiring Protocols.
Where They Differ
Okay, so let’s say you found a delivery company that is compliant and operating with a state-issued non-storefront license. How will this experience differ from delivery with a cannatech company?
Broadly speaking, the less stringent the vetting process, the less they’ll trust you with a bunch of their product at once. You should expect to put extra mileage on your car, as you will pick up each order separately, unless the dispensary receives several orders at one time that happen to be going to the same part of town. You’re also likely to make a low hourly wage, if you even get one. Many delivery companies only pay per delivery. So, if you’re waiting around on a slow shift, you’ll make nothing until you fulfill a delivery request.
With a cannatech company like Eaze, you’ll make an hourly wage, usually between $15 and $24 an hour, which is much more than the majority of non-tech delivery services. That said, if you are used to the “driving whenever you feel like it” practice that is standard in the Uber, Lyft, and DoorDash world, you should know that working for Eaze is different. They give you a set schedule, where you are expected to be punctual and reliable. If you cannot cover your shift, you find someone to cover you.
Where They Converge
To deliver for any type of cannabis service you must be 21 or older. Period. Depending on the thoroughness of the vetting process, you may have to submit to a criminal background check and show a clean driving record. Again, these requirements are out the window if the company is operating illegally without a license.
With a cannatech company that is complying fully with the law, you should expect a complex questionnaire along with your application to drive. Questions will include what type of phone model you’ll be using for work (to see if it’s compatible with their operating software), proof of car registration, a clean driving record, a background check, and proof that you are legal to work in the United States. Then, you’ll have not just a phone interview, but also an in-person interview. For those of you new to the delivery game, this is largely unheard of.
On the less rigorous side of things, you could experience a watered down version of any of the above requirements. Things may be as casual as replying to a Craigslist ad or 420careers ad, submitting your driver’s license, and then showing up for your first shift. If this is the full vetting process for a company, you may want to be more cautious about working for them.
Yes, sadly you will run into problematic patients. However, it is generally the budtenders who deal with them. Some will try to give you an ID with an image that clearly doesn’t match their face. Some have expired IDs. Some will grab the product and run away without paying (this does NOT happen often… especially with a compliant company who has fully collected personal information from the patient). Some like to complain with hopes of receiving free product (like in any customer service industry).
You’ll usually receive (along with the order) a note stating if the delivery is for a returning patient or a new patient. Be wary of any new patient requesting cash change for a large amount of money. If you are working with a reputable dispensary, they should be aware of this as a red flag, and will ensure all safety precautions necessary. Now, with all of that said the majority of your patients will be…
You’ll hear a lot of griping about cranky patients who are handicapped, chronically ill, in pain, or elderly. This may be the case if someone is promised delivery within the hour, and it takes three hours to arrive.
The reality is, these patients are the sweetest, often shy and nervous, and so grateful. They will often be so happy to see you because they might not have a lot human contact and socialization. It isn’t out of the question for your dispensary to give you permission to go to their door to deliver if they are unable to walk out to your car.
Your cannatech company will likely install a camera in your car, and will constantly be tracking your location through their GPS-enabled app. They’ll also equip you with a securely hidden device to store your day’s worth of product while driving around the city. This differs from smaller operations that hand off each delivery to you individually. While there aren’t soundproof protections in place for these types of delivery, the amount of product you are transporting at a time is much smaller.
So, while your new job delivering a newly legalized, controlled substance may feel illicit and strange at first, it isn’t. Be wise, and don’t hesitate to report suspicious behavior or anyone who makes you feel strange. And remember, you’ll likely be on camera for a large part of your shift, depending on the company you work for. For those looking for a thrill, delivering cannabis is no more exciting than Postmates delivery or Uber, there are just more precautions set in place and potentially better earnings.

What’s the Best Style of Vehicle for Food Delivery Drivers?
Food delivery has become a staple in the on-demand industry, with companies like Doordash, Caviar, and Postmates leading the way.
To keep up with the increasing number of customers, more drivers are hitting the streets. Unlike rideshare however, food delivery drivers have a wider range of vehicle choices available to them. But, how do you figure out which one is right for you?
In this guide, we’ll take a closer at the vehicle options for food delivery as well as the requirements of the top delivery services. Keep reading to figure out the best style for your needs.
The Most Common Types of Food Delivery Vehicles
When making your vehicle decision, you need to consider a variety of factors. These items include the layout of your city and the service area. For instance, while a 5-mile ride on a bike isn’t too bad, pedaling for 10 or 15 miles in one direction might be too overwhelming. Consider these factors as you learn about each option.
The most common types of food delivery vehicle fall into four categories:
Moped or motorcycle
Car, Truck, or SUV
Cars, trucks, and SUVs are all acceptable options for food delivery. Even two-seater options provide plenty of room to safely store and transport food. The benefit of a cabin also means you won’t be constantly exposed to the elements, like wind and rain.
However, delivery drivers put a lot of miles on their vehicle. As a result, you should expect to take fuel, maintenance, and repair costs out of your delivery earnings.
The bonus of a using a car is that you can handle larger orders. This can come in handy for large corporate orders you may get driving for Caviar or Doordash, or larger grocery store orders that you may get on Instacart.
A traditional bicycle is a popular choice for many delivery drivers. While this type of vehicle still has to follow the rules of the road, it makes getting through busy areas easier. Plus, you don’t have to worry about the time it takes to find car parking for pick-ups and delivery.
Since electric bicycles are becoming more readily available, they’re becoming a common choice for many couriers as well. With the boost of electric power, you have the ability to reduce your travel time and make more deliveries.
Moped or Motorcycle
Mopeds are a fantastic vehicle for food delivery, and the second most popular choice for delivery drivers, behind cars. They’re usually more comfortable and roomier than bicycles. They’re also easy to attach a food satchel, which keeps food warm or cool and out of the sun. Most mopeds run on batteries and require little upkeep, so you won’t have to pay for fuel and or high maintenance costs.
Actual motorcycles typically have larger engines and higher speed capabilities than mopeds. With this option, you can make better time by taking highways and interstates. However, there are also driver restrictions, like licensing and insurance.
Old-school, two-wheel, scooters have made a comeback in recent years, with one difference. They’re now electric. As a result, they’ve also become a popular transportation choice for delivery drivers. The biggest perk of using an electric scooter is the size. Not only are they incredibly lightweight, but many models fold up as well. These qualities help make deliveries more convenient, as drivers are able to take their vehicle into restaurants, on elevators, and right up to customers’ doors. The most popular model is the GOTRAX GXL.
Food Delivery Company Restrictions & Qualifications
Aside from your personal preferences, you also need to consider the company you want to partner with. Many people choose to work with multiple food delivery services so they have plenty of money-making opportunities. Regardless of the number of companies you partner with, it’s important that you choose a vehicle that matches each service’s requirements.
Here’s a look at the top options. All of these options offer a sign up bonus or guarantee in most markets. To be eligible, simply click one of the “Join” buttons below to start your application.
DoorDash Vehicle Requirements
DoorDash is one of the most popular food delivery services and currently operates in nearly 2,000 markets. The company accepts Dasher applicants with any style and age of the car, whether it’s a two- or four-door model. This specification also includes trucks and SUVs. However, in some markets, DoorDash also allows drivers to use bicycles, electric scooters, and motorcycles. In a few select markets, you can even complete deliveries on foot. Check your market for specifics.
Caviar is another top food delivery service, specializing in higher end restaurants. Caviar offers a wide range of vehicle options. Couriers can utilize traditional four- or two-wheel vehicles, including bicycles, mopeds, and motorcycles. For cars, trucks, SUVs, and motorcycles, the vehicle needs official registration and the minimum insurance coverage required by your state. Like DoorDash, Caviar only delivers food orders, so any of the vehicle options are likely to work well.
Postmates drivers often provide food delivery, but their services also include delivery of products from other types of local businesses. The company allows the full spectrum of vehicles in its fleet, from cars and trucks to bicycles and mopeds. But, you also have the option to ride electric variations of scooters and bicycles.
Postmates has also now started offering a vehicle assistance program to their delivery drivers. Instead of car rentals, like many rideshare companies, members of their fleet have the option to rent an electric scooter or bicycle from GenZe. Currently, this program is only offered in select markets.
While many customers utilize Postmates for food delivery, you’re likely to end up also delivering things like office supplies. The wider market is great for business because it provides more delivery opportunities. However, the potential weight of non-food orders may make delivery on a traditional bicycle or scooter a struggle. As a result, it’s best to utilize a car or electric two-wheel mode of transportation for Postmates.
Uber Eats is Uber’s food delivery service. In the majority of cities, the company allows drivers to utilize cars as well as bicycles and mopeds. However, each style has its own requirements.
Uber Eats Car Requirements
Vehicle 20 years old or newer.
Driver must be at least 19 years old.
Uber Eats Bicycle Requirements
Riders 18 years and older accepted.
Uber Eats Scooter Requirements
Rider needs to be at least 19 years old.
No three- or four-wheel models accepted.
Maximum speeds of 30 mph.
Motor needs to be 50cc or less.
Uber designed their food delivery service to allow its rideshare drivers to participate in between services. As a result, Uber drivers can accept delivery and ride requests at the same time. However, if you would like to make money from both services, you’ll need to utilize a car or SUV that meets the stricter Uber rideshare requirements.
Which Style of Food Delivery Vehicle Is Right for You?
Choosing the right vehicle style involves considering a variety of factors. However, most of the companies allow drivers to switch vehicles. So, if you start with a car and want to move to a moped, it shouldn’t be a big issue. The grocery delivery service provides a convenient alternative to in-person shopping trips. You can even skip the delivery fee ($35 minimum order) with our Instacart promo code.
To get started with free Instacart delivery, click the button below (no need to actually enter a code), or read on to learn more about Instacart and how to use it.
Instacart is an on-demand grocery service. Customers order their products through the app, and then a personal shopper does the rest. After putting together the order, the Instacart shopper delivers the groceries directly to your door. Essentially, it’s the Caviar of the grocery delivery world.
Instacart is available in hundreds of locations across the country, including both large and small cities. Along with grocery stores, they also service pet supply stores. Some orders are available for delivery within one hour, but two-hour delivery is the standard.
How Does Instacart Work?
Requesting grocery delivery is simple with Instacart. You can shop through the Instacart app, available on Apple and Android devices, or on the website.
1. Create Your Account
First, create an account using your email, Facebook information, or Google account. You can browse shops without creating an account.
2. Choose a Store
The system will use your address to provide you with a list of stores available in your area. Select the store you want to access their products.
3. Start Shopping
Browse the store’s offerings or use the search function to find specific items. When you find the right product, add it to your cart.
After completing your shopping list, review your cart. As long as everything looks good, tap “Checkout.”
5. Choose Delivery Option
Next, it’s time to select a delivery option.
Shoppers can select delivery times in one-hour windows on the same day or later in the week. It’s also important to note that one- and two-hour delivery options aren’t always available, especially during peak times and with large orders. During busier times, Instacart delivery charges will be higher.
After you’ve chosen your Instacart delivery time, simply click place order. Instacart is also compatible with Apple Pay.
6. Track Delivery
The Instacart app also allows you to track your order’s progress in real-time.
Since the total cost of your groceries depends on weighted items, similar to deli meat, the exact total is calculated at delivery. Instacart places a temporary authorization hold on your account for 10 to 15 percent higher than the estimated total at checkout. This process provides room for any weighted cost variations or last-minute changes. Once you receive your order, the final amount is charged to your account.

What Is Instacart Express?
Instacart Express is the grocery delivery company’s membership option. By joining, you gain unlimited access to multiple perks, including:
Free delivery on orders over $35
No Busy Pricing costs
Order from multiple stores without additional fees
The Instacart Express program costs $149 per year. You can also join on a per-month basis for $14.99. While delivery fees are waived, you will still pay service and alcohol fees.
Instacart Service and Delivery Costs
As with every delivery service, Instacart users pay a variety of service charges. These costs include base fees, delivery charges, and tipping. Here’s a breakdown:
In the past, Instacart has implemented various versions of their service fee policy. For a while, it was completely optional, and then it jumped up to a mandatory 10 percent charge. Now, the grocery delivery company has found a happy medium. The current Instacart service fee is 5 percent of the order subtotal with a $2 minimum. The only exception is New York City, which has a service fee of 7 percent.
The base service fee doesn’t include alcohol. For those orders, there’s a percentage-based fee. The cost levels are broken up like this:
$0 to $35—$2 fee
Over $35 to $75—$4 fee
Over $75 to $110—$8 fee
Each category is determined by the total amount of alcohol products, not the total order cost. However, it is added to the delivery total on top of the service fee.
There’s also a base delivery fee for Instacart orders. The delivery company calculates this charge based on the order size and delivery time. On a budget? The Instacart app allows you to compare fees between different delivery windows at checkout. You can also bypass the delivery fee on your first order with our Instacart promo code.
During times of high demand, the company implements Busy Pricing. This system increases the delivery fee total but doesn’t affect the price of the products or the service fee. Busy Pricing is designed to spread out demand and prevent a backed up queue.
Customers aren’t required to tip their Instacart shopper, but it’s recommended. Instacart suggests a minimum 5 percent tip. A $2 tip is pre-selected in the app at checkout. However, you can choose to accept that amount or adjust it to a customized number. The Instacart app allows you to change the tip amount for up to three days after your order is delivered.
What Sets Instacart Apart?
Instacart isn’t the only grocery delivery service on the market. To stand out from the crowd, the company offers a variety of unique perks.
The system makes it easy to communicate directly with your shopper. If you have special instructions for certain products, you can add them to each individual item in your cart. After the order is placed, customers can message their shopper with any important details.
The service is designed around grocery delivery, but they also offer a pickup option. For this selection, your Instacart shopper still does all of the legwork. They put together your order in full at the store of your choosing. You simply have to stop by, grab your groceries, and go.
Instacart offers their customers exclusive deals. These savings are highlighted on select items during your online shopping experience. They also highlight limited-time deals at the top of the app or webpage.
Unfortunately, customers can’t apply in-store sales or their own coupons. However, the company does add various manufacturer coupons to their system. When you buy products that qualify, the app automatically applies the Instacart coupons.
To provide a more customized shopping experience, Instacart creates personalized suggestions. The app highlights your most frequently bought items so that you can click and go. They also offer suggestions based on your shopping habits.
One of Instacart’s biggest bragging points is their customer service. They offer around-the-clock phone support. For less time-sensitive issues, you can contact a community support member by email. There’s also the option of reporting an issue directly through the app.
