Minneapolis is the 16th largest metropolitan area in the United States. Consisting of some 3.6 million residents, the Twin Cities Metro is not only the economic hub of Minnesota but is one of the largest economic centers in the Midwest. Since the introduction of Uber and Lyft to the region in 2012, rideshare has been a mainstay of the Minneapolis scene.
However, with the average spent on Lyft and Uber in Minneapolis at $34 per month, compared to $56 in Atlanta and $84 in New York, it is important to know where and when to drive if you want to drive profitably. The difference in where and when you start driving can be the difference between a busy night and a low fares outing.
Looking for A Job That Causes Less Wear And Tear On Your Car?
Minneapolis has worked hard to be accommodating to Lyft and Uber. Per Minnesota Public Radio, in 2018 there were more than 5,000 Uber and Lyft drivers cleared to serve the Minneapolis-Saint Paul Airport, compared to just 600 taxis. This willingness to embrace ridesharing gives drivers advantages in pick-ups, particularly downtown.
On weekend nights, for example, 1st and Hennepin Avenues between 3rd and 6th Streets are closed to regular traffic. Rideshare drivers can enter the area at 6th and 1st and 6th and Hennepin. It is important that the vehicle is wearing its proper trade dress on both the front and back windshields.
During daylight hours, the best places to drive are downtown, Dinkytown, and Bloomington.
Downtown: The heart of the Minneapolis business scene, it goes without saying that transporting work commuters can be lucrative. Popular spots include Target Center, Hennepin Avenue, the Metro Transit stations, Nicollet Mall, the Hennepin County office complex.
Parking and traffic can be challenging, particularly during rush hour. When driving downtown during prime hours, it is important to set aside enough time to handle the traffic or to learn how to navigate alternative routes.
Dinkytown: Dinkytown is populated by University of Minnesota students and recent alumni. North of the University of Minnesota Twin Cities East Bank campus, Dinkytown is usually buzzing in the day with both students traveling to and from class and tourists.
Al’s Breakfast, arguably the smallest restaurant in the state, and the Loring Pasta Bar—which is in the building where Bob Dylan lived—are all in the neighborhood. During the University of Minnesota football season, weekend demand to and from Dinkytown is a must for rideshare drivers.
Bloomington: While technically not part of Minneapolis, the affluent suburb of Bloomington is home to the Best Buy, HealthPartners, Toro, and Ceridian corporate offices, the Mall of America, and the Minneapolis-Saint Paul Airport. As Bloomington is a large city in its own right—the fifth largest in the state—it is advisable to choose a spot, such as the airport, to work instead of roaming. The airport uses a “first-in, first-out” system, meaning that drivers need to enter a designated waiting area in the “FIFO zone” to receive priority queuing for airport passengers.
Bde Maka Ska: Formerly Lake Calhoun, Bde Maka Ska is the largest lake in Minneapolis. Surrounded by city parks and walking trails, the lake is a popular destination year-round.
Bde Maka Ska Lake
At night, the best spots are:
Target Field, Target Center, Xcel Energy Center, and U.S. Bank Stadium: Minneapolis is a city for hardcore sports fans. Whether it’s the Vikings, the Timberwolves, the Twins, or the Lynx, Minneapolis has a professional team for everyone. It is important for rideshare drivers to know the game schedules for all four stadiums in order to maximize pickups.
Uptown: The hub of young professional and hipster life in the city, Uptown is the place to be for the 18- to 35-year-old demographic. Popular spots are Calhoun Square, Cowboy Slim’s, Stella’s Fish Café, Sushi Tango, the VFW Post, and the Green Mill.
Dinkytown: The college students will want to go out and party. Safe bets are the Varsity, Fraternity Row, and 14 Avenue SE.
Downtown/Hennepin Avenue: Home of the Saloon, the Orpheum theater, First Avenue, and the Butcher & the Boar, driving Hennepin at night can be challenging, but rewarding.
Warehouse District: The home of Target Field, the Warehouse District is full of coffeehouse, museums, restaurants, and boutiques. Popular spots are the Fulton Brewing Taproom, Gay 90’s, Cowboy Jack’s, the Pourhouse, and Bar La Grassa.
It should be noted that not every neighborhood/area will be busy all the time. Especially during the winter, a driver may find more fares in the residential neighborhoods than staking out the commercial ones. Good residential areas to try are Lyn-Lake, CARAG, and Northeast Minneapolis.
When to Drive
The best time to drive depends on the area:
Bloomington: 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Friday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. weekends for the Minneapolis-Saint Paul Airport, and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day for the Mall of America.
Downtown: 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and midnight to 3 a.m. Monday through Friday, 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. Two hours before and after performances at the Orpheum and First Avenue, and two hours before and after events at Target Field, Target Center, and the Xcel Energy Center.
Warehouse District: 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. every day.
Dinkytown: 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. Monday through Saturday.
The Metro Transit Stations (Target field, MSP, Mall of America): 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day.
Uptown: 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. Monday through Saturday.
For a full-time driver, a good strategy is to start with the downtown commutes and work toward the airport.
The airport is busiest Tuesday through Thursday, with peak times at 7 a.m., 9 a.m., 1 p.m., 5 p.m., and 7 p.m.
It is typically better to drive rideshare on weekends than weekdays, but if a driver is willing to show some flexibility, it is possible to keep your queue full. It is important that, before you drive, you are familiar with the city and are comfortable navigating without a map.
Uber vs. Lyft In Minneapolis
Uber and Lyft both appeared in Minneapolis roughly at the same time. Both offer various bonuses and incentives for new and existing drivers. As a driver, you tend to wind up favoring one or the other. However, many Minneapolis drivers sign up for both Lyft and Uber and alternate sign-ins based on current rates.

Lyft Car Requirements For Every U.S. Market
When it comes to your vehicle, in most places, if your car is less than 15 years old, it should meet the Lyft vehicle requirements for your state or market. This is quite a change from a few years ago. It used to be that you needed a car that was less than 8 years old to drive with Lyft in most places. In some cities, the Lyft vehicle requirements specified a vehicle that was a maximum of 5 years old!
Lyft loosened their vehicle requirements in 2016 to allow older vehicles onto the system. Since the average age of a car in the United States is 11.8 years, this opened up the Lyft platform to a lot more available vehicles and helped spur their incredible 2017 growth spurt.
Lyft currently offers five different vehicle types to riders: Lyft (regular sedans), Lyft XL (7 seats+), Lyft Lux (fancier), Lyft Lux Black (fanciest), and Lyft Lux Black XL (fanciest suvs).
To qualify for Lyft or Lyft XL in most places, you’ll need a 2004 or newer vehicle. The other vehicle types are part of Lyft’s premium services. The Lyft vehicle requirements for premium vehicles are more stringent, and now require at least a 2011 or newer vehicle. In many states, regardless of your vehicle’s age, you’ll need to pass a vehicle inspection to make sure the car is in good condition.
The Lyft vehicle requirements for all services were last updated by Lyft at the end of June, 2018. Lyft only updates vehicle requirements once a year. So, if your vehicle is a 2004 model, in most Lyft markets, you’ll be able to drive that car for at least a year on the Lyft system. In June, 2019, though, the Lyft markets that require a 2004 vehicle will likely switch to require a 2004 vehicle instead.
Further down this page, we cover the specific Lyft car requirements for Lyft XL, Lyft Lux, Lyft Lux Black, and Lyft Lux Black XL. Then, we briefly go over the Lyft vehicle condition, Lyft inspection (including where to get your Lyft vehicle inspection), and Lyft driver requirements.

Lyft has five different vehicle services. Recently, Lyft released a new rider app in which they renamed some of their service offerings. For example, Lyft Plus (vehicles that can seat seven people total) is now called Lyft XL.
Lyft Vehicle Age Requirements
Lyft has recently changed the vehicle age requirements for all of their Premium service lines (Lyft Lux, Lyft Lux Black, and Lyft Lux Black XL). Always pay close attention to Lyft’s vehicle age requirements. In many cities, if you have a 2004 model year car, it will currently qualify for Lyft. But it probably won’t next year.
Here’s the current lineup of the different Lyft services and the vehicles that qualify.
Regular Lyft Service Lines
Lyft – This is the basic Lyft service, which includes Lyft shared rides. If your vehicle has 5 seat belts, four doors (no jump doors), and meets the Lyft vehicle age requirements for your market, you can use it to drive with Lyft. However, taxis and other commercial vehicles will not qualify.
Lyft XL (formerly Lyft Plus) – Lyft XL provides vehicles that can seat 7 passengers or more (including the driver). If your vehicle meets Lyft’s vehicle requirements and has 7 or more seats, you will also be able to accept Lyft XL rides. Large passenger vans that seat 12-20 people will not qualify for Lyft.
Premium Lyft Service Lines
Lyft Lux (formerly Lyft Premier) – To qualify for Lyft Lux, you’ll need a relatively new, high-end vehicle (2012 – 2016 or newer). Typical vehicles include BMW, Mercedes, and Lexus. See below for the full Lyft Lux vehicle list.
Lyft Lux Black – To qualify for Lyft Lux Black, you’ll need a very new luxury vehicle (2014 or newer 2016 or 2018 in some markets). The car must have a black exterior, and a leather or faux-leather interior. See below for the full Lyft Lux Black vehicle list.
Lyft Lux Black XL – If your vehicle qualifes for Lyft Lux Black, and has 7 or more seat belts, you will also be able to accept Lyft Lux Black XL rides. These are some of the most lucrative rides in the Lyft universe.
Lyft XL Vehicle Requirements
If you want to drive Lyft XL and your vehicle qualifies for regular Lyft, the only additional requirement is that your car has seven seat belts total, six for passengers and one for the driver.
Once you’re approved to drive, if your vehicle has seven seat belts, you should automatically be able to accept Lyft XL rides. If you’re not, you’ll definitely want to contact Lyft and let them know your vehicle qualifies for Lyft XL. Lyft XL rates are often 50% – 100% higher than regular Lyft rates.
Lyft Lux Vehicle Requirements (Models and Age)
With the introduction of the new Lyft rider app, Lyft has also changed the age requirements for Lyft Lux (formerly Lyft Premiere) vehicles. As recently as June of 2018, you could qualify for Lyft Lux with a 2009 vehicle. Now, you’ll need at least a 2012 or newer vehicle in most cases. In a few cases, you’ll need a 2016 or newer vehicle to qualify for Lyft Lux.
Lyft Lux is currently available in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, San Francisco, Silicon Valley. It has also begun rolling out in Washington, DC, New Jersey, Dallas, Boston, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Las Vegas, Denver, Phoenix, San Diego, Orange County, Seattle, Baltimore, Detroit, Miami, and Minneapolis.
This list comes directly from Lyft. If your car isn’t on the list, it will not qualify for Lyft Lux.
Lyft Lux Black Vehicle Requirements (Models and Age)
The Lyft Lux Black vehicle requirements are incredibly strict. The vehicle must have a black exterior in excellent condition. In addition, it must a have a leather, or leather like interior. In general, Lyft Lux Black and Black XL require a new luxury vehicle in absolutely pristine condition.
The reason the vehicle requirements are so strict is that Lyft Lux Black and Lyft Lux Black SUV fares are often 100% – 175% higher than regular Lyft or Lyft XL fares. Most users of Lyft Lux Black are usually high level executives, and people going out for a special occasion or a night on the town. If a rider is paying that much, they are expecting a great car and a professional experience.
This list comes directly from Lyft. If your car isn’t on the list, it will not qualify for Lyft Lux Black.
2018 Or Newer
Ford – Expedition
2017 Or Newer
Land Rover – Discovery
Lincoln – Continental
2014 Or Newer
Acura – MDX, RLX
Audi – A6, A7, A8, Q7, RS7, S6, S7, S8

Lyft Lux Black XL Vehicle Requirements (Models and Age)
If it qualifies for Lyft Lux Black and has seven seat belts, it qualifies for Lyft Lux Black XL
Lyft Vehicle Condition Requirements
All vehicles on the Lyft platform must have at least 4 doors and 5 seat belts. Cars with jump doors (many 4 door pickups) will not qualify for Lyft. All exterior lights must be working, including turn signals, brake lights, reverse lights, and headlights. Both high beams and low beams must work.
Besides the above requirements, the vehicle has to be in good condition, and good working order. So, all the doors, windows, and major equipment have to work, and the car shouldn’t have any major cosmetic damage.
How does Lyft define major cosmetic damage? Generally, if your car has a few scratches or minor dings, you should be approved. This is espeically true if you live in a state that doesn’t require an inspection. In those states, you will have to send Lyft pictures of your car from all sides. If the damage isn’t noticeable in the photo, it won’t be a problem. However, if you have noticeable damage like a big dent in the door, or part of your bumper is hanging off, you won’t be approved.
If you live in a state that requires an inspection, approval often comes down to the inspector. They usually don’t car about minor dings. But if your windshield had a crack (even a small one), you probably won’t pass.
While not all states require a vehicle inspection to drive with Lyft, it’s important that your car is in pretty good condition anyway. The reason is that vehicle condition can often affect ratings and tips. If your vehicle has squeaky breaks, worn out seats, or suspension issues, riders will notice.
The Lyft Vehicle Inspection
In many states and cities, you’ll need to pass a vehicle inspection to drive with Lyft. See your state information above to see if you’ll need to get an inspection, and to download the Lyft inspection form for your market. You generally must use the Lyft inspection form, not a generic inspection form, or the Uber vehicle inspection form.
The vehicle inspection is a one page form you’ll give to a licensed mechanic in your state. They’ll fill it out, and if you pass, you’ll upload the completed form to your Lyft dashboard. The inspection usually costs about $20 and you can have it done at Jiffy Lube, Pep Boys, or another licensed mechanic. In some markets, you can have the inspection completed at a Lyft hub, sometimes for free.
What gets checked during the Lyft vehicle inspection?
Here’s a list of what the inspector will look at during the inspection.
The basic Lyft driver requirements are as follows.
You have to be 21 years old and have had a driver’s license for at least 1 year. (In some cities, your license may need to be from the state in which you’ll be driving).
You must be able to pass a criminal background check and driving background check.
You must have in state personal auto insurance (you must be listed as a driver on the policy) for the vehicle you will be using.
You must have a relatively clean driving record. (No DUI’s or reckless driving and very few moving violations over the last few years.)

Lyft Driver Promo Code – Current Lyft Promotions 2019
[toc]
Lyft has exploded in popularity over the past year, adding millions of new passengers and grabbing 40% of the U.S. rideshare market.
Currently, Lyft has over 20 million active riders. However, this means Lyft desperately needs drivers. Use our Lyft driver promo code when you sign up, and you will get a $1000 Lyft driver bonus earnings guarantee.
This Lyft promo ensures you’re guaranteed to earn $1000, if you complete 125 rides in your first 30 days.
Our promo code works in all Lyft markets in the U.S. and Canada.
Sign up to drive with Lyft today using the link below to receive your $1000 earnings guarantee.
In all cities, Lyft has moved away from cash sign up bonuses and towards earnings guarantees.
Current Lyft driver guarantee amounts range from a few hundred dollars up to $2100. However, the $2100 Lyft bonus guarantee is only available in a few cities (San Francisco), and requires completing over 200 rides.
The below image is of an older $3500 Lyft driver guarantee that is no longer in effect, but illustrates how the bonus works. Basically, Lyft guarantees you’ll make $3500 (gross pay, before Lyft takes their cut) if you do a certain number of rides in your first four weeks. If you do that, but don’t make $3500, Lyft will pay you the difference.
As you can see, the above guarantee required a new Lyft driver to give a lot of rides. This is why we only suggest manually entering a driver referral code if you plan on driving with Lyft full time.
How To Use A Lyft Driver Promo Code
Using a Lyft driver promo code is pretty simple. Just click the button below to start your application with a Lyft promo code.
Or, you can visit the Lyft Website, and follow the steps below to enter a Lyft driver code manually.
1. Enter your cell phone number on the first screen. Then, click “Apply To Drive”.
2. Enter your name, email, driving city, and the code – TAKINGLYFT
Pretty easy either way, right? That’s all you have to do to start your application, and lock in your bonus amount.
The Lyft Application – Next Steps And Required Documents
To finish your Lyft application you’ll need to complete the following steps:
3. Choose to use your own vehicle or rent a vehicle through Lyft.
4. Fill in your driver information.
5. Give consent to Lyft to run a background check.
6. Upload your insurance, license, and other required info.
Document requirements vary by market. Usually, you need your registration, license, and proof of insurance. But check your specific market requirements here.
After that, you just have to wait for approval.
Basic Lyft Driver Requirements
The Lyft driver requirements are as follows:
You must be at least 21 years old.
You must have had a license for at least one year.
You must be able to pass a background check.
You must have a relatively clean driving record.
If you don’t meet all the requirements above, you may still qualify to drive for Doordash.
Basic Lyft Vehicle Requirements
In most markets, a 2004 or newer model year car will qualify for Lyft. The car must have 4 doors and at least 5 seatbelts.
In certain markets, you’ll need a newer vehicle. Also, if you want to drive Lyft Lux, you’ll need a 2012 or newer qualifying vehicle.
As long as you use a Lyft driver promo code, or use our link when you sign up, you’ll get a Lyft earnings guarantee. However, you must be sure to enter a code when you begin your application.
To be clear, Lyft no longer offers cash bonuses for new drivers, only earnings guarantees.
The cash Lyft sign up bonus, when it did exist, was per ride. Here’s how it worked.
Say you signed up with Lyft in Los Angeles and you got a $800 sign up bonus, for giving 400 rides in your first 60 days.
So, you received a bonus of $2 on each ride you give.
Because the bonus is per ride, if you gave 200 rides in 60 days, you would still get a $400 sign up bonus, on top of your driver earnings.
Even better, you got paid part of your bonus each week. You didn’t have to wait 60 days to get the bonus!
If you gave 40 rides in your first week, you’d get an $80 bonus. That’s was on top of your regular Lyft driver earnings. Unfortunately, those days are gone, and Lyft will currently only guarantee that you will earn a certain amount.
How Much Will My Lyft Bonus Be?
It depends where you are located. Your Lyft sign up bonus is determined by where you’ll be driving.
The highest Lyft driver sign up bonus is currently $0 and the highest Lyft earnings guarantee is $2100. Sign up bonuses are no longer available. In all cities, Lyft has switched to a sign up earnings guarantee.
Beware Of The Fake Lyft Driver Referral Code
There are a number of sites out there promising $4000, or even $5000, cash sign up bonuses. Unfortunately, there’s no such thing.
So, if you see sites promising giant bonuses like that, you can be sure they are fake, or that you won’t get the promised amount.
Has The Lyft Driver Bonus Changed Over The Years?
Yes, when Lyft first started and until about 2017, it used to be a lump sum bonus instead of per ride. It worked like this.
A new Lyft driver would be required to complete a certain number of rides. After the driver completed the rides, they would receive their Lyft bonus. Then, Lyft changed the bonus and the driver received their Lyft bonus a little bit at a time, as they completed each ride, not after completing all the rides.
Once upon a time, there actually was a $5000 Lyft sign up bonus. It was in Los Angeles. The ride requirements were insane, something like 2000 rides in three months.
But, if you were able to complete all the rides, you would get a $5000 bonus, on top of your regular Lyft earnings.
At the beginning of 2019, Lyft completely stopped all bonuses that paid additional cash on top of driver earnings.
How Much Can I Make Driving With Lyft?
It depends. Earnings vary a lot between Lyft markets. However, Lyft drivers in cities with more than 500,000 people tend to earn more. Drivers who have a car that qualifies for Lyft Lux or Lyft XL can earn the most.
However, a driver in a smaller market like Oklahoma City is unlikely to earn as much as a driver in San Francisco, Boston, or Chicago.
When you first start to drive with Lyft, a realistic expectation is around $15 per hour. As you drive more and gain experience, your earnings should go up.
Pretty much every Lyft driver earns more in their second and third weeks driving, than in their first.
Lyft Bonuses And Streaks
If you drive with Lyft, you can also increase your earnings through various bonuses and incentives.
It’s actually pretty routine most of the time. You pick people up, take them where they are going, and you get paid.
You meet some interesting folks and have some good conversations. Also, you learn your way around very well.
You also wind up becoming a better driver. After all, you’re driving more, and practice makes perfect.
Use Your Lyft Driver Referral Code To Earn More
Once you’re approved, you’ll receive your own Lyft driver referral code. Think of this as your own Lyft driver promo code.
You can give your Lyft driver referral code to friends or family. You can also post your code on your social media accounts. Some drivers even have Lyft promo code business cards made.
You can refer new riders and drivers. When they sign up, they can get free Lyft rides or a Lyft driver bonus. And as the referrer, you could get a Lyft driver referral bonus.
The Lyft Driver Promo: Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use two Lyft driver promo codes?
Nope, you can only use one code. Also, you can give no more than one ride to the same person for the bonus requirements.

Nationally, Lyft drivers earn about $2 more per hour than Uber drivers. But earnings vary from market to market.
Can you drive Lyft with a friend or family member in the car?
No, you will definitely be deactivated.
How long does it take to get approved by Lyft?
It can take from one day to several weeks. Most people are approved to Drive With Lyft in 5-10 days.

Best Times to Drive Lyft & Uber in Dallas
If you want to maximize your earnings and get the most out of your experience driving for Lyft or Uber, you’ll want to try to drive during the busiest times of the day. The best times to drive Lyft and Uber in Dallas are very similar to other major metropolitan areas:
Weekday Morning Rush Hour: From 6:30 a.m. to 9 a.m., many people in Dallas are heading to work from the outlying suburbs. Some Dallas commuters prefer to take an Uber or Lyft to avoid high parking fees, especially in the downtown area.
Weekday Afternoon Rush Hour: Commuters are heading home from work between 4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Again, many people want to avoid the stress of driving in Dallas traffic and the parking fees that come along with working downtown.
Busiest Weekend Hours: Typically, the best time to drive during the weekend (Friday and Saturday) is from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m. Most people head to bars and restaurants between 8 and 10 p.m. and return home between 1 and 3 a.m.
Lyft & Uber Airport Pickups & Drop-offs: What You Need to Know
With almost 900 daily flights, the Dallas Fort Worth Airport is the third busiest airport in the world.
Dallas also has Love Field Airport, which is located northwest of downtown and frequently used by those who fly into Dallas often. With these two prominent airports located in the Dallas city limits, there’s a good chance you’ll be dropping off and picking up riders there often.
Dallas Fort Worth Airport (DFW)
The DFW Airport requires that rideshare drivers display an airport vehicle decal when picking up and dropping off passengers.
You can get this free airport decal from the Ground Transportation Office at DFW (2444 East 30th St.). When applying for the decal, choose “Pre-Arranged” for the DFW Decal Type and Operating Authority Type.
Both Lyft and Uber drivers can drop off riders at the departures area of the terminal. For pick-ups, both rideshare apps work on a first-in, first-out basis, meaning those who arrive at the staging lot first will be the first to receive ride requests.
Both the Uber and Lyft staging lots are located at Terminal A. This is where you will wait for a ride request. Once you receive a ride request, you’ll proceed to the correct terminal.
Uber has two special features important to know about when picking up and dropping off riders at DFW:
Pre-Match — Pre-Match prompts drivers in the staging lot to head toward the airport terminal a few minutes before they get a ride request to help minimize idle time.
Rematch — The Rematch feature helps drivers who have just dropped off a rider at the airport quickly get a pick-up request without waiting in the airport queue.
Dallas Love Field Airport (DAL)
As with DFW, riders who are heading to the Dallas Love Field Airport can be dropped off at the departures area of the airport.
If drivers want to be eligible to pick up another rider at the airport, they will need to keep the Lyft or Uber app open and proceed to the DAL staging area, which is located at the Ground Transportation area near the airport entrance. You can wait in any of the areas on Ansley, Hawes, or Aubrey Avenues.
Pickups at the DAL airport are also on a first-in, first-out basis. Drivers who are first in the queue once in the staging area will be the first to receive ride requests. If there are no drivers in the staging lot, then the pick-up requests will go to other drivers in the area.
Dallas Lyft & Uber Driving Tips and Shortcuts
Getting the most of your rideshare driving experience means knowing how to navigate the Dallas area. Most ride requests come in during the busiest traffic times of the day, so it’s important to know your route ahead of time and check traffic before you leave. Not only will you be able to work more efficiently and pick up more riders, but your riders will appreciate your ability to get them to their destinations promptly.
Here are just a few driving tips and shortcuts for Dallas drivers:
Avoid gridlock on the Central Expressway and Dallas North Tollway by taking Preston Road.
When traveling northeast from downtown, take Live Oak rather than Gaston or Ross, as it has more lanes and generally less traffic.
When I-30 is backed up to downtown, take Elm Street if going west or Commerce Street if going east through the canyons and Deep Ellum.
If you’re traveling from East Dallas to Oak Cliff, avoid I-30 by taking Columbia Avenue, which will eventually get you to South Houston Street and the North Zang Boulevard Bridge.
When trying to get north from Oak Cliff, you can take the Houston/Jefferson viaducts to downtown or Sylvan to I-30 when 35E and the Mixmaster are congested.
To get to DFW quicker, take the Northwest Highway heading west until it ends.
Any Lyft or Uber driver can use the tips above to get the most out of their experience by minimizing idle time and maximizing earnings.
The more efficiently you work and more riders you pick up during a shift, the more money you stand to make. And remember, you can work for both Lyft and Uber. In fact, most Dallas rideshare drivers check both apps to take advantage of higher rider demand and fares throughout the week.
Want to become a Lyft driver? Then you’ll need to complete the Lyft application. While it’s a fairly quick and simple process, there are a variety of issues that can arise if you make a mistake or aren’t prepared to meet the company’s requirements. Fortunately, the key to completing the Lyft driver application successfully is knowing what to expect. From driver qualifications to the steps involved, here’s your complete step-by-step guide to the Lyft application.
What You Need to Know About the Lyft Application
Simply wanting to become a Lyft driver isn’t enough to make your dream a reality; you’ll also need to match their list of requirements. First, you’ll need to meet Lyft’s fleet standards. Then, you’ll also need to match any state or local municipality requirements. It’s important that you review these criteria ahead of time to make sure that you don’t end up wasting time on the hiring process if you don’t qualify. Before you dive into the Lyft driver application, take a closer look at the rideshare company’s driver and vehicle standards, below.
Lyft Driver Requirement
Determining your eligibility for the Lyft fleet begins with you. Here’s a quick breakdown of Lyft’s driver requirements:
Age: All Lyft drivers must be 21 years old or older at the time of their application. Younger drivers may want to consider other options, like Caviar or Doordash, that offer a lower age restriction.
License: During the Lyft driver application process, the company will use your driver’s license number to verify your driving record. To qualify for their fleet, your license needs to have stayed up-to-date and current over the last year. Any expirations or suspensions during this time period will prevent your application from being approved.
Driving History: An excellent driving record is another must-have to join the Lyft fleet. Any drug- or alcohol-related incidents within the last seven years automatically disqualifies applicants. You also can’t have more than three traffic tickets over the past three years.
Criminal Record: The rideshare company also runs a criminal background check on all potential drivers. The presence of violent crime will eliminate you from the Lyft application process.
Remember: There may be requirement fluctuations based on the location where you plan to drive. It’s best to check state- and city-specific regulations before you begin the Lyft application process.
Lyft Vehicle Requirements
In addition to qualifying as a driver, you’ll also need to meet Lyft’s vehicle requirements. Whether you plan to use your vehicle or the vehicle of a family member, it needs to meet these standards:
Insurance: All Lyft vehicles must have adequate insurance coverage. The specifics of the policy need to match your state’s minimum coverage requirements. However, some insurance providers won’t extend the vehicle’s policy protections when it’s also used for business. As a result, it’s recommended that drivers look into rideshare insurance to ensure they’re fully protected in the event of an accident.
Registration: Your vehicle’s registration also needs to be up-to-date. If it’s close to expiring, you may want to go ahead and renew the plates before you begin your Lyft application. This precautionary step will ensure you don’t run into any issues.
Age: Vehicle age is one of the biggest location-specific variables of this process. In most territories, cars and SUVs under 15 years old will qualify. However, Lyft allows their drivers to rent a vehicle through their Lyft Express Drive program. If you don’t have a vehicle or yours doesn’t meet the minimum requirements, you can sign up to rent one during the Lyft application process.
Seating & Doors: All Lyft vehicles must offer at least five seats with functioning seatbelts. More seat availability can qualify you for the higher-earning vehicle types, like Lyft XL, because you’ll fit more passengers. Your car or SUV also needs to offer four doors to ensure convenience and safety to riders.
Some cities also set their own requirements. For instance, the Lyft application for prospective drivers in Portland, OR, requires that vehicles be 10 years old or newer. The rest of Oregon, on the other hand, follows the standard 15-year rule with the exception of Medford, which accepts vehicles that are 16 years old or newer. You can find the specific criteria for your area directly on Lyft’s website.
Currently, Lyft offers five different ride types. Achieving the standard requirements will allow you to Drive With Lyft or Lyft XL, depending on your vehicle’s seating availability. However, some cars and SUVs may also qualify to drive for the rideshare company’s more elite programs, which offer higher earning potential. The various ride styles include:
Lyft
Lyft XL
Lyft Lux
Lyft Lux Black
Lyft Lux Black XL
The Lyft Lux options require higher standards to provide a more luxurious experience for riders. In fact, for all Lyft Lux vehicles, the age requirement is restricted to 2011 models and newer. During the Lyft application process, the company will determine which ride-type qualifications your circumstances match.
How to Complete the Lyft Driver Application
Once you’re sure Lyft is the right rideshare company for you, you’re ready to apply. You can complete the Lyft driver application with a few easy steps, which will take you around 20 to 30 minutes. Here’s a quick walkthrough so that you know what to expect:
1. Create Your Lyft Driver Account
The first step in the Lyft application process is creating your driver account. After accessing the application page, you’ll enter your phone number. The rideshare company uses this step to verify that you have a reliable smartphone.
Next, the system will prompt you to enter the rest of the information required to create your account, including name, email, and city. This is also the screen where you’ll input a promo code. To help you reach your earning goals, use our Lyft driver referral code—MOVER. When all the boxes are filled in, hit “Next.”
2. Choose Your Preferred Driving Option
After creating your account, you’ll need to make a vehicle selection. If you want to rent a vehicle, pick the “Rent With Express Drive” option. To drive your own, then simply click “Add Personal Vehicle.”
3. Provide Vehicle Information
Next, you’ll provide more information regarding your vehicle, including year, make, and model. The vetting process also requires that you select the number of doors and seatbelts available.
4. Complete Personal Information
Following the vehicle information, the Lyft application requires that you enter more specific personal data. Here, you’ll enter your legal identifiers, like name, social security information, and date of birth. You’ll also be required to provide your driver’s license information.
5. Consent to a Background Check
Next, you’ll need to give consent for a background check. This process will use the information provided on the previous page to pull your driving and criminal records. After reading the disclosure, you’ll click “Authorize” if you agree.
6. Schedule Your Vehicle Inspection
Most Lyft markets require a vehicle inspection to verify the driver’s eligibility. If it’s included in your location’s criteria, the Lyft application will allow you to select a day and time for your inspection appointment. Alternatively, you can use a mobile inspection company like Rideshare Mechanic. They perform the Lyft vehicle inspection over video chat, so you don’t even have to go anywhere.
7. Provide Documentation
After setting up your auto inspection, the Lyft driver application will ask you to upload any required documents. You can expect the criteria to differ by location, but it typically involves a copy of your driver’s license, a photograph of your license plates, and proof of insurance. The system will tell you exactly what you need to upload before completing your application.
Ace Your Lyft Application and Earn More
Now that you know what to expect from the Lyft driver application, it’s time to ace your application and hit the road. While your long-term earning potential is virtually endless as a driver, you can boost your short-term income by using a Lyft driver promo code. If you enter a Lyft driver promo code when you start your application, you could be eligible for a sign up bonus of up to $1,000. Click the link in the box below to get more information about your Lyft sign up bonus, now available in all U.S. and Canadian markets.

Deciding to become a rideshare driver is only half of the battle. Next, you need to determine which company you want to drive for. One of the most popular brands is Lyft. As Uber’s top competitor, the company has expanded rapidly, adding millions of new riders.
Fortunately for you, this means they’re in constant need of drivers, which means it’s a great time to become a Lyft driver
Unless you’ve driven for other rideshare companies in the past, you’re probably wondering how to become a Lyft driver. While the Lyft application process is pretty straightforward, there are a few factors you need to consider before and after applying. If you’re ready to join Lyft, this guide will explain everything you need to know.
How to Know if Lyft Is the Right Match for You
Not everyone is cut out to be a Lyft driver. To ensure you don’t waste your time pursuing a career that you’ll end up hating, it’s important that you do your research. Before you take the next steps in the Lyft driver application process, take a closer look at what the job entails.
What Do Lyft Drivers Do?
Lyft drivers are the force behind the company’s rideshare services. As a driver, you’ll accept ride requests from Lyft passengers, pick them up, and then deliver them to their destination. For each journey, you’ll earn a specific rate.
Lyft Sign Up Bonus
Lyft is currently offering a $1000 earnings guarantee for new drivers nationwide. To sign up and get at least $1000 in guaranteed earnings in your first month, sign up using the button below.

While there isn’t a set-in-stone test that you can take to determine if being a Lyft driver is right for you, there is a correlation between certain personality traits and success in the industry. The top drivers are equipped with these qualities:
Excellent Customer Service Skills: A commitment to the satisfaction of passengers is a vital trait for Lyft drivers. Ratings play a factor in your success with the company, and if you’re invested in giving your passengers a positive experience, you’re more likely to achieve consistent 5-star ratings.
Well-Organized: As a freelance worker, you’re responsible for paying your own income taxes and setting your wage goals. To ensure you’re setting yourself up for success, you need to keep track of your payouts as well as potential tax deductions, such as mileage and vehicle maintenance. For these tasks, you need to be incredibly organized and keep accurate records on a regular basis. To help in this area, many drivers download a mileage tracker.
Friendly Demeanor: Friendliness is another important quality of being a Lyft driver. Even when riders don’t want to have a conversation on their journey, a simple greeting at the beginning and the end of the ride will ensure they enjoy their time in your vehicle.
Comfort Behind the Wheel: You also need to be comfortable driving for hours on end. Full-time Lyft drivers are likely to spend eight to ten hours in the driver’s seat every day, while part-time drivers are likely to hit at least 10 hours a week. If you’re uncomfortable driving or can’t sit for long periods of time, then becoming a Lyft driver may not be the best choice for you.
Ability to Multitask: As a Lyft driver, you’ll also need to multitask. While you’re working, you’ll need to navigate to your destination based on the directions given in the app, carefully watch the road, and communicate with your rider all at once. Being able to accomplish all three tasks at the same time is an absolute necessity for rideshare drivers.
Self-Motivated: As an independent contractor, you also need to be self-motivated. Since you don’t have a boss or schedule to follow, you’re the only one responsible for your financial survival. This means that you should have the motivation to not only work hard, but push yourself to meet your goals.
While you don’t necessarily need to encompass all of these traits, they can be used as an identifier of your future success as a driver. If you possess these qualities, it increases the likelihood that you’ll not only enjoy your job, but that you’ll also be good at it.
Becoming A Lyft Driver: Earnings of Lyft Drivers
Lyft calculates each driver’s earnings using a three-part process. The pricing equation is composed of a base fare, a per-mile fee, and a per-minute earning. Each of these rates is location-specific, so what a Lyft driver earns in Seattle is vastly different than what one would earn in St. Louis or Los Angeles.
When there’s a high number of Lyft ride requests, the company activates a service known as “Prime Time.” During this period, drivers receive an increased rate for each ride they accept in the area. The system is designed so that the standard fare is multiplied by a particular percentage, which is determined by the level of rider demand. The current prime rate will be displayed on the app at the time of ride acceptance.
On top of Prime Time increases, Lyft offers a reward program for highly motivated drivers. The Power Driver Bonus sets weekly requirements, such as a minimum number of rides and a high acceptance rate, and each week that you meet the criteria, you get a bonus. The system usually has three or four tiers, so you can actually earn up to an additional $50 – $400 per week. Lyft Power Driver Bonus amounts and requirements differ from city to city.
As a Lyft driver, every time you accept a ride request, there’s a chance that the passenger will cancel it. In this situation, you won’t completely lose the entire value of the potential fare. As long as it’s been at least two minutes since you accepted the trip, you’ll receive a cancellation fee.
Lyft drivers are paid on a weekly basis. The company applies payouts on Tuesday mornings. Depending on your bank provider, the money is deposited into your account instantly, within a few hours, or within a couple of days. With most banks, the money is in your account within 24 hours. Lyft also offers an instant pay option, Express Pay, which allows immediate access to your earnings.
Become A Lyft Driver: Lyft’s Driver Requirements
Having the desire to become a Lyft driver doesn’t ensure that you meet the company’s requirements. To qualify as a Lyft driver, you need to meet the following criteria:
Age: All Lyft drivers need to be at least 21 years old.
License: You also need to have had your driver’s license for at least a year before you apply to become a driver.
Good Driving History: You need a clean driving history. Your record can’t display any license suspensions within the last three years, and no serious drug- or alcohol-related charges within the last seven years. As far as speeding tickets, there need to be fewer than three violations on your record within the last three years.
Acceptable Criminal History: Lyft requires that drivers have a clean criminal history. This means that your background check needs to be free of all violent and sexual crimes.
Lyft also places restrictions on the vehicles that can be used for their rideshare services. These qualifications include:
Insurance: All vehicles must be fully insured to be approved, and you also need to be insured on the policy.
Registration: Your vehicle’s plates also need to be up-to-date.
Seating: Lyft’s minimum seating requirements are five (including the driver) and go up to eight available seats (seven passengers).
Doors: All vehicles need at least four doors to provide driver and passenger convenience.
Age: Unlike Uber, the age restrictions of Lyft-associated vehicles vary by location. During the application process, the system will automatically provide the eligibility requirements for your area.
Check out our page on Lyft vehicle requirements for more information and to see if your vehicle qualifies for Lyft XL (larger vehicles) or Lyft Lux (high end vehicles). If you don’t have a vehicle, you can still Drive With Lyft by renting a vehicle through Lyft Express Drive.
To pass Lyft’s application process, you need to meet the company’s minimum requirements as well as the rules set in place by your local municipality.
Lyft Driver Alternatives
The main alternative to Lyft is Uber. Fortunately, the Lyft vs. Uber battle is one that benefits drivers. Since drivers at both companies are independent contractors, they can technically drive for both services at the same time. This approach widens the available market in the area because you’ll have access to both Lyft and Uber riders. You could boost your earnings significantly with this approach.
If you don’t meet the Lyft requirements as a result of age or vehicle style, there are other alternatives. Uber’s eligibility criteria for rideshare drivers is similar, but it still makes sense to apply for that service if you don’t get accepted by Lyft
Also, delivery services, like Uber Eats, Doordash, and Postmates, have fewer driver and vehicle restrictions.
Become A Lyft Driver: Benefits
Choosing to join the Lyft fleet comes with multiple benefits. Some of the advantages of working with Lyft include:
Be Your Own Boss
The biggest appeal of rideshare companies, like Lyft, is that drivers operate as independent contractors. Being self-employed provides a significant amount of freedom regarding the schedule you work. As your own boss, you choose when and where you want to operate instead of relying on a manager to dictate your daily tasks.
Virtually Unlimited Earning Potential
One of the top reasons people decide to become a part- or full-time rideshare driver is the potential earnings. While true success won’t happen overnight, a quality driver will quickly learn the ropes and determine the most efficient operating times in their area. As a result, you’re provided with an opportunity to make a significant amount of money every week.
Company Perks
As a Lyft partner, you’ll get many perks in the form of entertainment and lifestyle discounts. Most impressively, the company provides their drivers with access to a variety of educational resources, like financial aid services. You can also get reduced rates on financial services and professional tax guidance, and the Lyft Driver’s Reward Program aids drivers with fuel costs and vehicle maintenance.
How to Be a Lyft Driver
If Lyft still sounds like the rideshare company for you, it’s time to take on the Lyft driver application. You can start your application with a Lyft promo code worth up to $1000 by clicking HERE. Then follow the instructions below to complete your Lyft application and get on the road.
1. Create Your Account
To create an account, you’ll enter your phone number.
2. Enter Your Information And Lyft Driver Promo Code
Then, enter your name, email, driving city and your promo code. Ours is MOVER if you’d like to use it. In order to be eligible for a Lyft sign up bonus of up to $1000, you must enter a code when you start your application. Lyft does not allow you to add a promo code later.
3. Choose: Drive Your Car Or Rent A Vehicle
The next step is to choose whether you want to Drive With Lyft using your own car, or rent a vehicle through Lyft Express Drive.
4. Provide Vehicle Information
If you’re going to be driving your own car, the Lyft application will prompt you to provide your vehicle’s details. This step includes the year, make, model, the number of doors, color, and number ofseatbelts. As long as the information provided meets their requirements, you’ll move onto the next step in the Lyft driver application process.
5. Enter Your Personal Information
Once the company knows you have a qualifying vehicle, they want to know more about you. For this step, you’ll need to provide all of your personal information, including your legal name, date of birth, driver’s license number, and social security number (so they can run a background check).
6. Background Check
Next up, you’ll need to authorize a local and national background check. The company provides a full disclosure so that you’ll know exactly how they’re using the information. If you hit “Acknowledge,” they’ll use the information from the previous step to access your DMV records and perform a complete background check.
7. Arrange a Vehicle Inspection
Unlike Uber, Lyft has you sign up for a vehicle inspection (if your market requires it) during the application process. This approach helps you save time because you can hit the road as soon as your application is approved. You are not required to go to to Lyft’s suggested inspection location. You can have your inspection performed by any licensed mechanic.
8. Upload Your Documents
The final step is to upload some documents. Document requirements vary by location, but you’ll at least need a copy of your driver’s license and insurance. Most markets also require you to upload a valid registration. See our Lyft vehicle requirements page for the specific document requirements for your market. After uploading your documents, you just have to wait for approval. This can take anywhere from one day to a few weeks. Most drivers are approved in five to ten days.
9. Hit the Road
Once you receive your approval email from Lyft, you can officially hit the road and make some money. They’ll provide you with full details on how to accept your first ride as well as how to navigate the app successfully.
How to Be a Lyft Driver – Ace Your Application
Tackling the Lyft application won’t take you very long, but there are ways to ensure that you put your best face forward. Here are a few tips to ace your Lyft application:
Be Prepared
You’ll need to provide the company with your personal information as well as documentation, so organize all of your paperwork ahead of time. This will reduce the time needed to apply as well as ensure that you have everything you need.
Be Honest
The company verifies all of the information you provide with a background check and vehicle inspections, so don’t try to cheat the system. Doing so will definitely earn your Lyft application a denial, and it could also inhibit your ability to work with the company in the future.
Act Quickly
The sooner you schedule your vehicle inspection, the faster you’ll be approved. Lyft utilizes the inspection process to ensure that your vehicle meets all of their requirements, including insurance. As a result, be sure to take proof of licensing, insurance, and registration to your appointment.
Reaching Your Full Earning Potential As a Lyft Driver

No matter where you’re browsing the internet these days, you’re bound to come across an advertisement luring new drivers to either Uber or Lyft – or both! These promising ads offer huge payouts depending on your market, and often seem like a low-risk, high-reward way to earn up to an extra thousand dollars just by driving around your neighborhood. While that’s not exactly wrong, there are some major roadblocks and fine print that make obtaining those rewards more challenging than what immediately meets the eye.
Before you run blindly toward the glittering payouts offered by both Uber and Lyft, make sure you read below to familiarize yourself with exactly what will be expected of you as a driver. After that, we’ll take a glimpse at the current promotions available for both rideshare companies.
Lyft & Uber Promotions: The Initial Sign-Up
The first thing worth mentioning about becoming a new driver is how the registration process works. When you create a new account with either Uber or Lyft, you will have the opportunity to enter a promotion code attached to the account. On Lyft, this is the one and only time you will get the chance to apply this code, meaning if you forget to do so during your registration, you will completely miss out on the offered promotion. Instead, you’ll begin as a standard new driver. You may be able to reach out to Lyft and see if they can retroactively apply the promotion, but in my experience, they have not been willing to do this usually. On Uber, you can sometimes add a code later, but it’s best to do it from the beginning.
I highly recommend exploring the internet for a little while before signing up for either rideshare company. Promotion codes can vary widely between markets, depending on how much demand there is for drivers, so check out your area and any nearby cities where you might be able to earn more bang for your buck. Holiday codes pop up from time to time, though they only work for a limited duration before they’re gone for good.
No matter what code you end up using, absolutely make sure you apply it to your account when you start your application.
Uber & Lyft Driver Promotions: The Sign Up Bonus Or Earnings Guarantee
Lyft and Uber approach driver sign ups differently.
The Lyft driver bonus is per a ride bonus. So, if you get a $500 Lyft driver promo for 180 rides, you get an extra $2.78 per ride. The total bonus amount fluctuates depending on the need for drivers in your area. Typically, the Lyft driver promos range anywhere from $50 all the way up to over $1000 at times. These simple sign-on bonuses are the most common promotion you’ll encounter with Lyft.
Uber currently offers guaranteed earnings for new drivers instead of a cash sign up bonus. Basically, Uber guarantees you’ll earn a certain amount if you complete a certain number of rides. If you don’t make at least that amount (gross earnings), Uber will pay you the difference. The Uber guarantees range from a few hundred dollars to $2000, and sometimes they offer more than one guarantee amount per market.
The number of rides you’ll have to complete can vary depending on your location, but typically fall somewhere in the range of fifty to five hundred rides within a thirty- to ninety-day period. Always check your specific bonus to see exactly what you’ll need to do to complete it.
Why It Doesn’t Always Pay To Choose The Highest Uber Sign Up Guarantee
A recent Uber sign up guarantee for Los Angeles offered guaranteed gross earnings of $600 if the driver completed 70 rides. Chicago recently had an Uber sign up guarantee of $1800 if the driver completed 200 trips. Most new Uber drivers would think the Chicago offer is better, but that’s not actually the case. Believe it or not, on Uber, the lower guarantee amount often makes more sense.
Here’s why. It generally takes around 100 rides or so to become a relatively competent and efficient Uber driver. If a driver signs up with a guarantee similar to the Los Angeles offer ($600), they are more likely to need that guarantee because there’s a higher chance they may not hit $600 after 65 rides. On the other hand, the vast majority of Uber drivers in either Chicago or Los angeles will be able to hit $1800 in gross earnings after 200 rides. The reason is that pretty much every Uber driver is better between rides 100 and 200, than between 0 and 100.
In other words, the higher Uber sign up guarantees of $1000 or $2000 usually require such a high number of rides, that you’re almost certain to surpass the guarantee amount by the time you finish the required rides. Essentially, this renders the really high Uber guarantee pointless. This happens less often on the smaller Uber guarantee amounts.
Something to keep in mind when shooting for your sign-on bonus is that you cannot trick the system by giving rides to one person over and over again. Duplicate rides will not count toward your goal, and could get you deactivated. Each ride must be to a unique individual in order to achieve your sign-on bonus.
Once you’ve hit your goal, your bonus or guarantee will be credited to your account and you’ll be able to choose whether or not you wish to continue as a regularly paid driver. To see the Uber or Lyft guarantee available in your city, click one of the buttons below.
Lyft and Uber Driver Promotions: Weekly Guarantees and Weekly Bonuses
Both Uber & Lyft drivers offer periodic weekly guarantees. The weekly guarantees are similar to the Uber sign up guarantees. Basically, if you do a certain number of rides, you’re guaranteed to earn a certain amount. These guarantees are not offered all the time or in every market, but can skyrocket to as high as one thousand dollars a week if your city has a huge demand for drivers.
Both companies also offer weekly bonuses for completing a certain number of rides. However, the weekly bonus structures differ a bit.
Uber Weekly Bonus
In most markets, Uber offers two weekly bonuses, one for rides given Monday through Thursday, and a second bonus for Friday through Sunday. Uber may offer a driver an extra $120 if they complete 40 rides between Monday and Thursday. In the same week, they may also offer a driver an extra $140 for completing 40 rides between Friday and Saturday. So, if an Uber driver gives 80 rides that week, they’ll earn a bonus of $260, on top of their regular earnings.
The Lyft weekly bonus is called the Power Driver Bonus, and usually has three or four tiers. Basically, you complete the number of required rides shown below and you’ll receive a bonus. Peak rides are rides during rush hour and busy weekend hours.
While the payoff can be gigantic, reaching the higher level Lyft Power Driver Bonuses can be incredibly strenuous to complete and require you to devote a full-time schedule to driving.
In general, to collect the highest bonus amounts on either Uber or Lyft, you’ll need to be online for approximately fifty hours or more every week, and maintain an acceptance rate of over ninety percent in order to be approved for the payout at the end of each week. (These numbers can and do vary based on your location, but generally don’t fall far from what we have written here.) If you plan to be a part time Lyft driver, you should still be able to reach one of the lower tier Power Driver Bonuses. If you drive part time on Uber, it’s usually possible to reach one of the two weekly bonuses, but not both.
Look Out For Fake Uber & Lyft Referral Codes
If you come across any advertisements promising upwards of three, four, or even five thousand dollars, they’re absolutely fake. Unfortunately, a lot of drivers have started making these false claims in an effort to profit on their own personal referral codes. They will post their code somewhere online with the promise of new drivers making incredible amounts of money, because they earn a small bonus for every new driver they personally refer to Uber or Lyft. This can lead to obvious frustration and disappointment in new drivers, who don’t end up making anywhere close to the promised payout of a few thousand dollars.
Never trust an advertisement that offers payouts that high. The highest sign up bonus currently offered by Lyft is $1000, and most Lyft cities have sign up bonuses that are in the $300 to $600 range. Uber does not offer sign up bonuses anymore, and hasn’t since early 2017. Uber only offers guaranteed earnings when signing up. So, if you see an ad or a post promising a sign up bonus for Uber, it’s a lie or really outdated. Likewise, if you see an offer for a Lyft sign up bonus of $4000, it’s fake.
Sign-On Codes for You
While earnings may vary based on your city, and we cannot guarantee any particular amount, we can extend our own promotion codes to help you earn some extra cash as a new driver!
If you are planning to sign up as an Uber driver, you can use our code of “i9tz1” to ensure your Uber guaranteed earnings.
If you are planning to sign up as a Lyft driver, you can use our code of “RIDESHARECENTRAL” to earn a sign-on bonus of up to $1000 (but more likely $300 – $600). Again, the Lyft bonus is not a lump sum bonus given after completing the required rides. Instead, it is a bonus as you go arrangement. Lyft will add a percentage of the bonus to each ride you complete while working toward your goal. For example, if you sign up with a $600 bonus for 200 completed rides, you’ll get an additional $3 added to each of the rides you complete. The nice thing about this? You can still get part of your bonus even if you don’t complete all of the rides you are expected to.
Once again, both Uber and Lyft change their promotion amounts on a regular basis. They can change almost weekly, so if you happen to catch your city offering a particularly good Lyft promotion (high per ride bonus amount), you should take advantage of that and sign up as quickly as possible! There have been fluctuations in the same week of nearly five hundred dollars, so always keep an eye on what promotions are currently running in your area, that way you don’t miss out on any golden opportunities. As for Uber, when you sign up doesn’t matter as much since they don’t offer sign up bonuses.
The Verdict on Bonuses
So long as you have some extra time, and you can confidently maintain a high acceptance rate as an Uber or Lyft driver, new driver bonuses and guarantees are a good way to earn some extra money. There is a lot of red tape surrounding weekly guarantees, and so it’s wise to exhibit some caution when approaching those specific promotions. Chances are, if you don’t have fifty hours or more to dedicate to driving, you won’t be able to meet the requirements for the highest bonuses, but you can hit the lower tier bonuses. So, while you may not earn an extra $200 – $400 in bonus money each week, as a part-time Uber or Lyft driver, a bonus of $50 to $150 per week should be possible.
Always research the requirements for your specific city, as bonus amounts and the amount of work you’ll have to put in toward obtaining them can fluctuate from one place to the next. Uber & Lyft are the new taxi. Both have become the faces of the booming rideshare industry, and with that claim to fame comes the tricky work of making a semi-freelance business work for everyone involved – up to and including the people who decide to work there on a sudden whim. I myself began driving for both Lyft and Uber a few years ago with that same sort of suddenness most new drivers begin with, and even now find myself feeling some commiseration for new drivers every time I use the service as a passenger. I can’t help but wonder if they won’t be one of the many new drivers to get past their promotional period and find themselves completely overwhelmed.
There’s a lot to love about driving for Uber or Lyft. There are a slew of promotions going on at all times of the year, promising everything from double and triple surge pay, to guaranteed weekly earnings. For certain folks who think they can make it big, and who have a good credit score, there are even some leasing options for cars if the one you currently own doesn’t quite check all the boxes on their vehicle standards list. The freedom of being able to work the hours you want on the days you prefer is enough to lure in most anybody, and that’s precisely what they seem to be counting on to draw in new drivers all throughout the year.
So, what’s the catch? When I first started driving, I had no idea the sort of hard work and challenges that went into being an Uber or Lyft driver. The app always seemed busy, and there were so many forums and support groups out there, I thought I’d have the skills to make it big in no time. Turns out, though – it’s a little more complicated than that. Whether it’s the small print on their promotional contracts or the reality of the learning curve involved with being a new driver, there was a lot of work needed to improve my performance and really make a name for myself as a skilled, reputable driver.
Below are a few pointers and facets of rideshare, which I think are the most important for new drivers to figure out during their initial step into the world of Uber and Lyft. With any luck, it’ll help keep you on the right track for success!
Be Careful of Fine Print
Experienced rideshare drivers have it all figured out – or so it appears. From the rider’s perspective, it looks like the easiest job in the world. You get picked up, dropped off, and your driver carries on to the next ride without any sort of apparent hassle. In actuality, there are a number of things that your driver is keeping track of at any given time; these become immediately obvious when you’re first starting out as a new Uber or Lyft driver. There are not only a million things to keep track of, but a million more that you’re expected to take care of in order to earn those famous bonuses.
It is crucial to monitor the fine print involved with being a driver. When I first began, I made the mistake of not quite reading the details as carefully as I should have. I was promised a thousand dollars a week (yes, a week!) for the first four weeks – just for signing up with a simple promotional code. What I easily overlooked? The tiny writing beneath, which spelled out the requirements I needed to fulfill every single week in order to actually make that sort of money. What once seemed easy became a strenuous grind of meeting the ‘as long as you spend fifty hours online and complete fifty rides, per week’ rule that dictated if I’d be making that thousand dollars come payday.
Since I already worked a part-time shift at another job, it seemed next to impossible to add fifty hours of driving into my schedule. Plus, not only was I faced with the daunting task of finding more hours in the day, I quickly learned the nightmarish truth that unless I was working those hours during primetime, there was little chance of magically capturing fifty rides in a week. It was two to three times harder finding rides in the middle of a weekday than it was on the weekend, and what started as a promising extra paycheck quickly became a huge stress.
Another thing worth noting in promotional details is that this cash, at least during the time I was driving, is subject to taxes. The promise of one thousand dollars shrank to eight hundred dollars, which was a big enough difference to threaten the budget I’d made while expecting another two hundred padding my bank account. Thankfully, tips aren’t subject to taxes, but neither are they guaranteed.
In addition to long nights and crazy hours spent hounding rides, you’ll also be expected to keep your ratings above a 4.6. This shouldn’t be too hard so long as you are a courteous and reliable driver, but never underestimate the power of one cranky passenger with a trigger finger for low ratings. Uber is especially unforgiving, averaging your rate from your past five hundred rides, while Lyft is generous enough to only hold you accountable for your past one hundred rides. Either way, one bad set of stars can gravely affect your overall driver rating, and that alone could be enough to deny you any sort of bonus or the promotion you’re expecting. Worse yet, low ratings can quickly lead to your permanent deactivation as a driver – and low, again, is anything less than a still surprisingly high 4.6.
If you don’t spare the time to read the large and small text of any promotion you’re about tackle, there’s a chance you could set yourself up for failure from the beginning. Make sure you have the time to commit to a promotional period if that’s what you end up going for, otherwise it might prove less stressful to find a different bonus, like the ‘one lump sum’ sign-on bonus.
Ratings are absolutely critical to your success as a rideshare driver, no matter if you’re working for Uber or Lyft. Ratings alone can determine whether or not you even keep your job as a driver for very long; they’re that important. If you’ve ever used a ridesharing app like Lyft or Uber, you’ll recall that at the end of your ride, you have the option to rate your driver and even offer advice on how they could provide you with better service next time. What you may not have known is: if you, as a driver, fall below a four-star average, you get a written warning about your continued employment with the company within minutes of falling below that average. If your rating stays below the mandatory score for a certain period of time, they will terminate you with little more than an e-mail explaining your deactivation as a driver from that point forward.
There are a few ways you can leverage a rating to your favor. As a whole, the consensus on forums and support groups alike is that service with a smile gets you everywhere. Be attentive to your passenger and their individual needs. Consider keeping snacks, tissues, or water bottles in your car to offer as a courtesy to your riders. Pay attention to your passenger and how things may be changing throughout the course of the ride. I once turned around what I thought would be a poor rating from an ornery rider, just by recognizing how short they were becoming in conversation and asking how their day had been. By allowing them to vent to me on the trip to their destination, they changed from being angry (and possibly taking out their agitation out on me) to thanking me, tipping me, and giving me a five-star rating while commending my interpersonal skills as a driver. Recognize those social cues in your passenger, and neither you nor your rating will regret it.
Beyond this, remember that it goes both ways; ultimately, the companies look at everyone who was involved in the rating if things get that bad. Riders, too, have ratings of their own, and even though these ratings won’t prevent their obtaining rides via Uber’s discretion, it does get displayed next to their nameplate when a driver goes to accept their request for a lift. You do have the option to decline them. Don’t be afraid to decline a particularly low-rated rider, especially if your promotional pay depends on keeping a higher average for yourself. (But do make sure you don’t decline too many rides, or you may end up on the chopping block for that too.)
Acceptance Rates
Let’s delve into that a bit more. Acceptance rates are actually a key part of being an Uber or Lyft driver, and you’ll need to keep track of where your personal average is, so you don’t accidentally receive disciplinary action for declining too many rides.
Your acceptance rate with either Lyft or Uber, as a driver, is a percentage that reflects your tendency to accept or deny rides. This rate has to remain over ninety percent at the end of the work-week. If it does not, you might not get your promotional pay and you may find yourself with a warning e-mail in your inbox. This can get a little tricky, because your acceptance rate is based on your weekly average – rather than your overall average – and that can make it a pretty scary thing to keep track of, especially when you’re just starting out and might be uncertain about which rides to take and which to avoid. Remember that at the beginning of your week, those numbers might look a lot scarier than they actually are. Commonly, the numbers will even back out by the end of the pay period, so long as you don’t have several consecutive days of declining passengers. (This is especially important when working toward promotional earnings, which rely heavily on your ratings and the number of rides you’re completing!)
Over time, you’ll build up the experience to know which rides are appropriate to decline, but overall, drivers tend to avoid any passenger with a rating below 4.5. That saves drivers from potentially dealing with troublesome riders that could end up threatening their driver rating, but it does eat into your acceptance rating every time. It’s a stressful dance of maintaining two apparently opposing ratings, but eventually, you should get the hang of how the two work together.
The Lure of Surges and Primetime
When you’re tempted by the lure of surges and primetime, here’s the long and short of it: don’t. As a new, promotion-seeking driver, you need to be especially careful about wasted time. If you need to stay online for fifty hours, and you waste three or four a day chasing unreliable surge zones, you’re going to end up as disappointed as I was. Typically these zones will disappear long before you reach them, potentially leading you well out of your way for absolutely no benefit at all. Remember that every single driver in your area can see these zones, and the majority of them are going to flock to that location, so if you’re more than five minutes away from a sudden surge or hot zone, you’re better off ignoring it.
This is a pretty solid piece of advice – which I didn’t listen to until I’d already made that mistake a number of times myself. If you happen to be in the middle of a surge-area when it starts or prime-time is right where you are, take advantage, but don’t chase it! On the contrary, hold out to be one of the few who stays put. You might actually find yourself with an abundance of rides given up by those who decided to get out of range to chase the surge somewhere else.
